+1 for the headline, but I'm not sure anyone else will even know who Kyuss are subby.

I liked Kyuss better than QOTSA, but I know that's weird.

I like Sigur Ros better than all sortsa stuff though. They're awesome.

Not sure who Kyuss is or how they sound like, but I do like Sigur, so a new record will be welcome. A studio version of Nýja Lagið would be cool...

New record is good news.

But don't knock Radiohead.

I only know who Kyuss is because Tool did a cover of "Demon Cleaner".

Just sayin'.

Sigur Ros is awesome. Especially in concert.

It's like what going to see Godspeed You Black Emperor was like. For the first five minutes of a song, people are kinda waving around, dancing.. but after 10 minutes everyone is just standing around looking at their feet.

20 minutes into a song, some people are now sitting, and others are talking on their cell phones.

A full half hour in, people are talking to each other, wondering if this is really the band from "that Vanilla Sky movie."

As a Therion fan I am not impressed.

I actually preferred QOTSA over Kyuss... but that's just me. Kyuss was good, though.

I was into Kyuss before I even heard of the Masters of Reality (Blue Garden of course).

But that's neither here nor there because Sigor Ros is great.

I really like "Takk..."
but "( )"... not as much...

[IMHO hopelandic doesn't sound that much different than their real icelandic language... but the "( )" album has too many repeated Hopelandic phrases and words it just gets a tiny bit annoying after awhile...]
ie. on "( )" them saying [approximated] "you shydilo.... yeh shye...." about 10 times more than necessary throughout the whole album...

I've heard OF Kyuss... somewhere.... at some point of time... i don't think i've heard any of their music tho...

p.s. this new album of theirs sounds pretty neat / awesome.

Sigur Ros bores the ever-loving fark out of me. Not quite sure why they seem to have gotten (relatively) the most mainstream attention of all the post-rock bands.

Hopelandic = Gibberishiathought we were all clear about that by now.

I love Sigur Ros and saw them at Massey Hall in Toronto. It was incredible.

I always felt that the repetition of that nonsensical phrase actually added to the intensity of the last few tracks on the album, so () is actually my favorite of theirs. But to each his own, of course.

No kidding. I like Sigur Ros but the guy sounds like a cat meowing at times. When they have their madeup language has apparently contains just a few syllables, it's just gimmicky.

Oh, and take the ride cymbal away from Radiohead. Their drummer doesn't know what else to do when it's yet another mid-tempo song with Thom moaning.

The Fark filter doesn't like words ending in "sh" followed by words starting with "t".

I'd have to disagree; Takk isn't a better album than Ágætis Byrjun, but it's more accessible, and so it's what I recommend to people who haven't heard them before.

Sorry, I think the correct answer for a Sigur Ros fan has to be fark people that don't get it ;)

/just kidding, I love me some sigur ros. The new movie/documentary (i won't try to spell it starts with an h) is pretty kickass too

No worries.
a few statements:
- no, I was not implying it was an actual language. I know that it was made up by the band and/or lead singer.
- The only things I don't like that much about "( )" are the [hopelandic made up] lyrics, and some repeated vocal melodies. The rest is pretty damn great. I think one critic desrcibed their sound as 'glacial' and i think that's rather accurate... although sometimes it's more like a minor or medium avalanche... the expansive [massive?] guitar sound is awesome... and the buildups are great too... [in a way the music on "( )" kind of reminds me of parts of the "lift your tiny..." album by Godspeed You Black Emporer!. However, sometimes i find the general sound or maybe some music on "( )" to be kind of cold and clinical.

Overall, tho, I like "Takk..." better .... like MikeZpop said up there, it's "more accessible"... and has a general warmth and positiveness that the stark, cold antarctic type sound of "( )" generally doesn't.

/ it takes guts to make up a language and sing in it.
// it also takes guts to call your album "( )" and not have any track titles anywhere on the cd.
/// i admire that.

I never get to do this, so, ahem:

I used to go to my local record store when I was thirteen, and the owner used to have a big box of promotional cassettes. He'd let me dig through them and pick out what I wanted for a dollar. There were a bunch of duds...Chainsaw Kittens, Amygdala, Mindbomb, etc.... But one day I scored an advance copy of Kyuss's "Wretch". I listened to that thing for my entire sophomore year.

When "Blues for the Red Sun" came out, I bought it on release day. I couldn't believe they actually made it to Headbanger's Ball!

I saw them at tiny clubs like The Edge and Bottom of the Hill, but I also saw them open for Faith No More.

So, in short, I'm cooler than you. Much, much cooler.

/My first ever internet purchase: QOTSA's first album from the Man's Ruin website

There can never be enough mentions of Kyuss,Masters of Reality or QOTSA for my taste. You can even throw in some Brant Bjork and the Bros while you're at it.

pic... magma MDK

I've heard OF Magma, and read about them, but i've never listened to any of their music. I saw an early double-record [or was it just a one LP?] of theirs at my fav. vinyl music store about a year ago, but it was $50.
They sound pretty cool.

thanks for that album cover... pretty neat design.

so... lemme guess... they beat Sigur Ros to the punch [by at least 35 years....early or mid 70's?] by inventing their own language and singing in it? Are they a German or European band?
[i haven't read about Magma for a while, so forgive my skimpy details.]

Sorry to get back so late to the thread. Magma was/is the brainchild of drummer Christian Vander; they're a sort of jazz/avant-garde/classical rock orchestra primarily from France, although they've had members from other European countries. Vander wanted to tell an SF story with the music, and created a huge story cycle revolving around the mythical planet Kobaia. For this, he created a language (Kobaian) to tell the story in. (Some of the band's followers can actually speak in Kobaian, supposedly.) The language sounds a bit like Volapuk (another constructed language) to this linguist.

Their best albums, IMO, are MDK (Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh) and Kohntarkohz, although the Live/Hhai set is a good starting point. They're not for lightweights, and you'd better be a serious prog-head to take the plunge. I'm not a major Magma geek, but it's definitely fun for the occasional spin.

The design on that image is their standard logo.

Don't get me wrong--I really like Sigur Ros, so I wasn't criticizing them by pointing out that they weren't the first band to sing in a con-lang.
