That's more of a show than we got from him in St Paul a few years back. When I saw them he hid behind the freakin drums all night.

Yeah, I saw A Perfect Circle open for Nine Inch Nails, and all he did was lean back and forth and sang. Trent ran around and broke stuff.

No way. Maynard's birthday is December 25th!
Happy Birthday Maynard, and hurry up with the new TOOL record.

That was awesome, he held him down for the whole song, he even kept singing while trying to choke the guy out.

I wonder if the fan has ever publicly commented on it.

The Glass Dragon 2008-04-17 11:06:32 PM
Tool was one of the most boring shows I ever saw in my life. No one moved; they just stood there, played, and walked off the stage. Maynard hid by the drums and went into some sort of trance about 30 minutes in.

I was so pissed I wasted $50 on those tickets.

And on another note - why the hell is Tool so freakin' popular anyway? I agree they're good musicians and Maynard is a good frontman, but they are not doing anything other progressive rock bands haven't done for the past 20 years.

carmody 2008-04-17 11:07:30 PM
...because you'd have to attend a Tool concert to do so?

What a joke.

Guess it's not for everybody, Tool is my favorite live experience. The video is just freakin awesome, great companion to amazing music. When I saw them last summer, he didn't hide, he was on his own platform singing and rocking out. To me, Tool's music doesn't Maynard to pump up the crowd by running around on stage or clapping. I think most rock fans have just gotten used to lead singers (who don't play instruments) running around on stage and putting on a show.

Transpogue 2008-04-18 12:01:33 AM
I don't think I'm alone in thinking that being body-slammed and held down by one of my little rock idols wouldn't be such a bad thing. If I knew Tori Amos, Bjork, or Dave Gahan would do that to me, I might just try it.

/no, not really
//saw a TINY girl get smash-sandwiched at a Tori show by two of her bodyguards when she rushed the stage...that didn't look fun

not too impressed. drunk fan, standing defenseless. walk up to drunk fool like you are going to greet them with a hug, hip toss. drunk fool is already out of it, now get your hooks in and choke em out.

surprised the fan didn't sue him for assault. Video doesn't show any sign that the fan was a threat. "Dude, I love you and I got on stage to tell you!.....waaahhhaaaat haapppenthed?"

I wouldn't be surprised if the guy was on a lot more than just alcohol. It is a Tool concert...

I've seen Maynard perform once with Tool and once with A Perfect Circle, both great shows.

Always liked Midnight Oil's philosophy: if a guy wants to get up on stage and flail around for a while, let him. Eventually, he'll give up. Peter Garrett used to let some of the fans sing backup with him.

There's a video somewhere on YouTube of Garrett giving an earful to a security guy who tackled some guy on the stage. Pretty interesting. (I'd link, but I'm on dial-up.)

44? That would have made him 30 or so on Undertow. I'm pleasantly surprised that a heavy metal musician could get that late of a start and still be successful. And he certainly looks relatively youthful.

Um, if you like Tool's music enough to attend their concert then logically you should enjoy the playing of said music. Tool is more dignified than your average metal band. If Maynard ran around stage yelling "Whoo hoo, Boise, Idaho rocks!" I would lose a little respect for him.

He did that when I saw them too. All you could see was his silhouette. they sounded so good live I thought they were lip synching. great show nonetheless

This is farkin' hilarious!

Went and saw A Perfect Circle live on their last tour before calling it quits. Maynard never let the lights hit him so he was in pitch darkness the whole time. It was fun, the crowd was better than the physical performance, but the music was the best part.

Not a bad O-Goshi by Maynard. Who would have thought he had any judo training? Next you will tell me Vladimir Putin knows judo. :)

I saw him in Providence about 12 years ago at a small club called the Strand. He asked for a volunteer from the audience. Some nitwit went up and was put in a big metal dog kennel and was abused for 2 songs. Flipped the cage over and over, kicked it, spit, ect.

