Several of those covers bring me back. It's amazing how things change.

I put Swordfishtrombones on in the office the other day and none of the hipster 20-somethings had a clue who Tom Waits was.

Still, after I clued them in on the name, they all quietly Wikied him and than acted like they were big fans all along.

/yeah. yeah. I know you already know. Sure.

//FYI: Bob Marley was the guy who was too fundamentalist to have a cancerous toe operated on.

Laura Dern and Lisa Bonet were, and I'm guessing Dern still is, quite fappable. Revealing covers of them are quite acceptable.

I found the cover with that Flying Tomato snowboarder kid quite disturbing.

I've been a subscriber for 30 years and still have most of them in my basement; I even have the John Lennon, Jerry Garcia and Kurt Cobain death issues framed and on my office wall - and while it clearly should be there with them, the Bob issue is not. On the bright side, it's nice to see how things have really turned around in Kosovo since Jar Jar's big debut! What...? Oh, never mind.

When was Rolling Stone ever about music? Of course Marley's death notice was an afterthought. Marley's fans and the advertiser's markets never crossed anyway.

Twenty years from now--how many artists will assemble together to do Nickelback tribute records?

How many bands will do Creed covers?

In the meantime, look at Tom Waits.
If you question his greatness and profound influence you are an ignorant mongrel.

He is very highly covered and copied.
Not just his specific songs but his style and themes as well.

The teenie booper boys are out in strength today, huh? Tom Waits sucks, Duane Allman wasn't among the best guitarists when he was alive, and Rolling Stone wasn't influential musically or culturally. You kiddies are so clueless and uninformed it's kinda funny. Hard as it may be to believe, there were some consequential people and events before Kurt Cobain ate a gun.

Tom then said: If you want to drink with me, grow some hair on your balls

Alright, cool guy... I'll take the bait; Allman wouldn't have been my pick either, but who would yours be? You can't just toss those couple of lines out there without backing it up with something, since you seem to have very strong feelings regarding the matter. You're making all of the little furry vikings sad.

I strongly agree that he should have been on the list. And to correct myself he was number two not number one. Jimi Hendrix was number one, something I also don't agree with. My pick would be Clapton. I would have also liked to see Page higher in the list, if not just for his ability to play the guitar, but also what he brought to the studio and to sound engineering and recording. I would have never put Joan Jett on the list.

Artist that deserve a higher ranking then Allman and Hendrix include: Clapton, Rhodes, Fripp, Page, Blackmore, and Iommi . I could make a better argument if I was really concerned about you or your point, but I'm not.

Rolling stone did call him the New Slowhand. That was such an abomination I cant even think of a metaphor that can accurately explain the full extent of my rage.

While a great guitar player, not what one would consider a classic rock guitarist. If we are going to any genre then Satch and Buckethead can't be touched.

Joe Satriani may be the most talented person to pick up a guitar. Not the fastest or the most technical but is neigh untouchable when it comes to combining speed, technique and emotion.

/we need emotional content

My least favorite RS cover was of a scantily-clad Jessica Simpson grinning like an idiot...
...just after Elliott Smith died.
Any residual respect I had for the mag evaporated when I saw that cover.

Cash, Lennon and Davis were legends. Every one knows them. Waits, not so much. He's a B-grade artist, good but not legendary.

Steve Vai can touch them. You like emotions in your shred guitar music? Steve is the go-to guy.

Theres some live album around that has Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, and Y. Malmsteen together...it's pretty overwhelming.

I just about threw up when I saw that the issue after Rick Danko died had the Backstreet Boys on the cover.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=nJXc0NRCmRQ&feature=related

Rick was an amazing singer, inspiring bass player (to me, at least), and a really, really cool guy.

If I were running the world, that guy would have had TWO Rolling Stone covers after he died.

Love,
-Peter
