This is stupid, but it has nothing to do with this guy being a marine. Nothing at all.

The real question here is, are Farkers really as stupid as their posts make them appear?

I never said anything about jailbait. I was wondering what the hell a 21 year old is doing dating a HS kid.

queezyweezel 2008-04-26 08:57:18 PM
So, the school refunded the cost of the tickets and even agreed to pay her back for her prom dress. What's the problem here smitty?

You obviously haven't been around HS kids lately. BIG difference in the maturity level of 17 year old and a 21 year old.

Thats a huge generalization. I've met plenty of 18 year olds that could run their own business, and plenty of 21 year olds that wouldn't be fit to guard an outhouse.

if you let a 21 year-old in the prom, you can be almost guaranteed there'll be underage drinking going on there.

Took My 14 year old gf to the prom.
Went to hers 3 years later in my dress blues.

The district has refunded the cost of Pope's tickets and says it will reimburse her for her dress.

Freeper submitter is hoping that you all don't read the full 4 paragraph article to see that there is nothing to be outraged over.

School has a rule, the marine is cool with it, and school district is bending over backwards to satify the marine.

Grrr 2008-04-26 10:15:24 PM
There had to be some maximum age...

Why did the school refund money, though? Were they not quick enough about informing the HS senior of their 20-and-under rule?
It wasn't a new rule, was it??

More info. is needed to snark properly.

I can understand their concern about the kids having an even easier time of drinking themselves silly. I find it much sillier that people are like "21 dating 18? Ewww." What the hell are you, 5? Get over it. They're both of legal age, and it's just a 3 year difference. Jeez.

I dated a guy who was too old to go to my prom.

...That said, my daughter will be attending a private Catholic academy in Switzerland where there isn't a word for 'prom.'

I Said [TotalFark] 2008-04-26 11:52:32 PM
The school really should just let the guy go. I mean, christ almighty, he's 21, she's 18. Now they get bad press and will prob get shiat on a lot for an easily avoidable situation.

That's true - it has to do with irrational fears and arrogant presumption. But that's why we overpay our school adminstrators. If they weren't out there making stupid, short sighted, asinine decisions who would do it for us?

Bathia_Mapes [TotalFark] 2008-04-27 12:30:40 AM
I don't see how this has anything to do with the girl's date being a Marine. The school is prohibiting him from attending because he's 21 & can legally buy alcohol. Likely the school has this rule in effect to keep the dance as alcohol free as possible.

That being said, this is a non-story. The school is issuing a refund for the dance tickets & they're reimbursing the girl for the dress she bought.

Agreed. I'm starting to get into a relationship with someone who is 18 going on 19 and much more mature than I was at that age. I'm 24 myself. IIRC my grandma and grandpa were 7 years apart in age.

This isn't that uncommon. People just don't advertise how far apart in age they are from their spouse.

This ... There is a huge difference between being 18 and in HS and 18 and in College ... at least physiologically ... when I was 21 HS was off limits even if she was 18 ... (Freshman in College was a different story :-)

Agreed. There are certainly exceptions to the rule but most HSers suffer from the HS mentality, i.e. they are retarded. Just think, if you're 20 something or older now, would you have dated you 18 year old self?

So I'm guessing that everyone going off on the submitter are zero tolerance freaks?

Probably the same people that say yep, that nail file on the fingernail clipper looks awfully dangerous and it technically is a blade so that's five days out of school suspension. Oh you were late because you over slept working the close shift at McD's for the third time this week to help the family out? I'm sorry, its still a detention - sorry, but that will make you late for work and they'll fire you, but rules are rules.

The point is, there is a rule - but shouldn't a marine flying back for prom be a cause for an admin to make an exception?

/yep been in a district that did those things.

Jose628 2008-04-27 02:05:29 AM
Are you people retards?

The guy being a marine is the tip of the ironic cake we have here.

That specifi noum (marine) is there to emphasize the fact that, at this guy's age, you can go and kill random people (or be killed by them) in a godforsaken desert 1,000,000 miles away from your home and yet you're not grown-up enough to drink that dangerous and filthy drug, the alcohol.

Get it now? No one is spitting at your beloved soldiers and their priceless contribution to yada yada yada

/Not submitter

How long were they dating though? Depending on birth dates, that could be a 2 school year difference. If they started dating when he was a senior and she was a sophomore, and now it's two years later, is it that big of deal?

Would you stop a senior/freshman couple? Are there rules against that at the school? There is a MUCH larger difference between seniors and freshman compared to a 18 year old and a 21 year old.

While I see your argument ... I guess I never really experienced that when I was their age ... in a sense of having myself / or friends that were in a similar situation.

I'm still not doubting that they could have been dating for a while but from what it seems it looks like the school had no relation with the guy.

When I was in high school I dated a girl from another school ... it was an all girl school ... but they still knew who I was during prom / spring fling / and all the other dances they had.

/Still sticking with the school in this one
