You could go outside right now, and grab a spoonful of soil from your yard. It alone, would contain roughly 4000 different kinds of bacteria, many of which would never have been identified before.
Walk down the road, and grab another sample. There will be probably 4000
different
types of bacteria in THAT sample. Many of which, have never been identified.
There are SO many different species of bacteria, that there is almost no point in trying to categorize them.

What you said...
I admit that my knowledge of things like microorganisms is mostly attributed to my reading of "A Brief History of Nearly Everything" by Bill Bryson. (3 times)
But I do have a little self-educating on my own that backs up much of what he said on this subject. In other words, My own research agrees with his.
Is it 100% accurate? I can't really say. But given our current understanding of biology, and the sheer numbers of evolved species in general, I think there is more truth to what he has surmised, than bullshiat.
