Trading fossils (and anything like that) is a lucrative business. Especially online. If I had the money I would invest!

/and of course help the tribe out at the same time

meh. I only collect aborted dinosaurs.

FTA: the Blackfeet Nation is trying to sell off one of its treasures - a perfectly preserved 74-million-year-old baby dinosaur.

"It's only missing the feet and the end of the tail," said paleontologist Jack Horner of Bozeman's Museum of the Rockies.

Sounds like indian trickery to me. We know that the Earth is around 6,000 years old, so this fossil has to be a hoax.

It's a scam. There's no way it's over 6000 years old.

I read that as " help stamp out a struggling tribe".

if i had the money i totally would buy it, ever since i was a kid i've wanted a dinosaur fossil, preferably a raptor claw or t. rex skull, but a baby dino would be boss.

This should really stay in public domain.
If sold to a private collector, then Jack Horner (as well as other paleontologists) will be mightily pissed off, and rightly so.

That said, I just came back fossil hunting fine minutes ago. Not a bad day, found Triartrhus trilobites such as this one:

Well they ARE heathens, after all. Satan's hand is undoubtedly guiding them in this action, the better to make good Christians doubt the the light of the Good Book.

Seriously, selling it off, that's kind of a shabby thing to do to the grandfather of the buffalo... but I guess they need money. Selling casts and arranging a lucrative multi-museum tour for the specimen would probably garner a lot of money too.

I'd be inclined to buy a nice cast of it. Selling the actual fossil to a private owner doesn't seem to be the best moneymaker.

There must be some way to convince the Blackfeet to keep this treasure public domain. Unfortunately, given the sanctions and legal problems, I don't think that the Blackfeet feel appreciated by their US neighbours. Perhaps if the public pressured the BIA to accept a Blackfeet museum in lieu of sanctions, then everyone would win? After all, that would allow the Blackfeet to continue to host paleontological expeditions in the Two Medicine area. Paleontology might become a new economic base for the Blackfeet, even.

The BIA could use this idea to begin a new era of flexibility, innovation and sustainability.

what a load of crap.....legitimate scientific study of the Kenniwick man is still in litigation because the Indian Nation claims "ancestral heritage" or some such crap.....but give them a tight budget, and an itch for fast cash, and they will sell one of the most incredible fossil finds ever.Maybe when gas hits 5 bucks a gallon on the rez we can get Kenniwick man out of storage and learn something.

The only way you are going to find better preserved fossils is in South Beach or LA.
