Technically if statistics back up the claim, then it no longer becomes "truthiness", but truth.

Um, so why is Obama not taking advantage of this opportunity before the PA vote? It couldn't hurt and would likely help him

Colbert was in Philly all last week, and acually had both Obama and Hillary on. Problem is Hillary was on the show and Obama was via sattelite, which I found strange. I know about the "bump", and was very upset about Hillary being on. I only hope it doesn't sway the PA voters....

...it was no coincidence that he was the final "surprise" guest (new window) on Thursday night's show.

I've been wondering if Hillary was aware that Obama was going to be on after her. I guess we'll never know. But I preferred his satellite phone in to her lame attempts at acting on a new comedy program. I'm actually kind of surprised presidential candidates legitimize The Daily Show and Colbert Report like this. And Colbert Report is the fake one of the two, why are they going on that show and not TDS? Not that I care, I prefer the Colbert Report these days.

Obama is appearing on Jon Stewarts show sometime soon isn't he? I wonder if there is a Stewart "bump" and if it contraindicts Colbert's "bump."

mctom 2008-04-19 09:21:00 PM
I think Obama definitely won the 'bump' for Thursday night.. Hillary seemed to get mocked in her bit-- it was too short, too stiff, and corny. I got the impression that they invited her on, and she didn't want to do an interview or a long bit or anything (essentially blowing them off-- wanting a quick spot to look cool), and so they decided to make fun of her and have her do something silly-- fix the TV (get it? she likes to fix things!) and make a crack about calling her at 3am.
Obama, on the other hand, plays into the show- bringing out the On Notice Board (and a great line: "We can't remove Grizzly Bears, they are the #1 threat to America") and came across quite well.
Of course, it doesn't hurt that he followed that great Ed-Words bit...

moriarty23 2008-04-19 09:24:32 PM
I've understood the Colbert bump as a reaction between the viewer and their television, not some magic gained from being in Stephen's presence. Everyone was on Colbert. What are these people trying to measure? I guess you could have Colbert record a show with Ross Perot, but not show it to anyone or even tell anyone that you have done so and match that against opinion polls.
I bet Stephen's presence IS magical.

Also, Hillary was on TDS before Ohio (via satellite).

You can tell that Colbert and Stewart prefer Obama. Their live audiences reflect it as well. I was so happy to see the On Notice board though. It has been a long time. Too bad James Brady didn't go to the Dead To Me board. Hillary's bit was just lame, and I think it just served the purpose of making the joke about it later. Edwards had a truly hilarious segment, and it tied into the show so naturally. It was a refreshing sight after the debate. I thought Obama wasn't going to be on at all since his wife was on the day before, and it would have been a mistake to forgo the Colbert bump in PA. I want a President who is intelligent enough to recognize the importance of Stephen Colbert (and possibly name a bridge after him).

The_Brain 2008-04-19 10:19:34 PM
a University of Pennsylvania statistical study of the 2004 presidential race showed a very significant 'Oprah Bump' after candidates appeared on her show. simply put, you can't beat that kind of exposure.

I thought the whole show was hilarious. Great fun, and it was terrific of Clinton, Edwards, and Obama to partake. Damn good television, in my opinion.

RatOmeter 2008-04-19 10:47:18 PM
The reactions are all too likely to be true... to the entertainment generation. I figure "Generation X" and all subsequent apply, though the world has consistently harbored people too stupid and/or unwilling to think for themselves since there were people to think, stupidly.

/Sheesh, the sheep I see every day.

Stewart is both funnier AND more influential than Stephen. Don't get me wrong, Steve-O is pretty good, and his fans are rabid, but Stewart has the subtle comedy that most farkers just don't get.

I love Stewart, but his show is much more biased than Colbert. He doesn't really care, but Colbert is better for the mass-appeal thing.

Seriously, I like Stephen more because he's better at impromptu, and his interviews are much less tedious than Stewart's

Lately all I see Stewart do is look at the camera and make "funny" voices. I liked it when Colbert and Carrell were both on TDS.

Does anyone else ever see TDS and think "Tater Day Saints"? Just curious.
