What was Miles in that? Maybe 22-23?

Nice submission.

One of my favorite Davis tunes. I used to go to sleep with "Kind of Blue" looping on my stereo. Such a great album.

/jazz and classical trumpet player
//reminds me of why I kept playing for the last 17 years ... brilliant

Wookie Milson 2008-04-19 07:36:28 AM
Kind of Blue would be my Desert Island album, if I could only pick one. I've been playing a Larry Carlton-esque version of this song every day for the last thirty years as stretching/warm-up exercise.

GibbyTheMole 2008-04-19 07:44:34 AM
Wookie Milson:

Yep. KOB is definitely a desert-island disc if ever there was one. A couple more I'd pick would be Coltrane's "My Favorite Things", Oliver Nelson's "The Blues And The Abstract Truth", and Wayne Shorter's masterpiece "Speak No Evil". If you haven't heard "Speak No Evil", it's right up there in KOB territory. Brilliant stuff.

bargled 2008-04-19 08:29:49 AM
My god that was brilliant.

Mr. Davis did to Jazz what Mr. Hendrix did to rock - turned it on its head. Only Mr. Davis did it three times - Kind of Blue, Birth of the Cool and biatches Brew.

Kind of Blue is THE essential jazz album - it belongs in everybody's library. Please suggest THE essential album in other genres. (enable voting?)

JubeiKibagami 2008-04-19 09:54:05 AM
Don't forget Paul Chambers on bass.

Another supremely talented jazz musician who got hooked on the horse and died way too young.

I second all the above comments, but that thing trumpeters do to their jowls/necks is just... *shudder*...

Isn't today's hip-hop scene fascinating in comparison.

THE jazz album is Mingus Ah Um, btw.

Nope. Huge fan of On The Corner and other assorted Miles electric period stuff here.

Ordell [TotalFark] 2008-04-19 02:08:56 PM
Check out around 1:10, keep an eye on the trombonist in the background (white dude). He takes a draw on a cigarette. That struck me funny on several levels. You see someone else smoking in the bg at 2:35 when 'Trane is soloing. Can you imagine that today?

Ordell [TotalFark] 2008-04-19 02:10:48 PM
Ha. Just realized that's Miles smoking in the background. Smoking while playing a wind instrument... unreal.

As good as Kind of Blue is, Sketches of Spain is better.

Ordell: Smoking while playing a wind instrument... unreal.

Coltrane smoked too. Hell back then most jazz musicians smoked, including the trumpet and sax players.

There's some truth to that. And certainly some jazz listeners enjoy it more than they should, too. It would be an easier argument for you to suggest that jazz is a refuge for those that can't write songs, instead of those that can't play them.

You're right. Playing jazz is one of the greatest farking highs out there. I don't think it totally transfers to the audience either. That was a great observation. You must really love jazz.

Smitty?

Ah, YUP!

Regarding 'Biatch's Brew': bought it on vinyl the week it came out -still have it, if anyone wants to buy - and have NEVER been able to listen to the whole thing; in fact I think disc 2 has never been played.

It's interesting stuff but more admired than listened to.

Kinda Blue, tho'? Birth of the Cool? Man, this is the real stuff.

this. depending on what mood i'm in, shorter and coltrane flip-flop between being my fave sax guys, and that is probably my favorite album from wayne, with ju ju as a close 2nd.

Anything Mingus. Really. And then you can branch off to Eric Dolphy perhaps. And then Dolphy's work with Coltrane. And then Coltrane's work with McCoy Tyner. And then Tyner's work with Joe Henderson. And then Henderson's work with Andrew Hill. And then Hill's work with Kenny Dorham...

Just know jazz is very time-consuming. In a very good way.

dholway [TotalFark] 2008-04-19 10:32:12 PM
I know that I am in the minority on this, but I've always found Kind of Blue to be easy-listening NPR-jazz. Birth of the Cool is much more cool to my ears. I love early Louis Armstrong stuff, especially the Hot Fives and Hot Sevens, and I am seriously thrilled by the best of Charles Mingus, especially Mingus Ah Um and The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady.

I wonder why in todays world Miles racism is looked at as a quirk of his character but ty cobbs racism causes him to be looked down upon as a horrible individual.

I'll never suggest that Miles Davis wasn't a horrible individual. He sure could play the trumpet, though, and his trumpet playing is what I care about when I think of him. Something similar goes for Ty Cobb.

This is probably Tyner's most famous album, but it also happens to be very good. It's called "Trident".
