Not bad for a boy band....

I know the guys who were the opening act "The Nerve Breakers".

It is funny that twice as many people who can fit in that venue have told me that they were there.

Any Dallas Farkers out there remeber The Hot Klub?

Man, those people in the interview sure are dumb. Well, not all of them, just the people who didn't get it.

Just stopping by before some snot-nosed Hot Topic wanker pops in to tell how much the Sex Pistols suck and how Green Day is the greatest punk band ever.

"Never Mind the Bollocks" was #108 on the Billboard album chart at the time of this report.
It peaked at #106.

It took many years for the Sex Pistols to be widely acclaimed in this country. They were frequently dismissed as mere noise by a great many listeners of the day. It was a far cry from KISS and Fleetwood Mac and the Bee Gees, all of whom sold many, many more albums at the time.

I was aware of the Sex Pistols, but I didn't become a fan until ten years later when I was in college. I was listening to old Simon & Garfunkel and the Commodores in the late 70's.

Dr.Zom 2008-04-25 04:20:22 PM
Wow, that was remarkably even-handed reporting and the Pistols didn't sound half-bad.

The guy talking at around 3:50 is ridiculous. What the hell is wrong with his makeup and jewelry and stuff? You're doing it wrong.

Anyway, yeah, this wasn't as biased as I thought it might be. I kinda wish I was around back then to see them play.

Oh please, stay home and play your own music you twit.

I'm almost positive that the kid saying that was bullshiatting the reporter. Did you see the smile on his face as after he said that?

Punks aren't stupid, just... obnoxious.

The last ticket I bought - $7.50 was the "convenience" I had to pay Ticketmaster for providing me with a ticket.

I was interviewed outside Randy's Rodeo in San Antonio, but I'm pretty sure my language rendered it useless for broadcast purposes.

I was on a Texas punk sampler album with them. Was supposed to see the Pistols in Dallas too, but missed my ride up from Houston. Was hoping I'd spot a friend among the crowd shots, but no such luck.

so am i like the only one that understands that punk rock is actually an american tradition?
seriously, Iggy and the Stooges, folks. that's 1967. well before ANY british punk rock was hitting the scene.
every time he said "british" or "from britain," i could feel myself dying a little bit inside.

3.50 for a ticket to see the most notorious band in the world at the time? A bargain. Whether they loved it or hated it there isn't a person who was there who hasn't told everyone they know about it.

Paid 22.00 to see Nirvana, the most notorious band in the world at the time, October 1993. Also a bargain.

hecticthe13th 2008-04-25 10:04:14 PM
also, let us be clear on this--the sex pistols are completely, wholly terrible, and frankly a disgrace to anything calling itself punk rock.
there are so many better punk bands from that era...that the sex pistols ripped off wholly and then took all the credit for.

Also: they were basically an advertising gimmick for Malcolm McLaren. Nothing more, nothing less. they kicked out the only talented member of the group for liking the beatles; not only did that set the tone for the group, but it also marked the point where they went(farther) downhill.

Maybe.

I prefer Johnny Rotten's, "Ever get the feeling you've been cheated?"

This is a period tape, you get that, right? Made by a local TV station, not "punk rock historians," only a week or two after the Pistols played in Dallas in early 1978. The British punk movement, no matter its antecedents, was something of a media sensation, and a lot of young people latched onto the music and then worked backwards. Are you really that surprised that some kid in Dallas (or some Dallas TV guy) was talking about what was new for them right then and there, as opposed to espousing the merits of punk's forebears?

pocketrubbish 2008-04-26 12:09:25 AM
Oh no, people to educate me on the pistols and how they are really not punx!

The Sex Pistols will always be awesome. Punk rock has no ideology deeper than "smash stuff", and it should always stay that way.

NaturalDrunkenPungence 2008-04-26 12:10:32 AM
Cue pointless Sex Pistols argument... NOW.
Seriously, c'mon, they're a very polarizing group. WHICH WAS ONE OF THEIR GOALS! So let's play the Music Elitist game, shall we?
Some people say "Boy band!" some people say "Punk icons!"
Who cares? If you like the music, listen to it, if you don't, listen to something else and stfu.
I happen to like the Sex Pistols. And by the way, they existed before Malcolm McClaren got to them, with their old singer, Wally Nightengale(sp?).

In conclusion,
THIS

Get what? The Sex Pistols, after seeing them once in some shiatty bar? First off, why should they 'get' the Sex Pistols, who were mostly for show anyway, couldn't play for shiat, and were and still are more famous for their novelty than their music?

Secondly, they might have sounded like crap that night.

Third, new musical styles take a while to embrace. Most people aren't going to immediately "get" a new style, especially one faster and louder and more obnoxious than previous styles.

So I'd say that most sensible people *should* react like the ones who didn't get it. The ones that liked the Sex Pistols already liked them. The others at least gave them a chance, and wanted to see what all the fuss was about. Any fans "converted" that night were probably stupid posers who liked the look or attitude rather than the music, which was principally how the Pistols got over in the U.K., a few catchy songs notwithstanding.

Music Nerd 2008-04-26 10:53:56 AM
The band thought of themselves as rock band rather than a punk band so enough whining about them not being punk enuff.

Mmm, no. There may have been "a" Longhorn Ballroom in Fort Worth, but "the" Longhorn Ballroom" was (and is still, if I'm not mistaken) in Dallas.

The Longhorn Ballroom is in Dallas, Texas

I have seen many a great show there. In fact the loudest show I have ever seen was there. It was Motor Head, The Cromags, and Wendy O Williams.

Also had the privilege to interview Mick Jones back stage after a Big Audio Dynamite show at that venue.

bottom line - they changed music, and to some degree, the world. There are only a handful of bands that can honestly make that claim.

/the first time i heard the pistols i said 'but thats just 3 chord rock & roll - whats the big deal?' After hearing how horrendous the punk rockers were i was expecting something unlistenable.

sunlion 2008-04-27 08:30:14 AM
If I remember right, someone from the local Dallas punk band Stickmen With Ray Guns hit someone in Sex Pistols in the head with a bottle. At that show, I think.

New Age Redneck 2008-04-27 12:59:51 PM
Ooops. My bad. Close enough for punk rock. Still applies to 99% of the music released these days.

allegedman 2008-04-28 06:05:36 PM
punk rock today is not punk rock is just some dudes who think they are cool singing and whining about women.

sex pistols were alright Crass, a lil better.

NaturalDrunkenPungence 2008-04-29 01:04:46 AM
Allegedman, you're not listening to the right bands. There's still punk out there, but don't expect to turn on the TV and find it, it takes a bit of searching.
