Al-Qaida's No. 2 leader issued a new audiotape Tuesday accusing Shiite Iran of spreading a conspiracy theory about who carried out the Sept. 11 attacks to discredit the power of the Sunni terrorist network.

Ayman al-Zawahri, Osama bin Laden's deputy, has stepped up his denunciations of Iran in recent messages in part to depict al-Qaida as the Arabs' top defense against the Persian nation's rising power in the Middle East.

The increasing enmity toward Iran is a notable change of rhetoric from al-Zawahri, who in the past rarely mentioned the country -- apparently in a hopes he would be able to forge some sort of understanding with Tehran based on their common rivalry with the United States. Iran has long sought to distance itself from al-Qaida.
...

One questioner asked about the theory that has circulated in the Middle East and elsewhere that Israel was behind the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

Al-Zawahri accused Hezbollah's Al-Manar television of starting the rumor. "The purpose of this lie is clear -- (to suggest) that there are no heroes among the Sunnis who can hurt America as no else did in history. Iranian media snapped up this lie and repeated it," he said.

"Iran's aim here is also clear -- to cover up its involvement with America in invading the homes of Muslims in Afghanistan and Iraq," he added. Iran cooperated with the United States in the 2001 U.S. assault on Afghanistan that toppled al-Qaida's allies, the Taliban.

Al-Qaida has previously claimed responsibility for the Sept. 11 attacks.

This Iran country they speak of, it seems as though they would be a solid ally against Al-Qaida. How is that coming along?

This is enough to make me a denier.

Because if we don't claim it was martians working in cahoots with the Rockafellers, the terrorists truly win (this retarded battle).

/A better alternative is to have Al-Q and the conspiracy theorists fight in a steel cage. History books will reflect the victors story.

Hey, if I'd masterminded that kind of amazing strategic and tactical assault against the mightiest nation on Earth, and succeeded in crashing three of four planes into major buildings in major cities; yeah, I'd be really pissed if somebody else was claiming responsibility for it.

It's kind of twisted, but when you pull off that kind of blood, horror, devastation, death and murder, you kind of want credit where credit's due, ya know? Sort of like serial killers don't like copycats raining on their parade.

It was a few guys with small knives. Nothing amazingly tactical about it. In fact, past hijackers who actually landed the planes exhibited more skill.

Although most hijackers in the past who put the planes on the ground usually left the landings to the actual pilots. Hijackers in the 60's and 70's didn't start killing people till AFTER the planes were on the tarmac.

If Al Quaeda is bothered by the denial of their responsibility for 9/11 then by denying their responsibility we can't be doing what they want. Conversely by attributing blame to Al Quaeda we are giving the terrorists what they want.

So if you do not deny that Al Quaeda is responsible for 9/11 the terrorists have already won the war.

You would think. Its people are pro-western, it's in between two countries that we're failing at securing, it's oil-rich, and they are enemies with Al Qaeda. It's a rather absurd scenario for us to have Iran in our crosshairs given the more important issues that have yet to be taken care of.

Speaking of conspiracy theories... two retards in the cubicles behind mine just had an idiotic conversation about how white people don't look like black people or Chinese people, and how Chinese people supposedly look like indigenous Mexicans. The brilliant conclusion of the conversation went like this:

"I think it was aliens."
"Yeah, probably."

I have done a lot of serious 9/11 "alternative theory" research and no one in the "truth" movement takes seriously the allegations that "the Jews" or Israel were responsible.

Of course there are the "dancing Israelis" and the "art students" and the mysterious moving company...but those are largely thought to be Mossad monitoring operations.

Both the Mossad and the FBI were tracking the whereabouts and movements of the alleged hijackers shortly before the attacks. Make of that what you will.

That's an odd thing for a group that's never admitted to doing it before now to say. If you wanted the credit you should have said you did it right away, instead of denying involvement but praising whoever did it.

You'd think a professional group of terrorists would know that by now, especially over something as big as 9/11, you'd expect them to jump at the chance to say they did it, instead of waiting 5 years.

FTFY, loonie. They have said several times that they've done it. Unfortunately idiots ignore this fact and run with a bullshiat theory supported by nothing. They've said WHY they did it, and a sizable amount of people are told it's "because we're free" and bought it hook, line, and sinker.

Nah, to this day 9/11 isn't linked to Osama, at least according to the FBI's 10 most wanted list and everywhere else outside the Media's sphere of Bullshiat.

A lot of things were "lost in translation", outright manipulated, and taken out of context in his movies after 9/11, for instance him saying they didn't do it but praising whoever did became "Osama praises 9/11 hijackers" on CNN, making everyone assume with no evidence that he was to blame.

As far as publicly admitting to do it, only these recent people we've never heard of before are saying they did it. And even the FBI doesn't believe them, if they did you'd see changes about Osama.

/media reality =/= reality

The Kurds do not allow them in their region, and the Shiites, like the Iranians, detest al Qaeda. To understand why, one need only take note of the al Qaeda public diplomacy campaign over the past year or so on internet blogs. They implore the United States to bomb and invade Iran and destroy this apostate Shiite regime. As an aside, it gives me pause to learn that our vice president and some members of the Senate are aligned with al Qaeda on spreading the war to Iran."

Just Google for it. Here's a couple I just found.

December 2000-April 2001: Israeli Investigators Deported After Identifying Two Hijackers
Edit event

According to later German reports, "a whole horde of Israeli counter-terror investigators, posing as students, [follow] the trails of Arab terrorists and their cells in the United States.... In the town of Hollywood, Florida, they [identify]... Atta and Marwan Alshehhi as possible terrorists. Agents [live] in the vicinity of the apartment of the two seemingly normal flight school students, observing them around the clock." Supposedly, around April, the Israeli agents are discovered and deported, terminating the investigation. [Der Spiegel (Hamburg), 10/1/2002]

In August 2001, mere weeks before the greatest mass murder of civilians in U.S. history, the Justice Department squelched two prescient efforts to avert the attacks. In Minneapolis, FBI agents frantically sought permission to search the possessions of one Zacarias Moussaoui, a bumbling, suspicious flight student and a colleague of Islamic fundamentalists. In New York, another FBI agent no less frantically sought clearance to throw his squad into an 11th-hour search for Khalid Almihdar, an al-Qaida operative at large in the country.
