Yeah, I guess it IS harder more difficult to get laid as you get older, so anything that will lend a helping hand....

I became a priest. I took my elf hunter up to level 57, but then one day started a new character - a human priest - and just kept working him up. He's now a level 69 with shadow ability.

I went to Catholic schools when I was younger, and let me say, these guys have it pretty easy. Everything they need is pretty much paid for by the church. The priest at my grade school drove a farking BMW.

Mid-life crisis. The awareness that there are fewer days ahead than behind.

No surprises here.

(Maybe even the hope that you will be able to magically suppress those terrible and unnatural urges so you can pass the go-to-heaven test?)

My boyfriend's dad did this. Apparently one day he came home and decided he wanted to go to seminary. He was then informed by a minister friend that before he could become a preacher he had to join a church first.

Of course, he worked for the state as a chemist on Love Canal, so I could see how that would get to you after a point.

I have no interest in becoming a priest. Porn star, yes, but not a priest.

So, the church used to be a hide-out for those in the closet and pedos.... but now it's a cop-out for midlife crisis guys with no hope?

Not much improvement.

Heracleitus 2008-04-19 11:56:57 AM
FTFA: "I love being a priest!" he said. "I've been a priest nine months - and I love it!"

Before he got into this line of work he was a school teacher.

This just screams pedo to me.

The first few paragraphs are pretty funny if you read it with the inference that the guy's becoming a priest so he can rape some altar boys

My last year of Catholic School, our new principal was a priest. He showed up everyday in a brand new Buick, had the shiniest shoes you've ever seen, and never seemed to run out of food. Not a bad life, except for the whole celibacy thing of course.

Still, good on these guys though. Hope their lives become fulfilled this way.

The whole apocalypse thing helps too, now that we're having more environmental disasters it's only logical to assume the bible was right and our only hope of salvation is becoming Catholic so we can ride the Jesus bus outta here and leave everyone else behind.

It's a good thing; especially in the rural areas where all the priests were getting to be foreigners (Polish, Vietnamese, Mexican, Irish). Nothing clears out a congregation quicker than when the priest doesn't know the language, much less the local customs. Or with some of them, having learned about American culture from the TV, and assuming that's how everyone in small town America thinks.

Not to mention that the older fellows sex drive is not as pronounced as the younger fellows; especially since in the first few years of any priesthood the priests are full of their religious learning and not as jaded, thus less likely to be pervs.

And according to the new seminarian at the local church, the Catholic church has greatly stepped up their quality assurance and put the new seminarians through extensive psychological testing, several times, to weed out the stinkers.

My uncle was an accountant in a farked-up South American country that my other relatives had long since moved out from after finishing high school. For 15 years his local priest kept trying to convince him he was destined to take a vocation. He didn't buy it until he exposed his boss' shady dealings, then had to flee the country to escape the hitmen.

I'm not a huge religious person, but he credits his escape to luck and God. And he blessed my driving test.

/passed on the first try.
//had taken several tries to pass the written exam before this.

I've thought about becoming a minister, yet haven't taken the plunge. One of the things I'd have a problem with is the fact that no matter which denomination you are, there is politics to be dealt with, and I'm quite blunt, to say the least. I'd be run out of town every three months.

It's not so bad on the Catholic side, either. I've worked for a Jesuit parish, and they've put an interesting twist on possessions. The priests are still allowed to own possessions, with a proviso that if parishioners can put good use to them, they are encouraged to offer them up.

Ultimately, I figure the cloth is a lot like being in the military; you go where they send you, and they pay your bills.

To be fair, it's not the Catholics that believe in the "rapture" nonsense, it's the Bible-thumping Protestant evangelicals. The Catholic church has explicitly condemned "rapture" theology and dispensationalism as heresy.

Heh. Our church body (p) is seeing the same thing: middle age dudes left their jobs, uproot everything, and move to St Louis (p) or Fort Wayne (p) so they can study for the ministry.

Many of my classmates did felt that it was the decent thing to do. Some were either dissatisfied with their work and wanted something more spiritual. I knew one guy who had trouble with employment and figured that he would do better in the ministry. Let's say that he will have plenty of things to do before he oversees a congregation.

Some made the transition very well, some do not. It is NOT a easy path. Instead of dealing with a boss in suburbia, one deals with 100+ bosses in a rural congregation. And let us not forget those who decide to do mission work overseas. (One guy from Iowa married a Kenyan social worker. He is now pastor of a church in the slums of Kenya. Alas, the unrest in Kenya has been very hard on them.)

ciocia [TotalFark] 2008-04-19 01:44:03 PM
My cousin was widowed in his early 50s and decided to study for the priesthood. He is very happy with his decision--he has a little parish in southern Michigan.

But for the church, this is a stopgap. They need to figure out how to get more young folks in the clergy. In the old days, it gave the family a great feeling of prestige. But the times are different, and there has to be a different appeal.

minoridiot I wonder what that Pope job pays?

He gets paid three coins (gold or silver, I don't remember) after his death. They're put in the coffin with him. That's it.

Funny how they do this because they aren't getting laid, and they decide they may as well get public bennies for their celibacy.

Then, once they realize there's a whole new world of opportunity out there....

/not funny ha-ha, the other kind
