That sure would make it difficult to muddy the waters with phrases like "Al Qaeda and other extremists" in Iraq while beating the drums of war with Iran.

I wonder if we can pick a side here, Al-Qaeda, a bunch of third world losers who blow up retards with suicide belts. Or Iran, a country that exports 2.5 million barrels of oil a day and has the second largest natural gas reserves in the world...hmmmmmm, well based on our brilliant foreign policy in the past I would have to go with the former...

Yep, McCain will asplode. You know what? He will just ignore it and not get called on it.

You guys remember way back in 2000 when you still had to really like Bill as a dude, McCain seemed like the straightest shooting politician ever, Lieberman seemed like an intelligent, principled US statesman (not an Israeli parliament leader), and the dollar was actually WORTH a dollar? Remember?

Good times. No wonder people kill themselves as they get older.

FTA: In a nearly 16 minute message posted on the internet, Zawahiri accused Shi'ite Iran of seeking to annex southern Iraq and slammed the Egyptian government for "starving" its people as part of a "Zionist-American plan.

...

He said a plot against Iraq by the US and Iran would lead to the Middle East region exploding.

so lets see, he's accusing iran of something, and grouping them in with america. coming from a group that likes to chant "death to america", i'd say that isn't a fond association.

Obviously, the Iraq thing is the center of gravity. I know people don't want to hear that, because they're fixated on getting out, but there it is. It will be interesting to see how this plays out in Anbar - I noted that Zawahiri criticized the Awakening Councils, but they are liable to be used against the Mahdi Army in Baghdad and points south sooner or later. I'd lay odds they're already being used against Shiite militias in limited circumstances, and have probably been instrumental in reactivating old Baathist intelligence networks in Shia Iraq. Sunni militias, combined with the kind of intelligence only Arabs can provide on other Arabs and American air power will be formidable indeed.

The embiggening of Iran as a result of the removal of the Baathist government in Baghdad has clearly deeply disturbed the Sunni Arabs. otherwise, the Americans couldn't have struck the deal they did in Anbar - undoubtedly with the help of the Saudis and Jordanians.

Anyway, back to the salient fact: Iraq is the center of gravity in the war against Muslim extremism, whether you like it or not. There'll be no withdrawal in 2009, or 2010, or 2011. I'd look for the offensive against the Mahdi Army and "special groups" to gather momentum. Playing the Sunni Card last winter really changed the war. I'd say we're well into Phase II now.

Time.com is claiming that Al-Sadr is back in Najaf or Kufa. I'm very skeptical of this claim. Al-Sadr has a 2,000-pounder with his name on it. If they pinpoint him within Iraq's borders, they'll splatter him for sure.

Uncle Sam wants the whole enchilada. They want to establish a client regime in Baghdad, marginalize Al Qaeda, topple the regime in Tehran, and roll-up Hamas and Hizbollah and the Syrian Baath Party. The whole ball of wax.

And the one whose westernized youth are oppressed by a pack of hardliners that would be marginalized if we re-established relations with them.

I can think of a lot of reasons why we should be at least talking to Iran right now, and about zero why we should bomb them. If we're willing to cozy up with Saudi Arabia, there isn't any reason we shouldn't do so with Iran. God forbid our oil is cheaper, our soldiers in Iraq were safer, and we'd have another ally to help us contain the Wahabis.

well, they're going to have to hold their horses until that 2.5mbpd and the 40% of the worlds crude that ships through the persian gulf can be rerouted or made up for in other ways.

Did you see that 40billion barrel find off Brazil from the other day? wow!
