Gimme Shelter is a hell of a film. The Maysles brothers are outstanding.

FTFA: Barger insists that while Tolkin was hired to work on the series, he was subsequently left out.

Uh, yeah, no shiat Sonny, you're a 60 year old, borderline gangster biker who smokes through a hole in his neck...I wouldn't hire you to work as a garbageman, much less a film advisor.

STFU.

Sonny, while a reprehensible human being, has led a colorful life, and it would make a pretty good series. But cutting him out may not be the best move. And why is this on the music page? I wouldn't agree that he's best known for Altamont, but even if that's true, music had nothing to do with his notoriety. And if you included him in the series, you could have the character speak through a cancer kazoo for comic relief.

He ain't no cop, he ain't never gonna pretend to be a cop, and this farking Mick Jagger put it all on the Angels.

Hunter got stomped, but if you read the book, you know Hunter also had respect for their lifestyle choices and brotherhood.

One of my former coworkers was in Laughlin, NV during the whole Hell's Angels vs. Mongols incident (2002). When she got back into town, I was full of questions.

and I love how Martin from the Jefferson Airplane gets his ass kicked, then the Rolling Stones look pretty terrified up there... only Keith shows some kind of balls and addresses the audience...
you can just FEEL the bad vibes...

The real loser from Altamont was chickenshiat Jerry Garcia, hiding and shaking inside his trailer afraid to go on stage. Part of the reason the festival got so carried away was because of the huge gap in the musical program where the Dead were supposed to be playing but didn't.

/GD=most overrated band evar!

So, so wrong. The Stones waited until the sun went down so the lighting was right for the film. The Dead said from the beginning that the Angels shouldn't be in charge of security for anything. They had seen what they did at Mario Savio's Free Speech Movement rally at Berkeley.

Stones are the most overrated band of all time.

Haters suck, even Zappa fans.

I wouldnt use the word respect. I think he was shocked they could still "hold it together" and live... but he sure didnt respect them..

I mean-he betrayed them... thats not very respectful. He may have respected there ability use drugs that much-and still function...lol

Yes he was cleared. Hunter pulled out an empty gun-and was stabbed. BUT YOU CANT TELL ME THE ANGELS(who only have white members) didnt go after hunter. He was scared enough to pull a gun...an empty one.

PPL STOP DEFENDING THE ANGELS...they arent good ppl. They have done terrible things. THAT THEY ADMITTED TO...

THINGS LIKE DRUG DEALING, RAPE, MURDER, LYNCHING...

Im all cool for a good freaky time... but you farkers wouldnt let sonny barger watch your kids.

They knew from the start that his intention was to write the story. And guns, bikes and drugs were their common ground. But my estimation wasn't that he betrayed them, although they (or Sonny himself) may have used that word, but again, they were assholes. Hunter's honest interpretation of their lot in life due to their choices offended their "code". But I think, and it's just my opinion, but I think Hunter had respect for the outsider stance they took. And their all-for-one approach. He knew the violence was a possibility, and was willing to risk it. Hell, he knew before he went on that particular run that he may get stomped. And which guys would initiate it. At least if you take Hunter at his word. I do, but hyperbole was his friend.

Gonzo forever.

According to teh Wiki, the Dead refused to play after Marty Balin got beat up. The Dead were supposed to play before the Stones, so there was a huge gap in time where there was no music being played and it got the crowd worked up. I read this in an article by someone who was there, unfortunately I cannot find the article online. It detailed Garcia crying like a baby huddled in a trailer until someone finally got him out of there.

theewhiterhino 2008-04-21 04:06:47 PM
Without getting too long-winded here, I'm sure there are plenty of versions of the story, Wiki notwithstanding. But the one I've always heard is as follows: The Stones said they wanted to do a free show in Golden Gate Park. San Fran wouldn't allow it. The logistics went haywire from there. The Dead agreed to play when Bill Graham was organizing it, but the Stones manager took over when the venue changed. They (The Stones) wanted the Angels for security. The Dead had plenty of experience with the Angels, from Kesey's LaHonda days and even playing their chartered boat for an anniversary party. But can you blame The Dead, or if you choose to get personal, Jerry, for not wanting to go out there and straighten out an ugly situation, created by some poor planning and a musician being pummeled for trying to keep the peace? It was The Stones gig, not The Dead's. While I may have heard most of this from the viewpoint of Dead biographers and such, the facts are the facts. The Stones wanted to get in on the free show vibe The Dead had going in San Fran and they blew it.

HE DID NOT FIRE A GUN. there were no bullets in the gun. The angels later made fun of him, saying-why would he pull an empty pistol.

You can only see the gun in one scene, and you can only see it cause hunter is wearing a bright green suit.

J13P 2008-04-21 05:11:18 PM
The angels did "security" for the first acid test at lahonda. Jerry invited them-saying we will give you guys a bunch of beer, get everyone real farked up...but just make sure ppl dont mess up our gear. they did several of these together.(this is cross referenced in MANY books)

Altimont was born because the USA was so furious that the stones would charge FIFTEEN DOLLARS!!!! to go see the stones. While wasted at an interview/press thing...Jagger says- Well we are gonna do a free show at the end of the tour. and it snow balled from there.

NO ONE KNOWS how the angles got there. But when you think about them cutting costs...and doing everything to get the show...IT JUST MAKES SENSE that they were involved through the grateful dead. ESPECIALLY since the whole san fran scene was involved with the show....i mean it follows logically.

THE angels say- they were there to party...we arent cops for jagger.

either way...Gimmie Shelter is a snuff film. Cept merridith hunter didnt die on film..he died in the hospital.

Did you know both spielberg and Lucas were filming on cameras?

I knew Lucas was. And by all accounts from within the Dead organization, they discouraged using the Angels. Keith & Mick were lured in by the image, The Dead knew the deal.
And no acid tests were held at Kesey's LaHonda ranch. They were all in public places, with admission charged. The big event in question was a Merry Pranksters Welcome The Hell's Angels Party chronicled by Tom Wolfe from tape-recordings by Hunter, which included a momentous gang bang of Cassady's girlfriend at the time. But The Dead always had a fear of the Angels on some level, and Jagger himself started that rumor that The Dead suggested the Angels for security in an interview I've seen on video. They claim it's not true. And the Angels were never security for any event held by the Pranksters or The Dead. They knew them better than that after Berkeley, of this I am sure.

You fortunate bastard. Were you inside or out? I was trying to finagle an invite through a friend in Pitkin County, but he didn't have the juice to get more than himself and his wife in. I was going to go there and try to work some magic, but a funeral/memorial just didn't seem like the right time. That said, I've tilted a couple back with Hunter at the Woody Creek Tavern, but he wasn't in a talkative mood. I bought him a drink, shook his hand and palmed a doob of Thee White Rhino to him. I hope he enjoyed it.

Will somebody please explain to the idiots at HBO that pissing off Sonny Barger is really not a good quality of life decision.
