The evanescence of both groups would be greatly appreciated.

When the videos with her come on, I just mute it.

The sound of me fapping to her image is music enough

Wouldn't call myself a fan of Evanescence, but compared to the majority of recent top 40 it stands out as "not quite as terrible".

debug 2008-04-21 01:33:40 PM
She's odd. Sometimes she's quite hot and other times she's just kinda meh. It's like the sienfeld episode with the chick and the bad lighting.

I really like Evanescence and have a big thing for Amy Lee. My girlfriend, unfortunately, hates her and made me take down my framed poster of her.

I could see that as a good thing and I'm rather disappointed to hear it's not going to happen. I like them both, and given how sub-par Metallica's last album was, some new ideas (like a duet with an amazing voice, specifically Amy Lee) could be cool. They both rock when they're good.

Left disappointed.

Has anyone heard the recent acoustic sets Metallica did? James can't sing at all anymore. At all.

If you want to really doubt your metal-loving existence, listen to Metallica rocking out on "I'm Only Happy When It Rains."

I think she's good, but honestly if you have heard her live she sometimes has difficulty with higher registers. Which is fine, they can be hard to hit and considering she has to do it night after night it's understandable.

And Anette isn't bad either. Just different that what most Nightwish fans are/were used to.

I'm a fan of Megadeth and Metallica, but it's easier to keep your integrity when you shoot for streetlamps instead of the moon.

While I enjoy looking at Amy Lee, and her voice is nice in short bursts, I'd rather keep my experience of Evanescence and Metallica seperate.

/Hi, I'm Dave Mustaine. Look how crazy I am! Yep, I sure am crazy. And angry, too. I only sing about these things, forever. That's integrity. Stupid Hetfield, branching out beyond insanity and being really mad about something.

defiancecp 2008-04-21 04:40:25 PM
First, to address the "anyone over 12 seriously listen blah blah" junk, take a listen to Origin, it's actually a pretty good album. Their more-commercial debut, whatever it's called, has some ok stuff. The new one, it's really getting junky, but there are glimmers of hope. But still, my point is, there IS good music out there by evanescence.

Second, the "amy's hot" thing. I'm not saying she's got sharp knees and is below my standards or anything, but she's not "gush about her hotness on a fark thread" hot. Any of the dark symphonic metal bands with chick singers who have been mentioned on this thread beat her out. Both Nightwish singers, Lacuna coil, Within Temptation, Leaves' eyes, etc etc. Compared to them, she's kinda chubby and plain-faced.

And seriously, they ARE better bands. In addition to those already mentioned (Nightwish, Lacuna Coil, etc), I'd also recommend Within Temptation, the Crest, and probably 10 others I've learned about lately that are slipping my terribly absent mind at the moment :P

Third, commercial "copycats" aren't really a bad thing. I'd never heard of any of the above mentioned bands before I heard evanescence, but after hearing them I sought out similar styles and now they're by far my favorite musical style.

+1 on Within Temptation.

I also recommend Sirenia and Angtoria. Not for their hot singers (they're girls, but unremarkable) but for the music.

I'd like to add Marcela Bovio from Stream of Passion/Elfonia to that list. She sounds a bit less like an opera singer, but her voice is absolutely amazing.

WoodyHayes: Tarja Turunen from (the old) Nightwish a try.

When I first heard Nightwish, I thought it was a guy singing in falsetto. She's a very strong singer, but her voice is too thick for my tastes. I don't know if thick makes any sense, but it does to me. I'll take Amy Lee over her for voice alone, but I'll also take Nightwish over Evanescence any day.

Rea1ity56: WTF, Amy Lee is an amazing vocalist. One of the best sounding artists out there if you ask me.

She doesn't have a lot of range IMO, and the vocals from Fallen had a very same-y feel. I liked the album, don't get me wrong, but it was hampered very much by her contribution.

That being said, I also find her pretty plain-looking and I don't get the attention she gets for her appearance. But to each his own, no insult meant.

WoodyHayes: Give Simone Simons from Epica, Floor Jansen from After Forever, or Tarja Turunen from (the old) Nightwish a try.

Seconded. I've never been impressed by After Forever, but Epica and Nightwish (along with Within Temptation, which is poppier and closer to Evanescence) are two of my favorite metal bands.

Some other bands in this style not mentioned above are Edenbridge, The Sins of Thy Beloved, Xandria, Brave, Odes of Ecstasy, Midnattsol, Elis and Erben der Schopfung (Elis' original name).

FunkyColdMedinosaur: Thanks for the Simone pics. She's stunning. Too bad she fell sick before the Epica tour (just saw them last Friday).

picturescrazy: When I first heard Nightwish, I thought it was a guy singing in falsetto. She's a very strong singer, but her voice is too thick for my tastes.

Fair enough. When I first heard them, I didn't like them either. In fact, I saw them live (with the new singer Annette) and still didn't like them. It wasn't until February or so, after about a year of listening to them nonstop in the gym, that they really 'clicked' and I began to appreciate all of their albums. Except Wishmaster, which I finally gave up on and sold off.

I'll agree the sound isn't for everyone, and it's not even immediately accessible for those who might be inclined to enjoy it. But kudos to you for checking them out.

Look into Within Temptation. Much 'thinner' and angelic voice.

WoodyHayes [TotalFark] 2008-04-21 06:00:20 PM
Alright, some other symphonic metal fans!

Rea1ity56: I'll have to check em out

Good for you.

Honestly, the symphonic metal sub-genre took a bit of getting used to on my part. There are generally so many different things going on and the music is a far cry from what you'd normally hear in the States that I had to give most of it a second or third listen before I "got it." You will not be disappointed however, I promise you that much.

FunkyColdMedinosaur: And Anette isn't bad either. Just different that what most Nightwish fans are/were used to.

Right, I like her voice but it is definitely quite a departure from Tarja Turunen's.

I like Annette's previous band as well, Alyson Avenue. It sort of reminds me of Bon Jovi if that makes sense (hopefully that doesn't get me pilloried).

+1 on Within Temptation.

Aye!
