Man, for an uppity elitist you'd think he'd have the sense to be more wealthy.

nekom [TotalFark] 2008-04-17 09:12:46 AM
well he's not a former president. Bill gets $200,000 just for showing up somewhere.

$4 million in just one year is pretty wealthy. it's almost reserve small forward money.

Hell, Mike Hampton has made 4x that per year warming a bench with a hangnail since '05.

Don't hate the player, hate the game

Submitter but only 1/5 of what Clintons made

I think this shows that Hillary will be better on the economy. If I was her I put that in a commercial.

You know, for someone who thinks Hillary is a meteor hurtling towards earth to destroy us all, you really do seem to kind of have a little thing for her. I mean, come on. You're getting to the point of it almost being funny.

You took that meteor thing the exact opposite way of that I intended it. But it worked. I meant that it was an unstoppable force that we could only watch and despair. I really don't think that any one person can destroy us all. Can she really hurt the US. Oh hell yeah. Will she? Again hell yeah. But unless things get really out of control I think we will survive 4 years of Hillary.
And yeah I kinda do have a kind of respect for Hillary. It amazing to watch the best at the hight of their game. You think that I am trying to help Hillary? I know the value of tips from the internet! I really doubt that Hillary has people searching Fark looking for the next campaign idea. It's all academic for us. It fun to debate what could, should or would happen in the election. And that is all I am doing. The man I most wanted to see in the election is out and what is left is the picked over remains.

Who. Farking. Cares.

I never understood why all the angst about this- so these people are successful in life, isn't that what we WANT in a president? Remember the LAST time we picked a guy who's wealth came from inheritance? The guy who failed at every business he tried but still ended up wealthy?

How'd that work out?

Heh. I don't think that. I just think the whole thing is funny. It reminds me of something SNL would do. Like the opposite of a backhanded compliment. You're like complimentary insult guy.

Guy 1: "Man that Hillary really burns my britches."
Guy 2: "Yeah, she lies about everything."
Guy 3: "I'm with you guys. And I bet she'd be good on the economy."
Guys 1 and 2: *quizzical dog*

So which candidate did you like?

Tastes Like Chicken: I just think the whole thing is funny.

That's the way you should take it. I'm not some rabid political nut thinking that if I just debate better on Fark that I will actually matter. I'm just like a sports announcer, or maybe a bookie. The more interesting the game is the more I get into it. This is an exciting election and I am following it because it is entertaining. I look at the player and I tell you what I think is going to happen. I debate the strengths and weaknesses of the players and what is happening on the field. I don't think that any of them are going to save or damn us. I do think that there are better and worst and I think you know who I would vote for if the election was today. That does not mean that I can not look at the others and point out the good and bad in them.

Obama's been "wealthy" for like 2 years. I don't think that's long enough to be elite.

I am not asserting that she or anyone for that matter, regardless of gender, is engaged in some enterprise to separate me from any wealth I have accrued but it must be said, and said plainly, that she is not dealing with a person without significant financial resources available.

i THINK that if you were to elect a poor person for a change, you might expect policies that would help out the average American.

MAKES me sad that only rich people can mount a campaign.

if Obama wasn't rich all his life, i suppose that makes him the closest thing to an average American.

$4.1 million is "not bad"? I could retire to a life of extravagant hedonism on half of that.

Hell, I could "Drity Sanchez" Christina Ricci for 1/100th of that...less if I tell her it's for an edgy independent film!

Who are you talking about? From your past comments, it would seem you are talking about Bush, however, Bush walked away with a $13.4-million dollar profit when the Rangers were sold to Tom Hicks.

MCStymie 2008-04-17 11:43:30 AM
Dirty, no less, although doing a "Drity" Sanchez is, in fact, far filthier.

Hmm. I'm sure that's what all the lottery winners say. Then they are broke in 5 years. I could certainly live well for the rest of my life with 4 mil and be comfortable with only 2 mil, but I guess we differ on what "extravagant hedonism" entails.

No, people should to be punished for their "success", because more often than not that success came at the expense of those in the working class. Wealth is not something that can be earned, only stolen.

How many children could have gotten health insurance coverage for the cost of a single Clinton speaking engagement? Won't somebody PLEASE think of the children?

I understand your sentiment and agree with it but look at it this way: You want a President who is smart enough to understand complex situations and develop solutions for them, right? Odds are that anyone who can do that has already used those skills to make a few bucks.

I'm curious what loopholes the Clintons used to get down to the 25% bracket. Seems like they got out of paying over a million in taxes somehow, even with the large "charitable contributions".

/DRTFA, probably should have.

ihatedumbpeople 2008-04-17 12:14:53 PM
Oh, and it's nice to see both Clinton and Obama's charitable donations are directly in proportion to their income. NOt sure which % is the maximum allowed to claim on the tax filing, but I'm guessing these guys are donating just enough to write off as much as possible and no more.

Well, he has two books on the best seller lists, so that's probably a big part of it..

Sure it's only 1/5th of the white family's earnings, but he still gets a whole 3/5ths of a vote. That should be enough if he really loved democracy.

And it's sad that so many people talk sarcastically about it as though it's not the way things work.

It's called book income. There are celebrities who have written much worse stuff who got much more.

Audacity of Hope is the only politician's book I've read, ever, that I didn't regret reading. It was actually pretty interesting in parts.

Almost all the money comes from his book sales if no one pointed it out.
