Come on, he had some good songs.

Besides, after watching "American Psycho", I'll never think of Sussudio the same way again.

Die in a fire, he did good work with Genesis.

Granted, not as good as Peter Gabriel, but still good.

I, too, liked his stuff with Genesis, and still think he's good.

I was gonna post Link (new window)

but that would be being snarky just for the sake of being snarky.

hockeyfarker: BA DUM BA DUM BA DUM DUM DUM DUMDUMDUM got it spot on. Is there anyone who doesn't like that?

This is sad. Good work with Genesis, good solo work, and one of the best drummers there is as part of the bargain.

I Like Bread 2008-04-25 07:54:54 PM
If you don't mind, I'd rather take this with a grain of salt. The article says he "has no plans"-- which is what he said when he left Genesis in 1996, right after his last solo tour, and again right before the reunion tour.

We'll see how he feels in a year. Not that he doesn't deserve retirement, but artists never do retire.

Why can't he just stick to playing drums? That's his one talent, after all.

Genesis sucked and Phil's solo work blows.

MikoSquiz: Why can't he just stick to playing drums? That's his one talent, after all.

Correct. Listen to his work with Brand X. (pops)

Dear Phil Collins,

Please reunite the awesome version of Genesis (Gabriel, Hackett, Banks, Rutherford and yourself) before you retire.

Thanks,
maximum jack

In The Air Tonight is just a horrible song, but his whole body of work is pretty impressive.

I love Phil Collins. You can't argue with all the Top Ten hits he had. Good stuff.

Crude 2008-04-26 10:28:10 AM
I thought he retired a few years ago because he had massive hearing loss.

Crude

Yeah, he has been going deaf for several years now. It's really kind of a shame.

notmtwain [TotalFark] 2008-04-26 10:51:28 AM
He deserves a fabulous retirement and I'm so thankful that I got to see Genesis one more time last fall.

Thanks Phil!

No, his tinnitis apparently went away. Or so he was told.

GibbyTheMole 2008-04-26 01:56:35 PM
Say what you will, he's still one of the best drummers in the biz. And I like a fair amount of his work with Genesis, though I prefer the Peter Gabriel era stuff.

I think Phil himself would probably admit that a lot of the stuff he's responsible for unleashing on the music-consuming public, was created for monetary rather than artistic reasons. It's not that he's not capable of creating quality music, he's just made the choice to to where the money is, which is unfortunate.

Wow. Either there are a lot of trolls in this thread, or you all have HORRIBLE taste in music.

Phil Collins: okay drummer, but good lord do not let him near a microphone

THIS, dammit. THIS.

Phil does change his mind a lot, but if it's really true he's retiring I feel bad for Steve Hackett. Nobody outside of music geeks knows his work, and that's the way it'll stay if there's no 5-man tour.

Unless Chester doesn't mind flying solo back there...

It's b) they have horrible taste.

musicky 2008-04-26 10:50:50 PM
Phil Collins had plenty of good songs and a few great songs, but when he did a bad one, oh boy was it painful. There's no "tolerable" middle ground at all.

Good: In The Air Tonight, The Roof Is Leaking, I Wish It Would Rain Down

One More Night, A Groovy Kind of Love, Another Day In Paradise: DO NOT WANT. They weren't even the amusing kind of bad.

I like his drumming and I don't mind his voice or his songwriting, although they're not stellar by any stretch of the imagination. The synthesizers are the biggest problem; there's the constant onslaught of the nursery-rhyme celeste and handclaps and phasey brass all topped off with a heaping helping of LFO vibrato.

This, also his horrible voice makes me want/need to punch babies.
