1. Echo & the Bunnymen
2. New Order
3. Talking Heads
4. Psychedelic Furs
5. Elvis Costello
6. The Police
7. Depeche Mode
8. Duran Duran
9. The Cure
10. XTC

The voters were high. Cure, XTC and New Order should be on top. Talking Heads, too. Elvis Costello did most of his best work pre-1981. the Police, too. Duran Duran was the Spice Girls of the early 80s. Echo is fine, but should be 8 or 9.

I contend Talking Heads were better than Echo and The Bunnymen. Plus where are The Nails?

Sweat baby sweat baby sex is a Texas drought
Me and you do the kind of stuff that only Prince would sing about
So put your hands down my pants and I'll bet you'll feel nuts
Yes I'm Siskel, yes I'm Ebert and you're getting two thumbs up
You've had enough of two-hand touch you want it rough you're out of bounds
I want you smothered want you covered like my Waffle House hashbrowns

Maybe I was just thinking that way because I had Autoamerican from 1980 as a kid (Rapture, The Tide is High, etc.). It wasn't until much later that I was listening to their pre-Parallel Lines punk material. Oh well.

I love the Police, love them, but I wouldn't really put them in the same category as Echo, New Order, Talking Heads, or the Psychedelic Furs.

Nor Depeche Mode, for that matter...

THIS. I don't know exactly what constitutes New Wave, but the Talking Heads are one of the best bands ever. Would the Smiths be in this category?

Can't argue with the Bunnymen choice at the top. Great band in their prime; saw them in '81 and again in '84 or '85. Will Sergeant is a greatly underrated guitarist. And I loved Pete de Freitas' drumming.

That's a strange list. I don't know why Costello is on there. Perhaps his early stuff, but not his later stuff. And he's not all that, I think. He's like "adult contemporary" before there was such a thing - not that there is anything wrong with that.

Moreover, what about Blondie? Where the fark is Devo? Hello, The Cars?

I have a hard time calling Television "New Wave". I always thought of them as Proto-Punk along the lines of The Velvet Underground and Iggy.

I mean, they pre-date the Ramones and were the first real punk band to play at CBGB. Still my favorite of those bands.

Just so completely different from the rest of the punk crowd, but not really New Wave IMO.

Talking Heads should be #1. No argument at all. I actually think I read somewhere that Seymour Stein thought that they were the first New Wave act.

I also have a wild feeling theres some Los Angeles stuff thats missing. The only band I can think of off-hand is X, but they arent really "New Wave"

the first two are new wave. human league was new british invasion electropop, the cars weren't really new wave, and duran duran were new romantics.

It seems like they're making a value judgment on what qualifies as "new wave." But then, I can't explain Elvis Costello's or The Police's inclusion. This is the kind of bullshiat you get when you ask people for their opinions and then just tally up the results.

To my way of thinking, "'80s new wave" has to be a style of music characterized by pop tempo, thinner, treble-heavy mixing and synth. It can bear some jazz, techno, or ska influence, but not too much or it falls out of new wave (e.g. Oingo Boingo, The Police). Personally, I would leave The Smiths out on a purely subjective opinion that their sound wasn't pop enough, but I would listen to argument on this. I can't decide on Talking Heads, but I'm leaning toward inclusion.

DrBenway [TotalFark] 2008-04-15 02:05:46 PM
Among the stranger videos from the period: Echo and the Bunnymen "Seven Seas"... Mac was a pretty one back in the day.

Dynascape: I have a hard time calling Television "New Wave".

I don't disagree with you. That whole new-wave/punk/pop/proto-punk era is difficult to label and debatable. I just dig Television and took the liberties of including them. The Heads deserve the #1 slot.

Dynascape: I also have a wild feeling theres some Los Angeles stuff thats missing.

Oingo Boingo fits that request perfectly.

Echo and the Bunnymen? Blech.
I can see not having the Smiths as #1, but for them to not even make the list is insane.
The Cure should be higher on the list, too. Much higher.

Just bought Echo & the B's Crystal Days box set. On one Scandahoovian tour their record company wouldn't allow them to play their own songs so they just played covers of the Doors, Velvets, Television, Dylan, etc... Disc 4 of the box set. Full of win, that one is.

This, very much (the labeling dilemma). Never really thought of Echo and the Bunnymen as new wave (no keyboards for one thing, which seemed fairly standard for the genre) -- more of a neo-psychedelic band to my thinking.

Television was done by the end of '78, so you can't really count them on an 80's list anyway. But they were a remarkable band, and an all-time favorite of mine.

I have excellent news for the world. There’s no such thing as New Wave. It does not exist. It’s a figment of a lame coonts imagination. There was never any such thing as New Wave. It was the polite thing to say when you were trying to explain you were not into the boring old rock ’n roll but you didn’t dare to say ’punk’ because you were afraid to get kicked out of the farking party and they wouldn’t give you coke any more. There’s New Music, there’s New Underground Sound, there’s Noise, there’s Punk, there’s Power Pop, there’s Ska, there’s Rockabilly, but New Wave doesn’t mean shiat.

XTC in slots 1 through 4, Dukes of Stratosfear in slot 5 and then Talking Heads in 6 through 8, Elvis Costello in 9 with The Cure in 10.

Walt_Jizzney 2008-04-15 02:36:25 PM
Depeche shoulda been higher.

But Echo #1? Nygga, please.

Methinks that the voters were made up of a LOT of kids that weren't even born in the 80's, or were like 2 years old when MTv was still playing the Psychadelic Furs and Ultravox.

Ha - there's a CD series that has a remix for "On the Loose" by Saga. It's a remix service.

In my opinion, Talking Heads & Elvis Costello both top Echo & The Bunnymen. Nothing against them, but even The Cure & The Smiths would have an argument (though at that point you're just splitting hairs).

/Where are The Cars?
//Do they count?
///What about the Police?
