In the debate, Obama said he was also friends with Republican Senator Tom Coburn, who once called for the death penalty for doctors who carry out abortions. "Do I need to apologize for Mr. Coburn's statements?" he said.

heh

Well, in 1969-1973, McCain was sort of "out of touch" with the world too, although in a slightly different way. In fact, if we want to also take HIS statements out of context, he was writing anti-American propaganda during 1968. Shall we violently condemn him for that?

(In 1968, after suffering over a year of intense torture, McCain was forced to write an anti-American propaganda "confession" by his Vietnamese captors. Of course, he is as much to blame for that as Obama is for Ayers' activities during the same period.)

Hobodeluxe [TotalFark] 2008-04-20 09:07:54 PM
Obama's crime here is serving on the board of an anti-poverty organization. Why? Because another person on that board was a Distinguished Professor of Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago, whose philanthropy is shared by his wife's directorship at the Children and Family Justice Center at Northwestern University. These community members hosted what guests call an "unremarkable gathering" where a state Senator identified Obama as her successor. And why is this so wrong? Because when Barack Obama was eight years old and on a completely separate continent, the couple in question engaged in violent radicalism that Obama has repeatedly denounced, rejected, and done other synonyms for denounced and rejected.

To use Stephen Colbert's line of logic:

Barack Obama is a Democrat.
Democrats nominated John Kerry.
John Kerry is friends with John McCain.
John McCain is older than shiat.

Therefore, Barack Obama would be a shiatty president! IT'S RIGHT THERE, PEOPLE!

Well, I guess I can never run for office then, I've met people and been at events with people who support bombing abortion clinics and who believe killing abortionists is justifiable homicide. I don't believe those things, I think it's wrong and immoral, but I guess because I've met people who do, I'm guilty as well.

Oh wait, it only matters when it's a leftist bomber. I guess I'm safe.

Weather Underground were terrorists, that's pretty much beyond denial. But Obama's work alongside Ayers had nothing to do with Ayers' terrorist activity.

Also:

FTFA: McCain said it was "probably" a mistake to solicit Hagee's endorsement, which might help him with evangelical voters, but said he was "glad" to have it nonetheless.

"I said any comments that he made about the Catholic Church I strongly condemn, of course," he said.

But it's not enough to condemn comments like "God damn America," you have to condemn the man who baptized your children. OK, got it.

From the second line in the article:

"...maverick Arizona senator..."

WHY do people keep insisting this, given his policy? And if they truly believe it, why not find a better word than "maverick" which is used ad nauseum? What happened to journalism?

fishsticks 2008-04-20 10:04:12 PM
I just find it interesting that McCain used the phrase "Unrepentant Terrorist", a phrase I associate with Sean Hannity. I don't know if the phrase originated with Hannity or not but I've noticed that he's been involved in this issue, first with the debate question he gave Stephanopolous (sp?), and now this quote if it did originate from him. The effect of the media on politics, and vice versa is a complex thing, and I am musing.

I think I watch too much cable news.

McCain has to take these shots - the only chance he has of winning the Presidency before he starts crapping himself is if HillBill is the Democratic nominee.

If you saw the ABC debate, you know what happened. It got lazy. I've said this before. If not for the internet, Hillary almost certainly would've gotten the nomination.

Gyrfalcon: In 1968, after suffering over a year of intense torture, McCain was forced to write an anti-American propaganda "confession" by his Vietnamese captors.

So then I guess McCain has no problem admitting that torture is unreliable?

He should know that if you stomped on anyone long enough that they'd confess to the most absurd things, right?

Gee, that makes me think that he must be a really outspoken activist in explaining that torture is worthless as an intelligence-gathering tool, right? He must be really critical of water-boarding and stuff, and talks about it all the time, right?

It is good to see that reporters can watch This Week and then write a story. For those of you who did not see this, George made McCain look like an idiot. McCain went on this rant about how if he knew someone was a unrepentant terrorist he would not serve on a board with him and would openly condemn him (like Obama did do BTW). George then ask McCain why he continued his relationship with Hagee considering that he has made comments on Catholics and others and is not repentant for them. McCain said that he condemned the anti-catholic statements, but would not say that he rejects the Hagee endorsement. He then claimed that it was shameful for Obama to compare Tom Coburn to Ayers. Maybe calling for the death of doctors that practice abortions is no big deal to McCain and reason to call someone a humanitarian (which he did about 5 times). To me it is a pretty extremist view. I am farking sick of people calling McCain a centrist. Let's review:

1. Agrees with Coburn that abortion doctors should be given the death penalty.
2. Thinks that the answer to the health care crisis is to abolish the tax incentive for employers to offer group insurance and let everyone go it alone (with a tax rebate).
3. Wants to bomb bomb bomb bomb bomb Iran.
4. Believes that the surge is working.
5. Does not think there is anything wrong with people that earn the majority of their income in the stock market paying half the tax rate of a teacher or fireman.
6. Will not rescind the Bush tax cut.
7. Will add another $100 billion a year on top of our current budget with his tax cuts and lack of spending cuts. He said today that he would still cut taxes even if he could not find the spending decreases he wants.

This guy is a right wing no-tax and spend conservative. He is the worst of Reagan and Bush 2 rolled up in one. Obama is right McCain would not be another 4 years of Bush. It would be worse.
