Does that mean Christians have to respect us now? Fine with me.

So, how much longer before they figure out whom to talk to during sex?

Good use of ironic tag, thank God.

So, when does that whole "tax exemption status" begin then?

I'd get pretty tired of people singing "Imagine there's a heaven" all day long. And patting one another on the back because once again, there's no good news today.

JerseyTim [TotalFark] 2008-04-20 09:48:39 PM
What a crock of shiat. Part of the benefit of knowing there is no such thing as the supernatural is getting to sleep in on Weekends. I'll be damned if I'm going to go listen to lectures and singing instead of watching NFL pregame shows.

I'll just get this in before the flames ignite.

TFA - That, that, is what religion should be about. Members of the local community, actually talking to each other.

This doesn't surprise me. What surprised me were the atheist Catholic priests.

Seriously.

I thought that was the point of Unitarians... all the community and networking without the ridiculous pomp and circumstances.

Church is a great place to meet people. If you're new to a town, church members are often very welcoming.

Also, many church-going women would like to hook up with a decent church-going man, and vice-versa. Depending on their age and the type of church, you'll find that a good percentage of those women are willing to let you see their godly bits before marriage. You can always play the "I'm loosing my faith in God" game. Women like a challenge and will "attempt" to bring you back into the fold. Often with blowjobs.

If you are agnostic, try some of the more laid back churches like the Universal Unitarian or Methodist churches. Unitarian churches can be really hit or miss, though, so shop around.

Be careful of non-denominational churches. I've found that their lack of affiliation allows them to spout out a boatload of crazy since nobody keeps them in check. A *LOT* of them tend to teach Young Earth doctrine. Their congregations are often brain-dead sheep. You can find better elsewhere.

I think this is a great idea. Then when my fundie Mother-in-law comes to visit and wants me to go to church with her on Sunday, I'll bring her along and make her feel extremely uncomfortable for a change!

Maybe then, she'd get the hint...
Or try harder to save me. Whatever.

From the article: "Novak, 54, is a member of the Ethical Humanist Society of Chicago, a religious group that focuses on respecting others and does not worship a deity"

I'm sorry, you fail. If you don't believe in a deity, than you don't belong to a religion.

They completely fail. I'm just an atheist because I'm too lazy to go to church or have faith. If there's a god he'll understand that I don't do mornings, especially Sunday mornings.

Having an church for Atheists is like having a community of hermits.

Devera Witkin and her husband, Michael, moved to New York from San Francisco in 2001. A few years later, Michael was misdiagnosed with terminal lung cancer. Devera Witkin, 65, had always known she was an atheist and she drifted from the Orthodox and Conservative Judaism she was raised with after she moved away from home.

Now, she was searching for a place to spend Yom Kippur, but also for "a rabbi that would help me bury my husband."

They chose to observe Yom Kippur at City Congregation and Witkin cried throughout the service.

"I was thinking it was the last one I'd ever have with my husband," she said, "but I was also crying because I was reading these words and they were so meaningful to me. I never had that experience in a synagogue."

By the time they decided to join City Congregation, Witkin knew her husband didn't have cancer. But they had found other reasons to attend.

W. T. F.

Misdiagnosed with terminal cancer? What a horrible experience for their family to go through!

That is a touching story about her crying at Yom Kippur though.

The article actually leaves me warm and fuzzy. The headline doesn't completely give the article justice: it's about people of any creed or even no creed coming together to actually just be human beings.

I like religion because it makes me really appreciate being an atheist. If it wasn't for religion, atheism would have no value.

JerseyTim: Part of the benefit of knowing there is no such thing as the supernatural is getting to sleep in on Weekends.

Exactly. I used to LOATHE getting up early every Sunday to go to church..and I was raised Mormon, it was a three hour affair at the minimum. Weekends improved drastically once I finally refused to go anymore. Now I get up sometime after noon and drink beer in the shower on Sunday mornings. All in all, I find it a much more fulfilling experience.

I keep meaning to go to UU services. I'm an Atheist, but I do like the sense of community. I grew up Unitarian but haven't actually been there for services for years. If only it wasn't on Sunday mornings. In the past I've joined choral singing groups that sing Christian hymns because I like the music. Maybe someone at the UU Church could tell me why my jade plant is dying.

From wikipedia

"The English word religion is in use since the 13th century, loaned from Anglo-French religiun (11th century), ultimately from the Latin religio, "reverence for God or the gods, careful pondering of divine things, piety, the res divinae".[4]"

Not exactly what is being described in the article. Perhaps a better word is needed. (or a better wiki)
