eh, new song isn't all that great. Though, apparently something is coming in less than 2 weeks...

For every shiat I take trent reznor releases a new song. Coincidence?

Whatthefark 2008-04-23 04:40:19 PM
I hate remixes. They are one of the scourges taking down modern music.

Damn, once he starts he just can't stop himself.

now that he's clean, he's making up for all of those "5 years between albums" since 89.

That new song sucks ass.

I am working on a remix album and so I whole heartedly disagree. And no, it's not a dance remix, or a pop-remix, or the exact same song with a different beat...

Taking a song's principle elements and reoganizing or synthesizing them to create a new song which reflects new meaning on the original material is indeed a good creative indevor IMO. And I very much enjoy making and hearing such remixes.

carmody: Radiohead > NIN

Radiohead is now, sadly, a good band but not a great band. The same can be said for NIN. Reznor wins because of what he's doing with his business and for his crazy ass hardcore fans.

assegai [TotalFark] 2008-04-23 05:32:13 PM
I have a bunch of radiohead albums and try to listen to their music but Tom yorke is one of the most depressing vocalists of all time. I can't get into it...I can't. I tried, I can't.

misterhowl 2008-04-23 05:37:31 PM
Agreed, assegai, I want Tom to belt out the big notes like he did on the first couple records. Now he just kind of whimpers and whines. Despite that, the band is pretty damn good - although I don't find myself listening to them all that much.

Nice response. I did love that album.

I love remixes. I love UK singles for pop and rock acts who get the underground producers to rip up their songs. From the days when the KLF and Orb would show up on everyone's single to Aphex Twin mania and now Burial. Early on you'd buy 12"s just for the remixes because it could trip you on to someone else's music. All of that is gone now, as is taking trips to a record store and paying $6 for 50-60 minutes worth of damn good music. I'm sure every Depeche Mode fan is in agreement with me on this one.

If your doing it as a hobby, that's one thing. When bands and record producers do it to make more money off an already released song, that's just lazy.

danduran 2008-04-23 05:48:32 PM
I don't understand how this is showing anyone how to do anything - all it is, is releasing material for free on the internet. People have been doing it for ten years about.

What the author really means when he says "succeeding in and understanding how to use the Internet at its full strength" that's all he means, right?

I've always thought it was retarded and an obvious cash-in to release an album track as a remix for the single. It almost never lives up to the original version and most anyone who bought the album due to the single will be put off by the album version.

Never been that big of a fan of remixes. Too often they, well, sound like remixes. They rarely sound like they could stand alone.

I disagree! Check out the album Millzners posted. Nice place to start.

Remixes were simply made to get songs played in places they otherwise wouldn't. If you didn't care for them you could easily avoid them and listen to the radio and buy the 7". The 12"s were strictly for the fanatics.

It really depends on the type of music you prefer most. As I listen to almost nothing but electronic music...well, I like remixes.

You're listening to the wrong remixes.

That's all done online now. It's ok to go to Myspace Music and check out what's over there. Seriously.

I'm kinda neutral on the song, but I certainly like the idea. It's cool to see somebody pushing things a bit in the current music marketplace.

I'm going to guess that Trent Reznor doesn't really give a crap about what Radiohead does and vice versa.

RabidSquirrel 2008-04-24 12:34:00 AM
First, as a NIN fan, I love this free music idea, though I admit I paid money for Ghosts. I'll shell out the bucks when it's worth it, and besides, I like to support a good idea.

Second, I generally agree that most remixes suck. This is certainly true for 99% of the remixes of NIN's work, not even from outside sources but even (and often especially) the stuff commercially released by NIN. Yearzeroremixed was pretty good, though, and I'd argue it's because he went to a pretty eclectic crew of people to take a stab at it, rather than having the same in-house electrodroning you typically see on his remixes.

All this to say: yay?

This. I haven't even listened to Ghosts yet, actually. I have a banker's box full of CDs in my office -- that's just my backlog. I'm also buying stuff on AmieStreet. Wayyyyy too much music.

Second, I generally agree that most remixes suck.

I agree that in the broad sense, they suck. But then, so does the original music. Just as good music is a small subset of all music, so too are good remixes a subset of all remixes. I tend to find the best remix work in industrial music.

I like In Rainbows, but it's nothing Radiohead hasn't been doing since Kid A (or OK Computer, for that matter).

I'm only disappointed that Year Zero hasn't yielded any remixes from Coil (for obvious reasons) or Meat Beat Manifesto. That album seemed like it would have some interesting remixes, but looking at the Year Zero tracklist, it looks like a bulk of them would be oontz-oontz-oontz dance remixes.

Dubwise [TotalFark] 2008-04-24 09:08:31 AM
Gus Gus released a single YEARS ago that had a free remix kit along with the samples used in the original song. MOBY also had a remix competition a LONG time ago...oh and Bjork...I'm sure the list goes on and on....

That is exactly why I'm doing remixes: I'm trying to get my work introduced to people whom I wouldn't have access to. For example my current album is of a Funk/HipHop band out of New Orleans -- and I'm in PA. So basically now I can spread some tunes around to people who are only listening to me b/c they like the band I'm remixing...

Things like Myspace just don't narrow it down enough like packaging your work with another artist's who has an audience you'd like to tap.

How about some more non-Garageband files, you know, for the 80% of people who don't own a Mac.
