I was immediately reminded of all the "anti-pornography" crusaders who spend their days looking at pornography.

Probably, but it's the old saying "less is more". Not just religion though. Parenting has some to do with it also.
My 12 year old daughter respects Miley more than Paris, Britney or her little sister. She refers to Paris only as "that stupid one who's not an actress".
(sniff) I'm so proud of her.

"when performers slink around in schoolgirl outfits"

I defy anyone to slink in an actual schoolgirl outfit. A pleated miniskirt and a cutoff with a collar are not anywhere near being possibly mistaken for anything similar. Call me when someone manages it with the knee-length wool socks, ankle-length skirt, and high-nicked blouse.

There's an old saying in marketing: "Everything implies its opposite."

You want to draw people's attention to sex? Talk about NOT having it!

/This is basic marketing and psychology
//Or, for people who don't read frequently, NEWS!

You also get the added factor that many will look at or otherwise patronise a girl that claims to be virginal a little more than they would a girl who's out & out sexual. A great example is Christina Aguilera & Britney Spears (years ago before the whole freaky Brit). Brit claimed to be virginal while Christina sold the whole sexy siren thing. Brit did better on the charts even though Christina was actually a better singer than she was. People are just enthralled by virgins.

/good looking virgins, that is

I think it's mental. Then there are the rings, which just creep me out horribly. It's like these people are another species, except sci-fi never prepared me for that kind of bizarre in my aliens.

Sex is a biological imperative. Yes, it can certainly lead to serious problems, so be careful with it. But outright denial - it's like denying your very humanity. CREEPY.

Yep. Nothing says "wholesome" like prancing around stage in a skintight outfit. She gets to use her sexuality to advance her career and take the moral high ground at the same time.

Ed Grubermann [TotalFark] 2008-04-15 04:34:43 AM
Tucci: Donnie & Marie Osmond would like a word with that author.

To be fair, Marie Osmond never made a big deal out of being a virgin. Yes, she put out a "more wholesome than your saint of a mother" vibe, but she never used her virginity as an advertising gimmick.

It's much more rare to find a 15-yr-old who's being marketed as a slut. The Runaways, maybe, but I can't think of others off the top of my head. ... Lolita. That's like the exception that proves the rule.

Exactly, of course they're going to sell their chastity as a marketing angle. What should they do, try to out-whore Paris Hilton? Oh, I see, they should just perform, then go home, and talk about nothing else. That'll sell albums.

What, nobody's posted the pics of Miley and some female friend lounging/hugging/wrestling in their underwear yet?

Methinks the whole "virgin" thing is just in reference to penetrative sex.

It doesn't account for all the muff that teenage girls are diving into these days.

I do occasionally wonder if guys who've grown up in the internet age are surprised, upon their first sexual encounter, to find that women tend not to moan orgasmically and look grateful when you pull out and start masturbating in the general vicinity of their face.

Only very occasionally, I should clarify.

As for the whole marketing of virginity as sex thing, I just worry about the kind of people who plan this stuff - because we all know that it isn't the girl in question. Somewhere, sometime, some adults sat around and discussed how best to market a young girl as a sex symbol. I hope her dad wasn't involved.

I think the trend of announcing virginity started with Brooke Shields. I have to give Jessica Simpson the tiniest amount of grudging respect for actually waiting until marriage, assuming she was telling the truth, but the rest of them are just attention whores. So sick of looking at/hearing about Miley Cyrus I could puke.

Has nothing to do with porn.

You'd be hard pressed to find an American femal between, say, 13 and 25, who hasn't had some kind of sexual encounter with another girl.

Before you get all high and mighty, go look at what ALL teenage girls are wearing.
And that's a dance outfit.

I think you're overstating it fairly drastically (I'm sure you do so deliberately to make a point, of course) but I don't entirely disagree, if the states is anything like the UK. I'm not sure it extends to anything serious, but faux-lesbianism for show is virtually passé at this point, it's so common.

I think porn might have something to do with it, though. It goes against the 'porn =/= reality' concept as mentioned previously, but I do think the ready and plentiful access to porn provided - and the way porn culture has gone more mainstream - has influenced the way in which people behave sexually. I couldn't back that up with any kind of evidence, but it's my pulled-out-of-my-ass observation of the day.

It seems inherently wrong to be discussing porn in a Hannah Montana thread.

It's ABSOLUTELY changing people's sex behaviors.

That's irrefutable at this point and there's been studies to back it up.

Think about it:

Any and every teenager (in pretty much the whole world, China and Muslim countries notwithstanding) has had pretty much unfettered access to all the porn they could possibly want since they were old enough to use a computer.

And the porn of today is nothing like the porn 20 years ago . . . .

For good or for ill, them's the facts.

/cold dead hands, young men/boys have no idea how good they have it these days, etc.

Those 'ring-bearers' still have sex. They just take it in the rear instead. Because nothing says "virgin" like taking it up the pooper!

Just like every generation before them, this generation is having plenty of sex.
