If by early testing they mean,"our other kids have weird ass names..." Actually the Anchorage Daily News article said she would probably tell us all what kind of malformation Trig has in about a week.

FTFA: Trig Paxson Van Palin weighed 6 pounds, 2 ounces. A news release from Palin's office says the 44-year-old governor and the baby are doing well and resting comfortably....The name Trig is a Norse word meaning "true" and "brave victory," Leighow said.

ALRIGHT!!!! Woo-Hoo! Score one for the Governor, and score 1 for Norse principles!

Larlo: Actually they say he has Down's Syndrome

There are much better early interventions these days for DS. Also given his health plan, he's as set to tackle DS as anyone could be. Let's just hope the little tyke doesn't need heart surgery like so many DS infants do.

Five kids isn't a clown car or a hallway. Its not like as a Governor and future high-grade pensioner, she won't have the resources to take care of them. Hell, one is already 18.

FTFA: The name Trig is a Norse word meaning "true" and "brave victory," Leighow said.

Oh, bullsh*t. From freedictionary.com (and make of it as you will):

trig 1 (trg)adj.
1. Smart and trim, as in appearance; neat.
2. Being in good condition.
tr.v. trigged, trig·ging, trigs
To make trim or neat, especially in dress.

[Middle English, true, from Old Norse tryggr, loyal, true; see deru- in Indo-European roots.]

trigly adv.
trigness n.

----
trig 2 (trg)
tr.v. trigged, trig·ging, trigs
1. To stop (a wheel) from rolling, as with a wedge.
2. To prop up; support.
n.
A wedge or other braking device.

[Perhaps of Scandinavian origin; akin to Old Norse tryggr, firm; see trig1.]

A "trig point" is a small tower that's part of a network that forms a conceptual grid of triangles over a geographical region, but this I assume is from the mathematical field and not any surname etymology.

Also:
Trig, adj. trim, neat, handsome. M.W., 159, 26. O. N. tryggr, true, trusty, unconcerned, trygging, security, O. Dan. trygd, trugd, confidence (Schlyter), Norse trygg, secure, unconcerned, confident, tryggja, to consider secure, tryggja sek, feel secure, Dan. tryg, fearless, confident. Cp. Cu. trig, tight, well-fitted, "trig as an apple." The M. E. trig means faithful, see B-S. Ramsay, II, 526, uses the adv. trigly in the sense of "proudly."

A GIS also seems to lead one to the idea that the surname Trigg is from the same roots, same etymology--but nobody's sure if it's Old Norse, Anglo-Saxon or even perhaps Cornish.

It's bad enough that kids get crappy, made-up names these days, but to blatantly give a b.s. meaning to the name? Argh.

Poor kid. I wish him well.

//love words and etymologies
/hate made up crap
///back to my beer break

FTFA: "Until yesterday we were planning bill signings, and then the governor gives birth," Leighow said. "I think it caught everyone off guard."

Uh... yeah. It's not like you knew this was coming for several farking months or anything.

Duh.

Wow, first Senator Gravel the open pothead, then a passably hot governor.
