I'd appeal that ruling too. It's obviously a First Amendment violation. If I lived in Indiana, I'd ask for a plate that says, "In Satan we trust." Then, when they denied it there would be Hell to pay.

I Said [TotalFark] 2008-04-18 10:05:02 AM
I usually agree with the ACLU, but if the Judge is right (and if I'm reading it right) that the $5 is there to cover donations and extra processes not involved in this OPTIONAL religious plate, then I don't think they should have to jack up the price just for the sake of making it more expensive. I see the ACLU's point, but if those fees are there to cover costs that the optional religious plate doesn't incur, then it shouldn't charge the extra $5

I came here to say the exact same thing.

Subby's correct, of course, that the ACLU are heroes for fighting this kind of bullshiat. There's nothing wrong with a religiously-themed licence plate, unless it's endorsed above others by being free, which is against the constitution.

And it's always heroic to fight for one of the documents in democratic civilizations.

Yes yes yes, the ACLU will not rest until they take all of your guns and the law mandates that an urban youth rape your daughter, we understand your hatred of the Constitution.

The problem I have with Indiana is that they are subsidizing single religion license plates, making taxpayers pony up $.50 for every Bible beater that has to tell everyone that they love Sky-Dude.

It's the national motto, fer fark's sake. I'm all for keeping prayers out of schools and legislatures, because I agree that those can directly create an atmosphere that one religion is favored over another, but I don't see any advancement or endorsement (the Constitutional litmus test) in having the national motto on the license plates.

/Indy native
//Catholic, so I don't get accused of being hostile to religion later

fifthhorseman 2008-04-18 10:08:20 AM
I love the plates. They go really well with the yellow magnetic ribbons and the Got Jesus bumber stickers. Awesome bozo filters for me. Just like my Darwin fish is to them. You want bitter? Go to east Indiana where the GM towns were. Anderson, Marion, Muncie. The epicenter of white-trash suck.

It's taking consistent positions like this that gives the ACLU a concrete directive. You don't get to pick and choose when somebody's pulling a fast one.

The Constitution is living document that changes with the times to reflect whatever value or idea liberals want but every word is set in solid stone never to be taken as anything other than a literal interpretation... You just have to ask a liberal to explain why this paradox exists before you will be able to figure out how the constitution can be both at the same time.

Incredulous [TotalFark] 2008-04-18 10:09:17 AM
Good call on the HERO tag, Subby. I agree. The ACLU certainly is heroic. I hope that appeal the idiot judge's ruling.

It shouldn't be on money ether. But thats besides the point. Their point was this state-funded religious plate was above the others because it was free, creating an image of bias twords this plate.

Thats wrong, and the plate should ether cost the same as the others, with the proceeds donated to charity, or not other at all.

radiumsoup: why is the ACLU spending money on this?

Because the ACLU is a God, USA and moral hating group of dirtbags, who wish for nothing more than complete chaos and for the scum of our country to run amock.

Seriously, there are very few cases (none of which include our SECOND AMENDMENT RIGHT) that the ACLU takes that actually help our country and society as a whole.

Screw the ACLU.

Yep. Like when they defended the right for neo-nazis to march through a Jewish neighborhood. They stand for the constitution...regardless of how popular or unpopular it makes them, and regardless of if they agree with it or not. They don't pick and choose their battles.

So yes, the ACLU deserves a HERO tag.

You don't pay extra for the words "Wander Indiana" or whatever they are using now because no special interest group is being subsidized through that plate. Same goes for the "In God We Trust" or whatever it is, plate. If you choose a plate that includes in its fee a donation to an environmental group, or a children's advocacy group, etc. you pay extra. If not, you don't. Thanks for wasting everyone's time ACLU....again.

I can't agree with the ACLU this time. The "God" phrase is "In God We Trust", as in the current national motto. If it wasn't a vanity plate, it wouldn't cost extra to just stamp that on every plate.

I'm all for changing it back to "E Pluribus Unum", though. This just doesn't strike me as a way of doing that.
