Wow there is some real stupid there. And this guy is supposed to be a doctor?

i bet if he was on a cocktail of pain medications like vicodin or oxycontin he would've been approved.

/my mom loves to biatch about pot smokers even though she's on valium and countless of other prescription tranquilizers. it kills me.

So to discourage people from inhaling a plant that supposedly causes them harm, let's lock them up and deny them transplants and otherwise vilify them. It's for their good.

From TFA: "Garon, the lead singer for Nearly Dan, a Steely Dan cover-band...

You know, that should be grounds for removing him from the transplant list right there.

Though pot is already ridiculously easy to get in my area, I once considering getting a medical marijuana card. I decided against it for fear of stuff like this.

This whole farce of a law is actually the result of "what could possibly go wrong?"

I don't even do drugs, and I still think you're a farking moron. I guess I'm all for anything that gets more self-righteous, hate-mongerers off our planet. So, maybe you could donate your liver, the whole thing, please. May as well donate the rest of your organs too, but keep the brain I'm pretty sure yours is broken.

This might be another factor in the transplant committee's decision other than the pot.

This.

Pot is no more addictive than chocolate cake. Drug use is only one addiction. Gambling, smoking, drinking, sex, food, body modification, coffee...there are a lot of vices out there.

no, perhaps he was taken off the list, not ONLY for
marijuana, but because he shared needles with "speed freaks". This constitutes an addictive behavior.
Betcha 5 bucks the story has been skewed to promote a pro marijuana, anti insurance agenda.

Is a liver transplant really the indicated treatment for hep C? Do any medical types in this board know?

Won't the hepatitis virus just eat up the new liver? The whole point of not giving a current alcoholic a new liver is not that someone who drinks too much deserves to die. The point is the limited supply of organs should go to the people who can benefit most from transplants. TFA did not quote the people who denied him the transplant. Was the decision really made over pot, or did it have more to do with the hepatitis in the patient's bloodstream?

How the fark is use of a substance an indicator of an addictive personality? Use =/= addiction. Are people that have sex sex addicts? Are people that drink beer alcoholics? Why are people that use illegal drugs (federal) recreationally or medicinally deemed to be addicts or as having addictive personalities??

Actually, the new reports out say that Marijuana does hurt the livers of those with HCV. Regardless, it was retarded to refuse the patient a transplant.

Hopefully they will come up with a cure for this freaking disease.

My 2 year old son has Hep C. Poor baby.

milk_plus 2008-04-26 10:09:52 PM
The liver is a gateway organ. I know it's not addictive or anything but pretty soon a person receiving a transplant is going to want a kidney, then a lung, and then a heart.

THIS.

I'm thinking the author of the article is trying to start some sort of marijuana flame war, but in the past he used to share needles and only in recent years pot's been his only drug of choice, obviously we don't have all the facts but it sounds like he was doing other drugs as well up until recently. So yeah, I'm sure it's his formal drug use had more bearing on the decision then is current medical pot

Yeah, hep c will eat the new liver. But in end stage cases, it's transplant or die. The " treatment " for HCV is 48 weeks of injections and is only 50% effective.
