You know, if you want smoke, they make machines for that sort of thing.

We tell you to ban smoking in bars and clubs. Do you listen? No. And look what happens.

Thank God nothing like that can happen here in America.

"There were people with extinguishers but they weren't able to put out the flames,"

If it's bigger than a bin fire, and one or maybe two extinguishers don't knock the fire down, get the Fark out of there, pronto!

They probably would have, but...

"Quito Fire Chief Jaime Benalcazar told The Associated Press..[snip]..the exit doors were closed and padlocked," he said. People were trapped inside."

Dude! They have CSI (possibly Miami/Vegas?) in Ecuador?

You didn't know that rock-n-roll burned
So you bought a candle
And you lived and you learned

I think most of you are missing the point here. People may have died, yes, but at least they didn't go out hearing "Here I go again"...or maybe they did...

I took a seminar last month on safety, the fire training was scary as shiat. The lab results of the Great White fire were unsettling, to say the least. Figure about 1 minute, 30 seconds until the entire place was ablaze with a lousy building design that turned into a true death trap.

Lab experiment showing test conditions. The results were truly frightening.

One would think such a thing would never happen again in life (shivers)

And yet the Great White fire was only about 60 years after another local fire: Cocoanut Grove.

However, Cocoanut Grove did cause some nationwide policy changes, such as requiring doors to open outward into the street.

Re-read the article & stupidly missed that bit. What the ever-loving Fark possesses this kind of mentality? Cost saving? Jeebus it makes me mad.

The owners & managers deserve to go to jail got a long, long time. Ba$tards...

This happens all the time, you just don't always hear about it. My father was a Deputy chief in the FDNY. He used to deal with nightclub fires a lot. One was on the second floor, someone set a fire on the stairs. I can't remember how many died. And yes Law & Order did a show like that.

I was wondering the same thing. Why the hell do you padlock the doors?! Isn't that by itself a safety violation that could get you shut down? Then it dawned on me: Satanic Ritual. Those people were supposed to die so that the owners could gain immortality from their Lord Satan!

Man, you would think that at this point, they'd be twice shy about this sort of thing.

/can't believe that hasn't been said yet.

The "Happy Land" fire:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Happy_Land_Fire

It's the second worst case of mass murder in NYC history (second only to... well, you know.) I can't believe the guy is eligible for parole in 7 years.

Of course being Latin America no safety guidelines were followed.

You know the fire chief, or anyone never inspected the premises.

And then you have jackasses with no common sense setting off fireworks.

When I lived in Colombia the same kind of stuff happened all the time.

It is a shame, and being latin I can say this. There is not a lot of common sense south of the border.

Aton there is looking like some sort of Used Car Dealer of the Damned with that jacket and ponch. Kinda looks like he's been hitting the Broodwich's pretty hard lately.

Quick, someone sue the radio station, the beer company, and the hardware store for criminal negligence!

And the award for Best Pyrotechnic Display goes to...

/maybe we should drop that category

What makes me nuts about most of the abovementioned fires is most of the people responsible end up getting off with a slap on the wrist. Or at most, 2-3 years in jail.

Not when the nightclub is 9200 ft above sea level! Temps in the 40s and 50s every night of the year.

Still warmer than a nightclub in Antartica that's 9200 feet above sea level.
