Kind of like the opposite effect from appearing on Fox and Friends. Do they really need political scientists for this stuff?

it's fairy tale news and democrats eat that stuff up. i'm not surprised at all.

Nestea Plunge: Republicans have a tough time recognizing broad satire and using it to their advantage. Lousy senses of humor as well.

A fine example of this:

Of course we need political scientist for this kind of stuff, have you not seen what most of those professors do all day? I shouldn't talk though as a political science major I should learn to ask do you want fries with that?

Political scientist is an oxymoron.

Moses To Sandy Koufax 2008-04-18 05:22:05 PM
Mainly, the people who watch TDS and TCR are young, liberal minded people, so this really isn't all that surprising. However an appearance on either show will do nothing for actual election numbers, as those same viewers, cognizant of the fact that voting accomplishes and changes nothing and is a huge waste of time, don't bother to go to the polls, since all elections are rigged anyway.

But yay for the Colbert bump. After key bumps (drug reference), it's my favorite kind of bump. A close third would be my lovely lady bumps.

Arnold T Pants 2008-04-18 05:23:13 PM
You mean liberals like seeing Democrats who will affirm their beliefs as opposed to Republicans who do not? Wow.

If there's another Democratic debate, it should be on Comedy Central and moderated by Stewart and Colbert. Comedy gold and a ratings bonanza. Not to mention add some humor and levity to this mess.

Didn't they both appear on the same night? The article said you have to compare one candidate who appears on the show with one who doesn't. Since they were both on, I think the opposite would happen. Hillary might see a small increase in donations while Obama sees a much larger increase.

Not a bad idea. Hell, they got all three on the show last night (kinda. Obama counts as a half). I can't imagine that it'd be that bad. Stewart was kickass back when he was on Crossfire and consistently amazes me when he actually has good questions for all sorts of people on his show.

A republican who would have not gotten a bit of coverage, let alone win Iowa, without Colbert. He's nuttier than farking Ron Paul, and with less good ideas.

But he had a sense of humor and looked great. It really has nothing to do with R or D, the bottom line is Republicans these days are about stuffy ass farkers when it come to any sort of humor. It makes them seem out of touch to young people. And me.

Exactly. And though Hillary appeared in person, she just had a short, scripted, walk-on bit; Obama was on via satellite, but was his segment was longer, and he was able to talk in a slightly more off the cuff fashion. I would expect Obama to get a bigger bump. Hell, of the three of them Edwards should get the biggest popularity bump - he was very funny and a good sport.

What I think was most interesting is the Edwards and Obama (who both appeared on the show) got to do Colbert's skits. Shrillary just got a bit part.

Edwards did The W0RD, (The edW0RD last night)

Barack did the ON NOTICE board.

Edwards was funnier. I wonder if one Hill or Barack will buy him those jet skis!

Iowans would have still loved the guy because he's a religious nutball, and the only two things Iowa cares about are its nutball religion and corn.

With the intense competition between the two contenders for the Democratic presidential nomination, pundits have mused over whether Hillary Clinton's appearance on "The Colbert Report" last night will give the former First Lady a so-called "Colbert bump," a surge in popularity which the show's host claims will accrue to any politician that appears on the show.

If she does, Obama will get the bigger bump. All she did was hijack Jimmy. Obama hijacked the On Notice board.

Ha, Obama's line about leaving Grizzly Bears on the On Notice board was killer. Perfect deadpan.

Edwards was funny too - his timing was great and he managed to sound like a regular dude instead of a politician.

Hillary was kinda meh. Although in her defense they didn't give her much to work with.

So was I... That said, with all of the focus on lapel pins lately, take a look at what Edwards was wearing. I'm not sure if it's a subtle hint, a symbol for something else, or a coincidence - but is that an "O" pin he's got on?

I thought that the edWØRDs segment was the funniest part of the show last night (and this whole week in Philly has been great).

Must be fun to be a politician who's out of the spotlight, because Edwards was genuinely comedic and seemed to be having a great time.
