The ABC debate was the worst we've had so far. It was Obama debating not only Clinton but the two moderators as well, who seemed unabashedly asking the same questions we've heard over and over with Clinton pounding Obama while professsing the questions come "from others." The obvious bias of the ABC moderators was made clear, should anyone doubt it, when they raised the business of Wiliam Ayres from the Weather Underground--when Obama was 8 years old! What was suspicious was Clinton's easy piling on about this, clearly aware that it was going to be asked. The whole Ayres thing also smacked of old-fashioned red-baiting which I though responsible journalism had disavowed some time back.

This was not a contribution to a discussion of the issues, which the nation has been requesting. Clinton's "gotcha" piling on last weekend and extending into this week and iinto the debate is being rejecting by the voters, witness the continued slide in her polling numbers.
Yes, Obama was on the defensive because the questions were so designed. It was disgusting, not helpful and only further indicated how desperate Hilary Clinton is to win at any cost.

FuturePastNow [TotalFark] 2008-04-17 07:12:09 PM
I tried watching the debate, but I changed the channel the moment they aired the video question "Do you believe in the flag?" I know a waste of time when I see it.

You're a better man than I, Gunga Din. I haven't been able to even approach one of Brooks' columns in months, fearful of being made dumber for having read them.

I manage to get through a Krauthammer scrawling once in a blue moon, but even then I worry about catching his strain of batshiat crazy.

The only thing I've heard David Brooks say in the last decade or so that was at all acceptable to my wax-filled ears was, when he was defending a certain psychotic Vice-President, "You have to remember, he thought he was going to die in two or three minutes. He thought he was going to burn to death underground in jet fuel."

Do you have a source on that, ShutterGeek? I'm honestly asking, because god would that be sweet.

I wonder, though, if winning like that would embitter too many Clinton supporters. I think the only way to stop that would be for her to concede in a non-forced manner. I'm just hoping that a slim victory in PA followed by a crushing defeat in NC will be enough to get her to realize how much she is farking things up for Democrats.

There have been reports that prisoners including children were sexually molested. This needs to be investigated.

Didn't RTFA article until I got some help
www.tvguide.com

Anyway, TFA raised some good points:

It was pointless melodrama deployed to cover up the moderator's own lack of cojones. Certainly, Obama's most earnest fans are all a-kvetch today, but they should a) understand that this is a good time for Obama to be taking the lion's share of the chin music,

I've said this before, but it IS good for all this to come out now rather than in the General. And, honestly, Obama should be practicing his response to any questions about any of his "-gates" from now until the his first debate with McCain.

b) think more broadly - last night's debate was bad for the discourse, and bad for all Democratic voters.

THIS. The fact that a lot of the first hour was an assult on Obama was a good thing. (See above)

The fact that the first hour was spent debating trivial non-stories was the FAIL.

Obama could have responded better, but he'll get more chances to shake it off (new window) So I won't complain about how Obama did in this past debate. What I will complain about is waisting an hour of the debate before it turned to the real issues that Americans care about.

Why does Hillary hate America?
I want to know what they've promised the Colombian free trade lobbyists who gave Bill 800k and had employed Penn to lobby for them.
I want to know why she kept lying over and over about Bosnia and Ireland and NAFTA and don't give me this I was tired BS. You repeated it on several occasion and even after your account was challenged you continued to lie then make excuses when caught.

I want to know why Georgie who worked for Clinton and owes them a great debt was allowed to not only moderate but didn't disclose to the audience his relationship with the Clintons.

i'm not so sure. he basically flat out told the mods that they were asking him stupid questions. what else was he supposed to do? walk off the stage? that would have gone over like a fart in church.

i think he made the best of a really bad situation to find yourself in. they were ganging up on him on camera.

but ya, the thing that bothered me the most wasn't them attacking one candidate or the other, but the fact that the moderators took a big steaming dump on the tradition of political debate, our national discourse, and democracy. i mean, what's the next step? having the american idol judges moderating?

hell, they probably would do better.

It's true. And from now on he'll probably add "recite 20 reasons why I love the flag and America" to his daily regimen. He won't get worn down by inane questioning again.

Prospero424 [TotalFark] 2008-04-17 10:45:49 PM
My problem was that the questions seemed to be designed solely to reinforce the caricature and stereotypes of Obama the right wing are trying to create rather than actually address anything substantive.

And how many people think they're going to ask McCain about his buddy John "America deserved 9/11 'cause it tolerates fags" Hagee, or about his wife's various problems, or even simply ask him to explain the differences between Sunnis and Shiites, as he understands them?

Riiiiiiiight.

Yeah, but you know what? If they actually talk about those issues, they'll find that they don't disagree about anything. All of the Democratic candidates have more or less been marching in lock-step from the outset. When the Republicans had multiple candidates, they argued about the issues. Was McCain too cozy with the Democrats? Was Romney sincere about his conservatism? Was Giuliani a one-issue guy? Was Huckabee too much of an economic populist? Just how batshiat crazy was Ron Paul, anyway? The Democrats don't have those discussions because the party leaders have done an amazing job enforcing the party orthodoxy. They don't debate the issues because they don't disagree about anything, except whether the government-run health care system should have a mandate, or whether we should pull out of Iraq in 60 days or 90 days or whatever. When you talk about the Democratic horse race, there's one issue that keeps recurring: demographics. Clinton has the women and the Latinos and the working-class; Obama has the blacks and the college kids and the highly educated. Give me a demographic profile of a Democrat and I'll tell you which candidate they support 90% of the time. It has nothing to do with the issues and everything to do with cultivating constituencies.