Try to understand, you're talking to someone who willingly attends musical performances put on by Jared Leto. Concepts like dignity will be of no use to you here.

maybe he should just stand there and wait to be shot in the face like Dime did?

being on stage in arenas is scarry...ppl running at you turns it real dangerous real fast.

I like the rear naked choke...he had his hooks in and everything.

Seen Tool 3 times (Aenima, Lateralus, and 10,000 Days tours), and each one has been an incredible show. They're one of the very few bands that actually sounds better live than they do on CD. I suppose one could consider their show boring, but I actually like the fact that their concerts are more about the music and visuals than Maynard running around making a fool of himself.

New Age Redneck 2008-04-18 11:50:23 AM
Gratch

I concur. Saw them twice, tight playing and great sound (not too loud, vocals cut through). They have a great deal of dynamics that is probably difficult to record. They did "Flood" at one show which was cool, never really gave "Undertow" a chance, but it does have some fine songs.

/Lateralus = amazing

I love that song.

And just for the record, I'm not asking for the band to jump around and clap, or anything along those lines. I just want the band to show some excitement in what they play. They looked so farking bored up there.

I think Tool is OK. Not great, but OK. I went because one of my friends was saying it was the most incredible live show she ever saw, and they released some last minutes tickets to their show. I knew she wanted to go, so I took a chance and got em. I was just a few rows from the stage. It just wasn't exciting to me. But apparently I was in the minority because everyone kept raving about it. I was like, "Are we seeing the same show here?"

Maybe it's because I wasn't tripping balls on some drug, I dunno.

In contrast, exactly one week later I saw Rush. It was ten million times better.

Mm, Tool. Never been a fan, ever. When they first hit the 'spotlight' it felt like they were trying too hard, their fanbase was fanatical and made wild claims like "Tool is so farking heavy!".

I wish I could find my clip of Maynard singing a duet with Tori Amos.

That being said, I get the impression that Tool was one of the more successfully commercialized metal bands. They came out right at the shift of tastes, and the big push of bloated crap down people's throats. I feel this may have led to people being attuned to the hype prior to being desensitized to the commercialization of later bands.

1. If you see Tool live (or any band for that matter) you should be tripping to some degree. There's inaudible shiat going on that you can only hear when you're tripping. Also, their music has a good amount of drug references. Whenever I'm at a show and they sing about some drug, I'm like "hey! I'm on that!"

2. Rush sucks.

Badafuco 2008-04-18 02:40:14 PM
I saw Tool here in Ventura back in the early-mid 90's. That show freakin' rocked. Maynard was up front belting the lyrics, the band and sound were excellent.

Maynard needs to take some showmanship tips from Marilyn Manson. Fine, if you want to hide by the drums and do your thing, great. But some of us came to be a little engaged by the show, and that doesn't just mean jumping around the stage and screaming "I LOVE BOISE" like a dipshiat. Yeah, the music is good, but if I wanted to just listen to the music, I've got a nice enough CD player at home.

Exactly.

When I go to a live show, I want an experience I can't get from just listening to the CD. Tool did not offer that to me.

to each their own, i suppose...i've seen tool 9 times...imo, best farking band ever and best live show ever...and i've seen a lot.

personally, i prefer not to see them bouncing around on stage like a bunch of douchebags, that's not why i go and i think that would be distracting...there is enough going on with the music, lights and visual projections to occupy my attention...as far as showmanship goes, showmanship is getting onstage, starting the show on time, being professional, playing your balls off and giving the best performance possible, thanking the audience and saying goodnight...if i wanted to see jugglers and acrobats, i'd go to the farking circus.

and finally, not only is this clip just funny as hell, but it also shows just how good tool are as a band...no one misses a beat, no one stops, maynard keeps singing...they don't let one drunken idiot ruin the moment for them or the audience, and that's part of why they rock...anyone else would have stopped, thrown a tantrum and left...

tool, baby!

NONE of the Tool fans I know are Rush fans.. or at least not big Rush fans. Some of you in here are incorrectly postulating that fans of X must be fans of Y based on some wide concept you have of 'progressive rock', but you really don't know the first thing about either band.
