I watched someone try to do this in front of me at a Best Buy once. It was with a printer that had apparently been on the wrong shelf, and the lady in question, whom I couldn't help but notice was wearing a fanny pack that barely fit around her waist, was loudly arguing with the 16-year-old dangly-earring-wearing clerk that if the store made a mistake in where it stocked the item, the store had to honor the price, uh-huh. And it wasn't her fault that the store couldn't stock its shelves right, uh-uh. And she was gonna call her lawyer, uh-huh. And someone was gonna get fired, uh-huh. And the manager had to walk back there with her, presumably to point out that the printer didn't, in fact, cost the same amount of money as the printer cartridges below it, uh-uh.

When you say someone tried to do this you mean in in way like this at all. Right?

I was involved in some research among some of the bigger retailers a couple of years ago- this problem is more common than you might expect (and it occasionally works).

I wouldn't presume that. Have you priced printer cartridges lately?

I tried this once, it's a biatch to get that 52" HDTV over the scanner in the self serve line at costco.

Crosshair [TotalFark] 2008-04-25 02:11:12 PM
Idiots, the way to get away with it is to put the UPC from a $500 TV onto a $800 TV. Not put a UPC from a bag of socks onto the $800 TV.

Talon [TotalFark] 2008-04-25 02:17:41 PM
If you're going to do this, do what Crosshair says: Take a sticker from a similar product, preferrably one from the same brand, and put it on the more expensive one. Want your 500 dollar Ipod for 100 dollars? switch the stickers on two different ipods. There's no chance in hell you will get a 99% deduction in the price, but you could probably get it for half price.

Granted, this is illegal. So you probably shouldn't do this at all. But if you're going to do it, do it right.

I used to work at wal-mart and home depot. This happens ALL the time. We also had to ask people to lift the baby seat out of the cart. Frequently there was an expensive but thin box (think dvd player or vcr) under a blanket, under the baby. At Home Depot, people will fill the 50 gal trashcans with stuff and jam the lid on not expecting us open the can. DUR!

they are closely related. the difference is that one's a felony and the other's just some lady being a total biatch.

essentially, these people are trying to take advantage of the store for making a mistake (or they tried to make it look like the store made such a mistake).

KIRKSVILLE - A Kirksville man faces a felony indictment after trying to purchase a LCD television for less than $3 by allegedly replacing its UPC code with that of a water bottle.

. . .

According to documents filed in Adair County Circuit Court, Newman allegedly tried to purchase a 26-inch Viore LCD television from Wal-Mart, claiming the UPC code valued at $3.16 was the proper code the [sic] television, which normally sells for more than $517.

Where I come from, $3.16 is actually more that $3.00.

Normally he does (and it's why he's one of my Favorites), but "fat lady is an asshat at Best Buy" is neither unusual nor particularly humorous, especially from him.

\Is in a "shoot the white trash" mood today

Why sticker pick?

If you look hard enough, you can find scratch and dent deals for cheap...

/posting this on a 42" I got for $200 - had to replace the LCD ribbon cable.
/the 46" 1080p in the Den was $450 - it has a bunged up corner on the bezel.

In his defense, this did happen at Wal-Mart, so there was a pretty good chance of it working.

The other day I was at the self check-out lane at Krogers when a lady stated flipping out because she claimed that she gave the kid at the desk a $50 and only received change for a $10. Total meltdown. She was screaming and crying and holding her chest like she was about to seize. I guess I was mesmerised by the freak-out because I just picked up my bags and walked out without paying. It was about $40 worth of food. I didnt realise what I had done until I got to my hair-cut appointment where I had a minor panic attack. I imagined hundreds of 1930's era police radio cars issuing forth into the night to track me down. I even contemplpated an anonymous phone call with directions to the location of the goods. I finally just took them back and tried to explained what happenned but the fu*kin' counter monkey didnt believe me. I told him to look at the register history but he just didnt want to deal with it and told me to forget about it.

Most delicious groceries ever.

I worked at McDonald's, and people would do this all the time. farking scam artists. If they insisted that they really didn't receive the correct change, I'd have to pull the drawer, and immediately count it. I think this happened at least 10 times to me, and I think once they were actually right.

I something just like this too except it was on an airplane and it involved ocelots and not printers.

It's an unlikely mistake, I agree. The best cashiers are the ones who take your money and announce what they are receiving: "4.06 and you're paying $10... Here is $5.94 back."

I good cashier leaves the received bill lying sideways across the top of the drawer until after they've handed back the change. That way there can't be any debate about what the custy paid with.
