No... but sometimes I check out music people recommend.

/Except when they're being elitist douchebags by selecting bands/music NOBODY has ever heard of... or even likes... just to be an elitist douchebag.

No. I get lots of new music by listening to Pandora, WMTU (online) and the local jazz station.

I'm not sure what the question in the headline has to do with anything. I only care what others are listening to if it's something cool that I don't know about yet.

This Onion article pretty much sums up how I feel about music these days.

Actually, I care very much. I don't listen to the radio, I don't watch MTV, and while I do use Pandora, the best new music I discover is through my friends.

/Paging Agent Orange Drink . . . ;)

I don't care what others are listening to by way of some crappy banner above my browser or some garbage like that, but I certainly listen to what friends have to say about new tunes. Heck, even belong to a few groups specifically dedicated to finding new tunes, or old tunes that I missed.

Pretty much, when you listen to radio with a host who picks out tunes, that's what you're doing. Bob Dylan's themed show has some great tunes--some of which I've got, but often, they're stuff I've missed. Alice Cooper does the same thing with his radio show, so when you get people who you actually know and like pushing stuff on you, why wouldn't you take a listen?

That is if you weren't a total music snob who clings to the belief that everyone else in the world is an asshat...

BobtheFascist 2008-04-24 01:51:53 PM
Music is one of the few area's I'm very open minded about. I'll give damn near anything a try. Like anyone, I have a few hated artists. I'm far less apt to listen to anything recommeded by a pretencious music snob though. Depending on their level of snobbishness, I may be forced to listen to Nickelback infront of them. Maybe airguitar to some John Mayer. You know, just to piss them off.

i haven't listened to the radio in a long time (my car radio crapped out) so teh internets are how i find new shiat. even though it's kinda cheesy, sometimes i'll hear a song on a commercial and then check it out

I bought Harry Nillsson, Radiohead,The Flaming Lips, and the Reverend Horton Heat, all based on TF'er recommendations.

Maybe I just bought sucky albums by these guys, but whatever. Those TF'ers were all wrong.

Nothin' cheesy about that! I was actually wondering... in their data, how they'd classify it if you hear a song in a commercial and then go look it up on youtube to find out who it is.

... eventually, you'll be able to purchase downloads any time, any place you hear a song. You'll hear it... you'll click "WANT" and then it'll be in your library forever and ever.

I don't care what other people are listening to so much, but I love to discover new music. I've got odd tastes though so I generally find stuff through exploration and stuff like last.fm, yahoo music, and Pandora more than through recommendations.

After a lot of browsing around, I've found a few bloggers who regularly turn me on to new and interesting music.

I do use people to discover new music, otherwise I would stay in my own comfy box.

HOWEVER

I hate, hate, hate unsolicited links, mp3s or CDs of what I *should* listen to.

I don't force my choices on anyone else, I expect the same in return

That's how I started listening to Sara Bareilles. I like her voice.

Oddly enough the methods of discovering new music are:

1) Find someone that I don't like but have to tolerate for political reasons (ie I have to work with them or our wives/girlfriends are close)

2) Find out what music that they are into.

3) Buy it myself and listen to it.

The fact that this article appears on a website called "Kings of A&R" and ends with this gem:

Of course, we believe the internet needs to be cleaned up. To much flow of information and amateur content makes it impossible for the the human mind to sift through the options. Our minds are built to organize and we need a better system that organizes. It's time for a spring cleaning....

...tells you all you need to know. It's spin from the scumbags who have run the music industry around.

FTFA:
"The first is that people don't seek to discover new music - it just happens. They don't listen to the radio, watch TV or talk to friends for the purpose of discovering new music.

I call bullshiat, based on my personal experience on TF. There are regularly threads where people talk about the new music they're listening to, I've even started a couple. I've found quite a number of bands from these threads, bands like Muse, shortly after Absolution came out, Budos Band, and TV on the Radio.

So, yeah, people do "seek out new music" and some of them care what other people are listening to.

I picked up "California Soul" by Marlena Shaw after hearing it on that damn Dockers ad.

I don't care what other people listen to but I love discovering new music. Guitar Hero and Rock Band have helped me find some stuff I never would have listened to otherwise. And Pandora is an excellent way to find new stuff too. And I'm old.

