FTFA The Smashing Pumpkins garnered media, critics and fan acclaim due to the release of their two most popular and multiplatinum albums, 1993's "Siamese Dream" and 1995's double album "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness."

Yeah, OK but Gish was better than both combined

Sorry, man, you're not being persecuted by anyone, the underdog thing was cool 15 years ago but now you're a world famous musician with a dedicated fan base who still adores you after all these years. No one is going to believe everywhere you go people trash you to your face.

Hate to break it you ya Billy, but you're loved.

yay, another smashing pumpkins thread... we get to read about how everyone hates Corgan's self-loathing but loves the material it produced.

I have nothing negative to say about this band. I just simply like them.

Today is the greatest day you've ever known.

I love how as soon as somebody mentions a band there's a thread full of "I was a fan until they became famous, then they became a big ball of suck." Like the Cure thread the other day, everybody jumping ship because of "Just Like Heaven." That's a shame, because they missed Disintegration and Wish. And by that I mean the whole album and not "Lovesong" and "High."

As for Gish being better than Siamese and Mellon Collie, come on now. Get rid of the singles off all the albums and what are you left with? Bury Me, Tristessa if we're going to get all technical and appease the Internet Police (it wasn't really a single off of Gish, but a single released before Gish.) I could go without listening to the rest of Gish in order to keep Hummer, Mayonaise, Geek USA, Silverfark, Porcelina of the Vast Oceans, Thru the Eyes of Ruby, and so on...

I had heard Gish in 1992 when I was a DJ at school, and I had never heard anything like it before. I became an instant Pumpkins fan and am a huge fan to this day. Until then I was immersed in the Madchester bands, the Pumpkins brought me back to American bands. Front to (almost) back Siamese Dream is the best Pumpkins album. I tend to get lazy after Silverfark, and occasionally skip Today and almost always skip Disarm.

Y'all who jumped ship after Mellon Collie missed Adore. Shame on you. Sh Sh Sh Sh Shame on you. :)

Actually, the critic blogosphere still doesn't like Corgan. It's not self persecution, they really hate the guy for whatever. Can't say I've ever had an issue with him....when I met him he was actually pretty sweet. Then again, popular fact is that he's only nice to the girl fans.

and if you don't believe it, just ask Lou E. Dangerously. (new window)

and then I heard Kevin shields, and it all made sense.

Not to take anything away from corgan. He is a marvelous visionary, singer, guitarist, producer, songwriter... I just wondered if he heard My bloody valentine?

Meh, If I liked cheezy and over used guitar riffs and obsessivly cliche lyrics about "killing my pain away", Id just shoot myself in the face.

MikoSquiz 2008-04-25 05:40:44 AM
I would totally love to have a version of Mellon Collie with half the songs ditched and the rest finished instead of being left as half-assed demos. Now that would be a classic for the ages.

Adore could've done with trimming a half dozen tracks off as well.

Machinas I and II were an unsalvageable load of balls and I haven't bothered to check out the new album yet.

Meh, I admit it - I like the Pumpkins and have for years. Sure. Billy Corgan is a whiny biatch who needs to have constant approval, but really, what rock star isn't?

Plus, they were some of the funniest guests ever on the Simpsons.

/I want a walk in humidor.

Cherub Rock says he has.

I like SP, but it seems like for every Cherub Rock they have, Corgan writes 2 or 3 Disarms.

First two albums = perfection, then he got gloomy and started dressing up like pinhead and thought introducing keyboards was a good idea.

kylemanor 2008-04-25 10:46:58 AM
I will defend Billy and The Smashing Pumpkins until my last breath. They are my favorite band of all time, and have helped me through so many rough patches, kept my spirits up when things were good, and allowed me to wallow in general malaise when things were "meh." Thank you, Billy.

\SP haters have their own ring of hell

Siamese Dream is one of the best albums to come out of the 90s.

Mellon Collie... yeeeeeeeeeah. Not bad, not great. I give it a C+.

After that, they had a couple good singles, but not much worth listening to. Once Corgan went gothy, they fell off the radar.

/saw them live, Mellon Collie tour
//they sucked
///I was bummed

Getting dissed is an occupational hazard of the "lame band" industry.

carmody: Getting dissed is an occupational hazard of the "lame band" industry.

But only in the 20th century when the word 'dissed' was still used.

No way.. Machina might not have been a great commercial or critical success, but it was about 5 years ahead of it's time. The concept, the image, the sound, all of it has been mined and re-fashion to great success by a multitude of bands within the last few years.

There is no need to wonder, Loveless is why his career exists. He used the same producer Alan Moulder for Siamese Dream onward. The loss of that brittle sound from Gish was not an accident.

I met Billy Corgan once. It was before a show in Philly. He was really nice to me and actually talked to me for quite awhile, but I am a girl. I personally prefer Pisces Iscariot, I think, of all "their" albums, but thats just me.

/Also saw Mellon Collie tour, and they did suck live. They started "Love" twice, messed up, and had to stop and play a different song

tical 2008-04-25 05:39:16 PM
He is, for the most part, persecuted by Music Media (ie Pitchfork)He still does have a dedicated fan base; though his fanbase is his biggest critic.

/any Netphorians on here?
