About damn time someone did this.

The sooner this drifts over to the US, the better.

I've been praying for this to happen in BC for years. But it should be 65.

THIS and THIS, some idiot lady ran a yield and almost hit my car Thursday. More people need to be declared unfit to drive because many are.

although an argument can be made that this is 'discriminatory,' i think it is a good idea. i know my grandma has some age-related health issues that impair her ability to drive in some conditions, so she doesn't drive in those conditions (night, bad weather). but not all elderly people are the same way - plenty drive when they probably shouldnt anymore. not like we all havent been behind granny on the road going 23 in a 40....

/but there are crappy drivers of all ages
//cops should pull over people more often for things like driving too slow - just as dangerous as speeding
///sucks if you have a condition that impairs your driving and you wont be able to anymore - but its unfair to everyone else on the road when you're a danger

It should be 65 and the US should adopt a similar policy.

That number will be a lot higher in the U.S. Quick, someone get this legislation passed post haste!

Excellent idea, but I'd rather see it a little more often than every 10 years. 10 years ago my grandmother was fine, now she can't remember what she did 10 minutes ago.

Its a start, but there are enough dumb people on the road that these compulsary tests should be given to anyone on the road yearly, and retests every 5. We'd have far safer roads.

You heard me. Expensive, yes; Pain in the arse, definately. But you tell me, how long ago was your driving test, and how many bad driving habits do you have?

Yes, let's make the tests yearly and for everyone. I need to spend more time standing in line at the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Yeah, I can read, but you contradicted yourself in the same breath. Should it be retests yearly, or every five years??

SweetDickens 2008-04-26 04:01:46 PM
What they really need to test for is night vision blindness. Regardless of the age.......

Seriously.... seriously.... guys, seriously. I've been hit three times in my life, and all three times by some geriatric tart in an American-built sedan the size of Wisconsin. TWICE, they just kept driving out of sheer panic and didn't even as much as stop to make sure their own car was roadworthy.

What is so "insensitive" about asking people who's motor skills and ability to rationalize situations to take a tiny little test to make sure that the one ton death machine they are driving is in good hands?

Because they'll invariably biatch and whine with something to the effect of "Well son, I been drivin since you were knee-high to a grasshopper, I have!!" That's old people's excuse for everything when they're accused of something, be it bad driving or being an asshole or what have you. Just insert respective action in place of "drivin" in the comment and that'll be the defense.

It's the same in Ga at least. My father's birthday is
a few days before mine. I got my license in the mail first.
Weeks later his hadn't come. I called the DOT and the lady
asked his age, he had to go in and pass the eye test...

A 78 year old nearly killed me last year. My grandfather / grandmother had the sense to give up the vehicle keys at a point. I can only hope that I show the same sense when the time comes.

Oh, the 78 year old that nearly killed me was in a hurry. He went around two vehicles waiting for me to clear the intersection before they turned left. So he not only nearly killed me, he technically cut two other people off by turning left from the wrong lane.

I think anyone that breaks the law and causes an injury accident should lose their license until they take both the written and road tests again.

/farking idiots should lose their licenses

Yeah, now that you mention it my grandma told me to take her keys away when she started being a crappy driver... Should have done it some time ago but haven't got around to it yet.

There should be a rule that you have to show your driver's license to cash a Social Security check.

And by "show" I mean "We don't give it back to you"

Well mine didn't ask for us to take them, they literally gave them up. One day they were talking to some of my aunts / uncles and explained what they were going to do. My grandmother is still alive, and has her license, but she never drives. One of the kids or grandkids goes for a visit and a drive to dinner, the grocery store, department store, pharmacy, et al, and we take "her" car. Gives us an extra reason to go there ;)

This needs to happen. 75 is a good start, 65 would be better.

I'm no fan of more time at the dmv, but people need to realize that their ability to operate a two ton missile at high speeds degrades along with their other capacities.

Good driver still? Great. Not so much? Lobby for better public transportation, make friends, or realize that no, you don't have to pile into the land yacht to run down to the corner store. Getting off your ass and walking is good for everyone, regardless of age.

Handicapped? Sorry, take the test too. If you pass, you can keep your placard. If not, stop trying to farking kill me.

Slippery slope? In this one case, I'll take it. I can drive, I can ride. I'll prove it if I have to. I might whine, but if it means there are fewer blue hairs to dodge on my bike, I'll take it.

Actually, while not quite the right idea, you are on the right track. We spend a tremendous amount of our medical resources in this country keeping old people alive. All that treatment the 80 year old cancer victim is getting to try to live another two years is costing us. How much more can that elderly person contribute? Would saving someone in the prime of their life make a lot more sense? Think of all the productivity they still have.

762 2008-04-26 06:20:36 PM
Those who think such a thing might actually be possible in the US have obviously never heard of the AARP.

HoratioGates 2008-04-26 06:36:53 PM
Why 75? Lots of people's eyesight starts to change in their late 30's/early 40's. It's not like it would be hard to test eyesight every five years or so.

We have something like this in the UK. Some idiot in oncoming traffic failed to see me, and turned across my path to get into a side road. Very little doubt in anybody's mind that she was entirely to blame. The police gave her a choice - either voluntarily take a driver retraining course and pass the assessment there at the end, or get properly prosecuted. All the smart people choose the retraining.

Over 75? No.

EVERYONE needs this. In the goddamn U.S I mean. If you renew your license, you take a written test, an eye test and a practical driving test. If you fail you can take the farking bus, and if they don't have public transport in your area get GM to sponsor it.

People should at least have to take the written test. It only takes a few minutes anyway. It's mostly common sense anyway, and if someone can't get that right they DON'T need to be driving.
