kkoch499: and can't he just kill him now?

Guess you didn't read the article, this took place in Sri Lanka.

and even then,

His father, perhaps the only one who might have cleared up the confusion, never came. He died in 1981, 23 years after James' arrest for his murder. The uncle who occasionally visited died 15 years ago.

Well, to be fair, this happened in Sri Lanka.

It's not like you could be locked away without charge or trial in THIS country...

How terrible. At least they didn't make him wear an iron mask.

PS. $5000 in compensation for 50 years? Damn. That's $100 a year.

Agree - now for the rest of his life, the rest of us will have to hear him whine about "injustice." Better for him to have simply moved on to a better place.

Nope. That movies whole premise was bullshiat. You can't be tried for the same crime in criminal court yes. But the act of murder you were tried for and the new act of murder are separate crimes. It doesn't matter that it is for killing the same person.

Makes you wonder how he was convicted in the first place.

Murgus618 2008-04-19 08:39:48 PM
Wow....talk about taking a little responsibilty. That last sentance........

For now, he just wants to spend his last years in peace, working the fields, this time as a free man.

He says he is not bitter, that half a century in jail was simply his fate. He doesn't blame the government, the hospital or even his father for his ordeal. In the end, he says, he has only himself to blame.

"I should have fought harder to get myself out," he said.

Makes you wonder how people can read an article and miss where it says he never stood trial and was never convicted.

Bertsura Oh goodie, death penalty thread! Obviously, this proves that all people convicted of murder committed the crime!

Nonsense. Everybody knows it's the fact that our legal system is 100% infallible that makes the death penalty right and proper, without opportunity to appeal.

I had this discussion once, with a guy who said he didn't care if the death penalty had a 50% error rate (executing the non-guilty), because he was convinced it had a deterrent effect. Never mind that it has the reverse effect.

Nice Trolling!

Obviously you jerk your meat way to much.
You should get out in the world and notice most of the legal system is Democratic and leans toward Liberal. I just look a few miles West at St Clair County (in Southern Illinois). John Edwards and his class of lawyers can make in the millions here. And I see very few of these lawyers being "GOPer"s
