You'd give them a three-week standing ovation if they performed in Barnacles! masks.

Just because Mike Meyers features him in his movies doesn't make him good.

Bacharach deserves something better like, say, another album w/Elvis Costello.

People who don't understand that Bacharach is awesome are the same people who think American Idol is good, the Strokes are original, and their favorite band is better than my favorite band.

You missed his point, Harry. Behold, Monty Python:

Mrs. Hendy: Do all philosophers have an S in them?
Mr. Hendy: Yeah I think most of them do.
Mrs. Hendy: Oh... Does that mean Selina Jones is a philosopher?
Mr. Hendy: Yeah... Right, she could be... she sings about the Meaning of Life.
Mrs. Hendy: Yeah, that's right, but I don't think she writes her own material.
Mr. Hendy: No. Maybe Schopenhauer writes her material?
Mrs. Hendy: No... Burt Bacharach writes it.
Mr. Hendy: There's no 'S' in Burt Bacharach...
Mrs. Hendy: ...Or in Hal David...
Mr. Hendy: Who's Hal David?
Mrs. Hendy: He writes the lyrics, Burt just writes the tunes... only now he's married to Carole Bayer Sager...
Mr. Hendy: Oh... Waiter... this conversation isn't very good.
Waiter: Oh, I'm sorry, sir... We *do* have one today that's not on the menu. It's a sort of... er... speciality of the house: Live Organ Transplants.

that dude's songs have only been used by a thousand performers to sell about a billion albums. Gotta give him that.

I'm not a fan of any of them either. But. They far from suck. In their day, they drew huge crowds and sold millions of albums. They had their days in the sun and their time is over, but, they far from suck.
Makes no sense to label the past as shiat if you didn't live through it.

Someone left a CD on my computer of a Burt Bacharach tribute concert from a few years ago. I recall Sheryl Crow did a great version of "One Less Bell to Answer," which has always been one of my favorite ballads. If you study the structure of Bacharach's songs they're amazingly unique and light years from the AABA of most pop music. The man deserves tribute.

robbiedo: Aren't you the clueless one. Much of the best music you ever here is written by professional writers, such as Burt Bacharach. His best work is just a different generation, but his influence in popular culture is pervasive, and well regarded.

Lawrence Welk sucks too. Herb Alpert - now there's talent.

Travis_Bickle 2008-04-16 03:57:17 PM
There's a concert from a few years ago with Burt and Dionne that PBS aired. I don't care what anyone says, it rocked and Dionne can still bring it.

As much as I love Bacharach, unless "our time" was the 60's and early 70's, most Farkers are not going to be agreeing with you on that, submitter.

Designating the "best" songwriter is not something easily quantifiable. In my opinion, though, one who deserves some consideration (among others with a substantial body of work) might be Neil Finn.

One of the best gifts I ever got was the 3 CD Bacharach compliation. It starts with him doing the theme to the move The Blob. Lots of fun.

Moves through this period of unquestionable genius with tunes like San Jose and What The World Needs Now and Close to You (it's frickin genius, really) - including things like Promises,Promises (which has the weirdest rhythmic hiccups) and maybe the most overlooked thing they did: One Less Bell to Answer. Of course, Hal David gets a heft dose of credit for those amazing, simple, overwhelming lyrics. The problem with the song is that Marilyn McCoo performed it in such a sterile fashion (listen to her not caring when she sings "I don't know how - in the world - to stop think/ing of him..." sheesh.) that people think of it as sterile Muzak.

Instead, Bacharach (like Mancini, maybe) hit the interface between the sterile 1950s straightlaced martini background music and the up and coming challenging, thoughtful songwriting that the 60s began.

Anyone can write a pop song. But Bacharach, then, didn't just write the music - he defined a new structure that was smart, hummable, and - with Hal David - finely crafted songs that will live ong after you and I have passed on. Not many can claim that.

Listen to "This Guy's In Love With You" or "I Say A Little Prayer For You." Wow. Perfect pop nuggets.

Context. Without the Austin Powers movies, Bacharach would have been rightfully confined to history. Can you tell me anyone under 30 (40?) would know who he is if not for Meyers? Only music geeks.

Keep digging, you'll make China before you know it. Anyone outside of your own (apparently quite limited) point of reference musically must certainly be known only to "geeks"? Weak.

Bought the Black and White album when it came out and got the white vinyl 7" with that came with it and had that on one side; it's been a big favorite ever since. Only saw them once in '80 (or maybe early '81?) -- they were great. Burnel was the first guy to give me a real appreciation for the sound of a Fender bass. What a great tone he gets.

I've also got a Hugh Cornwell album from '79 that's a collaboration with drummer Robert Williams -- they do a great version of White Room on it.