Haven't really been keeping up then have you?

There's a LOT of great music out there, that isn't Screamo or the like. Not necessarily a lot of it is getting the mainstream radio, but there are certainly enough alternatives out there.

This is a statement that is often made, because someone is just tired of looking for new stuff, and the trial and error method--so it's easier to insulate oneself to the belief that no one is doing anything good, as opposed to admitting that you've just gotten lazy.

Then again, that post was more of a troll, but still, the sentiment exists...

People's opinions mean less than nothing to me. Usually, mixi's music recommendations tend to be fairly accurate, but I'd really rather just decide for myself.

I also personally think that YouTube can be a good method, assuming more artists embrace it as a viable visual medium.

/though alternative distribution methods are always encouraged...

If you like Zeppelin and Floyd, there's been a shiat ton of new music coming out in the last few years that should put a smile on your face. Granted, it'll be filtered through the minds of youngins like me who grew up on "grunge" but damn it, we're tryin!

Some examples:
The Black Angels - Austin, TX dirty drone rock, about to release their second album.

Heavy Hands - NY, NY Zeppelin/Sabbath influeced blues rock... nothing released yet.

Doonavetter ... this is my band, thus offering you the opportunity to point and laugh!

Yes! (for reference: Loop, Spacemen 3, Velvet Underground, etc.)

radio certainly sucks, but certainly as an internet user you are aware of other avenues of finding new music. I imagine listening to the same dozen or so classic rocks tracks gets pretty tedious after a while...

I'm thinking of driving to toledo or michigan to catch them next month. They're just that good.

I've done that a few times--the first time was the Mitsubishi commercial that played Overseer's "Horndog". Another good source is sports montages on TV (they're good because a lot of the time they'll identify the song and artist) Generally if it catches my ear I'll listen to it, but recently I was talked into loading iPod Shuffles for my co-worker's two kids. Of course they like all the current pop stuff so just for the hell of it I listened to some of it because I don't listen to radio. Talk about a vortex of suck. I wanted to put a hit out on Rihanna because that stupid "Umbrella" song got stuck in my head and NOTHING would get it out. Instead I put a couple of Rammstein songs on the Shuffles just as a joke. Here comes the fark--the kids LOVED the Rammstein songs, so I reloaded the Shuffles with Rammstein's catalog and per their mother they are totally rocking out.

/kids are nine and eleven
//feuer frei!

The crappier someone's taste in music, the louder they seem to be in recommending whatever crap they happen to be listening to at any given moment.

No, I don't want to hear your embedded MP3s on your webpage set to autoplay when the site loads. No, I don't want to enjoy your ringtone while I wait for you to answer your phone. Go away.

This is a great example of how I really find out about new bands. I already dig the Black Keys, but I've never heard of Mr. Airplane Man. Now I will check them out.

Also I really like going to a bands myspace page... and clicking on the bands at the top of their friends list. Perhaps they're there because they're similar, or maybe they're actually real life friends... but it's a roll of the dice, and you never know if it's gonna be a major label act or some dude in a bedroom.

Weblogs have been my recommendation system lately. On my days off I like to go out and grab a bunch of stuff I've never heard of. Sometimes it's new releases, sometimes pre-WWII, sometimes Power Pop, Indiepop, out-of-print 1990s Indie Rock 7"s... whatever you like, somebody's writing about it.

SockMonkeyHolocaust 2008-04-24 04:59:59 PM
Not really. I have an emusic sub so I get most of my stuff from that. I don't really bother posting in music rec threads any more because I don't want to tell you if you like hte Pixies, you'll like... or if you like Radiohead, you'll like... because they are pedestrian and uninteresting to me.

A lot of you are dead set on inflicting your terrible music choices on people and it's just annoying.

You can't inflict music on someone. If they don't like it, they can just turn it off. Well, unless you're Noriega and you're holed up in a nunnery.

I'll give any band a fair try, then anger you with an accurate and well thought out reason they suck.

To be honest i've discovered alot of bands i now like through friends, so i'm not unwilling to accept new music like some people are, but you better be ready to hear exactly why something is bad explained to you over a couple hours if you tell me to check out crap.
