sure sure, but I doubt interpreters are at risk of severe injury. Unless there's some common way of losing limbs whilst interpreting.

"Signing" trifecta in play now??

jaxdahl 2008-04-19 10:16:25 PM
Oh, I believe it. My college interpreters had to walk around campus quite a bit -- when it was icy, they had problems navigating the sidewalks safely, one ended up with a cast and crutches.

Of course the deaf are at higher risk of injuries. They keep making all those gang hand signs!

WHAT?

tasteme 2008-04-19 10:35:26 PM

here you go Xxplosiv:

"The impact of repetitive stress in industrial and office settings has been well documented, but there is less data on the risk of ergonomic injury to sign language interpreters," says Matthew Marshall, associate professor of industrial and systems engineering at RIT and a leader of the research group. "Our findings indicate that interpreters may actually be at a higher risk of injury than other professions."

keep these steps in mind Xxplosiv

1. think
2. type reasonable reponse
3. not get called a dumbass

Yes, it's miss South Carolina, but she have her own category.

Sounds like the perfect woman to me. Beautiful and unable to talk.

jjorsett 2008-04-19 10:43:54 PM
As I interpret Xxplosiv's post, s/he was pointing out that if you, tasteme, were deaf, you'd also end up with repetitive motion injury because you'd have to use sign language. So you'd be deaf and RMIed, a double whammy.

I'd buy it.

Interpreted a Def Leppard/Journey concert for three Deaf men August 2006. Marcus Amphitheatre, Milwaukee, WI. The venue's idea of Handicapped Seating for the Deaf was an aisle seat halfway up the First Section, an obstructed view 30 feet away from my platform and stand. No dice. They complained. I complained. They were moved to front row seats way off Stage Left, still obstructed and practically backstage. I had to reposition in the gangwalk between the audience and the stage, right next to electrical and sound equipment, barely a person's length wide. Roadies running all around me. Cords snaking round my feet. Mr. Poseur Steve Perry dripping glam-star sweat on my hair. Couldn't even take a break during intermission 'cause the men demanded I talk to the venue manager about changing seats again (they couldn't watch the show and my signing at the same time). No dice there, either. Def Leppard brought crazed fans rushing the stage & a set list that betrayed me last-minute. When the show was over the venue manager and I went back into the seating and chose a much better, safer placement for both Deaf and Interpreter for future shows (just off downstage right, at a jutting corner/lighting tower).
Hope they decided to use it.

I'm "only" 25 and I still say +1 for the headline. That kind of funny should be referenced, old or not.

/they ended up doing it about 15 times... but the first few times were really great, and then Chevy started trying to throw Garrett off which was kind of weird

I'm a sign language interpreter, so I'm getting a kick out of these replies.

ironic_followup: sure sure, but I doubt interpreters are at risk of severe injury. Unless there's some common way of losing limbs whilst interpreting.

I WOULD IMAGINE THAT REPETITIVE STRESS INJURIES FROM SIGNING WOULD BE THE MOST COMMON CAUSE OF INJURY AMONG INTERPRETERS FOR THE DEAF.

Workemon 2008-04-19 11:03:49 PM
Thisa really no joke. My wife was going to school for sign language at one of the better schools in the nation. She injured her arm at her part time job (torn muscle in her forearm) and it never healed right because she was constantly signing. She had to quit and change her major... to Business...

/She was gonna be my sugar momma.

you are correct on that interpretation, his Boobies sounded like he could choose to be either deaf or have repetitive motion injury, when in fact those who are deaf are more likely to get the rmi based on information from the article.

AlwaysOnStage: I know that there are varying degrees of deafness and that even a completely deaf person can still feel the sound waves. I also know that a deaf person can enjoy watching a show too. But I still have to ask: why would three deaf guys want to go to a concert? Were you signing the lyrics and stuff?

Also, why would they need or deserve any better view than non-deaf people?

What reason, ever, could there be for 'a bunch of deaf people' to see a concert live? To feel like they are not horribly crippled? If you are so 'deaf' that you need an interpreter to 'tell you what is going on' at a rock concert you should give it up. Just go to the bowling alley. Pretending is fun, but you're pathetic.

I have a good bit of respect for hearing impared people, and for the translators. But honest to god, taking a deaf person to a concert is like taking a blind man to an art exibit.

This is because all deaf people are whack-jobs (they want to jam a stick in their own children's ears so they can join in the Deaf Culture) and are prone to violent outbursts again those of us with normal hearing? Right? Right?

Felt the exact same way.
Asked one of the guys what the deal was. He said he was hearing until he was 15 when he lost his hearing in an accident. Was a big fan of Journey and Def Leppard as a kid and always sees them when they come into town. He said between seeing the band, feeling the vibrations, and watching my signs, he gets the full experience.

There are different levels and categories of being Deaf. And sometimes concerts are less about the music and more about the performance.

/peace

One of the more surreal concerts I've been to was KISS. We got to our seats, and noticed some type of seat in front and facing us, with a light shining down on the seat. When KISS came on, this lady gets up on the seat and starts SIGNING the concert to our section. You've never seen comedy until you've seen someone trying to sign the lyrics to "Love Gun"...

I had an apartment near RIT, and some deaf neighbors, one next door. Her orgasms, clearly audible through the walls, were hilarious. Whale song, if whales were tone-deaf. That is all.
