Elton John played the mellotron on many of his early albums.

Here's a little more recent run-through with a Mellotron. The one she's playing has flute, violin and cello, but no vocal chorus.

Was/Is this "Pinder" subby speaks of in The Moody Blues?
[i'm drawing a blank].

Moody Blues used both a real orchestra AND a mellotron on "Days of Future Passed". [Probably my fav. Moody Blues album... the only other one I own is "distant Voyager"... other than that I'm afraid i'm not too knowledgable regarding them.

Don't forget Banks, subby. oh wait. that's what the etc. was for.
His mellotron sound/work on "Watcher of the Skies" from that 1973 Live disc is very loud and powerful.... much more so than the studio version, [where it sounded kind of weak and thin].
[yes i know Genesis had sound quality problems on "Tresspass" and "Nursery Cryme". It improved a lot for "Foxtrot", tho.

The KC's Mellotron work on "In the Court", "In the Wake of Poseidon" and even "Lizard" is quite stellar indeed.

/ likes me some string Mellotron, but I find that the Choir and Flute mellotron are even more eerie and haunting sometimes.

Third_Uncle_Eno: Was/Is this "Pinder" subby speaks of in The Moody Blues?

Yes. In his final album with them he even mentions the Mellotron by name in the lyrics to one of the songs.

The first twenty minutes on a new set of tapes was the best.
The tapes in the video were definitely not new.

The extra nineteen tape racks, replacement capstans, pinch rollers, felts, headbars, keys, motors, and amps were what made the keyboard roadie such an unhappy person on tour.

Yes, I used to own one.

I thought you were serious, but then I watched the vids! Thanks for the laugh! +1, buddy!

DrBenway Here's a little more recent run-through with a Mellotron

She seems to be as dumb as a stump (pitch "bending" is not the same as pitch "shifting" or "transposing"), but I enjoyed her enthusiasm nonetheless.

Although it has been surpassed in this digital age, the Mellotron is certainly one of the most revolutionary inventions ever created. I applaud the people who conceived this idea.

anonwums: Mellotron Scratch anyone?

Let me tell you how that went with me. About a year and a half ago I came across an article about the Mellotron that made reference to Porcupine Tree and their current day use of the Mellotron (actually a Mellotron sampler) and specifically to Mellotron Scratch. That led me to Deadwing, which led to the Arriving Somewhere DVD, which led to Fear of a Blank Planet, which led to an 8 hour drive to see them live, which led to acquisition of most of the back catalog (along with the 5.1 DVDAs where they were available). And seeing them live again last fall.

Be careful about clicking that link.

did anyone else read this as "Deltron 3030"? When does than dang sequel come out, anyway?
