Absolutely true. The myth of the liberal media monopoly should've died with the passes issued to Bush in 2000, and the ridiculousness of the idea is only made more apparent with each passing day that the media gives McCain free passes.

smooshie [TotalFark] 2008-04-13 04:02:42 PM
Really? The same media that "REVEALED OMG EXCLUSIVE OMG" how McCain maybe possibly could have had an affair with a lobbyist (while offering no proof whatsoever)?

And, actually, the article didn't really accuse him of banging her, just pointed out that for such an "anti-establishment maverick", he sure does seem to hang out with lobbyists a lot. Right-wing bloggers spun that article that way, and pretended that it was some sort of scandal-sheet piece of junk rather than a rather damning portrayal of hypocrisy.

The article in question was poorly written. They should have never played up the sex part of it. It had brought up some important issues-but the others in the media zeroed in on the "sex" aspect of it. Even though the actual article never accused John McCain of it.

No, the press LOVES a candidate that gives them "access" to the press. It makes their job easier than going out and doing actual reporting.

I Said: And Obama. And Hillary.

WTF? They find some relatively minor incident and harp on it all day every day, and that's a "free ride?" Even when it is fairly important issue, every single show on every single 24 hour "News" channel leads or dedicates the entire hour to it. Day after day after day. With nothing about McCain except something like "The Maverick took the Straight Talk Express to Pennsylvania today..."

Yes, there coverage of ALL the candidates is incomplete and cartoonish, but McCain has been getting a truly free ride for years.

Bill Frist 2008-04-13 06:33:28 PM
They are completely correct.

The media has been biased towards McCain, Obama and Clinton for a long time (no wonder they are the last three candidates standing), but hte fellating and heavy lifting the press does for McCain is absurd.

Lionel Mandrake [TotalFark] 2008-04-13 06:34:04 PM

NYZooMan 2008-04-13 06:35:39 PM
McCain's run hasn't started yet.

The media's covering the battle over the other party.

Should be obvious enough for any Obama translator out there.

We'll see...I think you're probably right, but I won't be terribly shocked if you're wrong. He treats reporters like friends, and they suck it up. This has being going on for a long time. His hardest questions will probably come from the public at "debates" or "town hall meetings," although those are pretty tightly controlled/scripted, too.

Partisan 2008-04-13 06:58:28 PM
McCain is getting a free ride on Iraq.

Since the primaries began he's been using "Bush Talk" on Iraq: talking up the surge, talking up "winning", warning of the disaster should we begin withdrawing and accusing the Dems of trying to "legislate defeat".

Somebody, in the media or otherwise, needs to ask him a simple question: How will we pay for an indefinite war in Iraq? The Bush policy of financing this war through debt won't work forever. McCain should explain to us whose taxes will be raised and how high, or what specific domestic programs should be cut.

If he wants this war so badly, he must be willing to tell us what sacrifices we should expect. By not asking him to explain these sacrifices, the media is giving him a free ride on the issue. That free ride, just like the "free ride" Bush has given us in Iraq, must end.

t3knomanser 2008-04-13 06:59:26 PM
Dear Internet,
It's called confirmation bias. Now please shut up and put your anecdotal evidence away.

The media has only one bias: $$$$.

Because Obama appeared on Time twice and GQ (ugh.. okay) once that means McCain hasn't gotten a free pass?

There have been plenty of pro-McCain covers out there. Newsweek had one recently gushing over him being an american hero.

Geez. You know, they don't meet up every Monday and say "we're going to say this, OK?" Calling it "the media" just seems to dumb it down and make it easier to blame.

A long time? How long are we talking? The only candidates who got press coming in were Giuliani and Clinton. I'm talking last November. McCain was the underdog. No one paid any attention to him until his first win.

Superjoe 2008-04-13 07:17:27 PM

If there's one thing they love more than blowing pols when they are up, it's beating them when they are down.

Which is why McCain will get nothing but sunshine at least until there is only one Dem standing.

Wrong. The media did. THe media carried McCain on their backs after Iowa. He would never have won NH if the media hadn't been in the tank for him. He got far more coverage than he shoudl have, given his campaign status and his placing in Iowa.

Prospero424 [TotalFark] 2008-04-13 07:34:47 PM
The double standard is still alive and well in the major media. It's almost like a replay of the 2000 election where they harangued Gore for every little tic yet gave Bush the benefit of the doubt on every glaring mistake he made because they liked his folksy charm and, yes, wanted to have a beer with him.

They're treating McCain almost exactly the same way as they did Bush in 2000 an they're treating the Dems the say way they did Gore and Kerry. Should we really have expected anything different?

The press is also practically obsessed with not appearing elitist, so they tend to overcompensate. This manifests itself in a mean anti-intellectual streak in the reporting of the Washington press corps if not the private personalities that make it up. And the Republicans have made an art of using this for their own media manipulation.

To the media, "straight talk" means artfully and simply worded propaganda. This isn't limited to McCain, this is something endemic to our media culture in these times; there's nothing beltway insider journalists respect more than a good liar, and it shows with every report.

Prospero424 [TotalFark] 2008-04-13 07:41:23 PM
TKPMM5: What about the guy on MSNBC who has a segment called Teflon John where he says John McCain sucks.

Yeah, Abrams, I think. It's nice to see someone picking up on it, even if he's the only one.

MSNBC's political director was on television last week as well, where he made an off-hand comment about the media reaction to McCain's repeated "gaffes" regarding Sunnis and Iranian collaboration. This is one of the most senior staff at the network most focused on political reporting and he said flat-out that if Obama or Hillary had made the same mistake McCain did, it would have been on an endless loop for a week not only on his network, but on all of the others. But because it's McCain, it's just dropped.

And he's annoyingly correct...

I'm just hoping that this paralysis is temporary and that they'll start hitting him equally as hard as the others when it gets closer to November. I'm not exactly holding my breath, though.

RandomExcess 2008-04-13 07:57:31 PM
If the Media was so objective to McCain, then we would get the truth of his military service.

I mean, come on, 28 medals for 20 HOURS of combat service? What is the TRUTH of his service?

irockalot 2008-04-13 07:58:37 PM
As long as Obama becomes the Dem candidate, who cares? He'll slay him.

shocker66s 2008-04-13 08:02:21 PM
It doesn't matter if they talk about McCain or not. Hillary and Obama are better for ratings. That is the bottom line. Their squabbles are more entertaining than McCain's speeches. As much as I respect McCain, he cannot debate very well. Obama is going to hand him his ass in the debates. And that he has a mild case of tourrets does not help.

The ultimate true media bias is towards anything that makes their job easier. Right now, the drama of Hillary and Barack fills up their columns with minimal effort, so worrying about Johnny Mac is irrelevant. It's not a coincidence that every time Obama has appeared close to knocking out Clinton for good, the media has become her lapdog. Why would Campbell Brown cut through Hillary's BS when keeping her in the race gets her a rediculous show about each candidate's faith tonight?

By the same token, any candidate that makes it easier to get quotes or "access" will be generally be handled with kid gloves, because they want to keep that gravy train of information rolling. Why point out McCain's flip flops on the foreclosure crisis in the last couple of weeks if he's giving you scoops on each step in the "evolution"?

It's the story, stupid.

Remember kids, the greatest trick the devil ever played was convincing the world he doesn't exist. That devil is the conservative media.

Daily Kos is utterly biased and completely misrepresents everything. Only a total tool would give them more than 2 seconds of their time and absolutely nothing they say should be listened to. Going on about how the media treats McCain when you're a bunch of hacks without a shred of objectivity in your body is just what I said it was: Like China complaining about human rights abuses by Tibet.
