I came here to say why in the hell would Wisconsin feel the need to recite the pledge in Spanish? After RTFA all I have to say is, sand/vagina.

You know, I had a few comments pasted in here and I was prepared to refer to each of the comments and explain why the person responsible for the comments was a complete and utter retard. But, by the time that jackass said it disrespected the troops...I lost it.

I know. One day a year Spanish students say the pledge over the intercom in Spanish and this "disrespects the troops?" How farking stupid.

Hmm. Wonder if that includes the troops THAT SPEAK SPANISH. 'Cause a lot of people in America do. And why does everybody drag "the troops" into their hissy fit? "The troops" are now the "new children."

The following day, the Janesville Gazette ran a story entitled "Spanish Pledge Angers Veteran."

It quoted Todd Dix, whose son goes to the high school.

"This is America; we speak English," said Dix, who retired from the National Guard last year.

As a career active duty soldier, I'm getting a kick out of these replies already. As far as I'm concerned, no BFD.

Seriously, I'm not offended by this. Did they recite the Mexican pledge? Um, no. Americans should be honored that foreigners in our country recite the Pledge in any language, just as long as ours gets recited before any others.

When I was in Korea (3 1/2 years), every military ceremony I attended -- including my own change of command -- featured someone singing the American National Anthem in English, followed by the Korean one, in Korean. The Koreans in the audience loved us for allowing theirs. (But we wouldn't have dared translate theirs into English, because it probably wouldn't have made any sense.)

IMHO, the morans in Wisconsin need to STFU and just be glad someone's honoring our flag, no matter what the language.

My family came from Germany in the late 1840's. They continued to speak German at home up until the start of World War I when my great-grandparents banned it. They stopped speaking German and sent my grandfather off to fight the Hun.

Level of patriotism for the adopted country is not necessarily proportional to the English spoken. They are reciting the Pledge of Allegiance for crying out loud and allegiance is the same in any language.

We have a problem with illegal immigration...as in law breakers....we don't have a problem with legal immigrants still speaking their native language after they arrive.

We are trying to stop illegal immigration....not Spanish speakers.

(one way to decrease illegal immigration is to streamline the process for legal immigration and raise quotas to the number we actually need to make people want to go through the legal process)

I went to a high school in WI, so I'm getting a kick out of these responses...

Anyways, I remember when I was in sophomore English, which was held at the time of day they gave the Pledge over the intercom. Some assholes in the class (mainly the conservatards, btw) would purposefully mumble the Pledge. Our teacher, who was a huge liberal and didn't even say the pledge (but still stood up when it was spoken) finally yelled at them one day. And he was the defensive coach for the football team, so he was a big guy.

/now THAT was disrepsecting the pledge
//that said, I'm glad I don't have to repeat it anymore

I had to learn this in Spanish class about 18 years ago. Here's my attempt (it surely has flaws):

Juro fidelidad a la bandera de Los Estatos Unidos de America. Y a la republica, que representa, una nacion, debajo de Dios, indivisible, con libertad y justicia para todos.

FTFA: It also invites foreign exchange students (the school now has three) to say it in their own language.

If you're a citizen of another country and just in the US as a visitor, what are you doing pledging allegiance to the American flag? Either you don't mean what you're saying or you don't think much of your own country.

In the article it says that other students from the other language classes were invited to say the pledge in that language, too. For a day. So wth is the problem? If they said the pledge in French afterwards, would there be a hissyfit that the school "Doesn't love America"?

Actually there's a lot of Hispanic people in WI (MKE, at least)

I had a math teacher in high school who also happened to be the football coach (terrible, terrible combination btw), and he asked us to stand for the pledge every day, and one day a kid didn't and the teacher actually kicked him out of class. He wasn't even being insolent about it. I didn't stand up for it anymore after that.

logic523: Juro fidelidad a la bandera de Los Estatos Unidos de America. Y a la republica, que representa, una nacion, debajo de Dios, indivisible, con libertad y justicia para todos.

nicely done.

just a couple of things:

no comma between y a la republica que representa. "and to the republic for which it stands". Though schoolkids often pause in between I think that's supposed to be one untinterrupted phrase.

/maybe I'm wrong, see what other farkers think

I think you're onto a new paradigm that's spreading like a pox:

1) Anyone under 23 is referred to as a "child".
2) Most of the troops are under 23.

So, indeed their has been a *tweek* in the minds of a lot of Scared Americans:

Troops = Children = OMG WE MUST PROTECT AND THINK OF THEM!!

Scary stuff. We send our children to get shot up, and then grouse when they get treated like adults by other Americans. We live in a messed-up time.

We're not a "nation of immigrants," at least not yet. I was born here and so was the majority of the American population. If you mean that our ancestors came here as immigrants, then by that standard everybody everywhere except the Fertile Crescent is an immigrant.

It's the Spanish class.. saying the pledge in Spanish.. this is such a non-issue. It's not like it's LA and every class is in spanish.
