It's not really strange at all subby. Toddlers do have different diet requirements & you can't simply feed them as though they were miniature adults. At that age they're going through growth spurts and need a diet higher in fat & calories.

I always put my size down to much milk, and a love of fried lives when I was a kid.

yes, I was a weird kid

Liver is actually the best part of the animal. When lions go hunting, it's always the female lions that perform the kill. Then the alpha male lion wakes up, saunters over, chases everyone else away, eats the liver, and goes back to sleep.

From what I hear you can actually die from eating the liver of some carnivorous animals. If I recall correctly it can cause an overdose of vitamin A. Specifically polar bear livers, warn all your inuit friends. I have no idea what I'm doing anymore or why I'm not sleeping.

After browsing around wikipedia a bit:
The first documented death due to vitamin A poisoning was Xavier Mertz, a Swiss scientist who died in January 1913 on an Antarctic expedition that had lost its food supplies and fell to eating its sled dogs. Mertz consumed lethal amounts of vitamin A by eating the dogs' livers.[3]

I happily feed my kid several strips of bacon, farm eggs, and knobs of butter. And once a week, a big piece of salmon. Their brains need the fat.

But was he a vegetarian as a toddler? Becoming a vegetarian at 18 will have little impact on on one's eventual height; becoming one at 2 or 3 more so.

I think my SIL has stunted her kid by feeding him a vegetarian diet. I'm already gearing up for the fights what will ensue should we have kids -- there will be no vegetarianism in my family.

Day_Old_Dutchie 2008-04-13 10:10:33 AM
Unfortunately, for the vegans and vegetarians, we as a species have evolved to survive on both plants and animals. Our digestive system with the extremely long small gut and short large gut is an evolutionary compromise.

That being said, as north Americans we do tend to eat way too much meat in our diet, but the key is to keep it to about 4-6 oz/day, the size of one-half chicken breast, one egg or a burger patty is actually sufficient for most people.

I'm sick of all those holier-than-thou vegetarians scolding me for doing what's natural.

Was he a vegetarian as a small child?

Besides, it's not the veggies that are the main issue, it's the insufficient protein, fat and overall calories. Young children need these things in different amounts than adults..

Driver [recently expired TotalFark] 2008-04-13 10:12:56 AM
Hot dogs with ketchup, a bowl of ice cream and Pop Tarts should cover the main food groups and the kids will love it.

Dorothy Day 2008-04-13 10:13:19 AM
It's already been determined that a Vegan (no animal products/protein whatsoever) diet is not good for kids
Soy just doesn't cut it as a replacement protein....

Ovo-Lacto Vegetarian ok (lots of eggs, lots of milk), but wouldn't recommend it for the littlest ones....they don't eat that much anyway.

HappyHarryHardOn [TotalFark] 2008-04-13 10:17:27 AM
That's really pathetic when parents impose their vegetarian diet on their kids considering so many vegetarians don't know how to properly get their protein equivalent, that must be double so for their kids.

tehotherbilly 2008-04-13 10:19:34 AM
As a race we've grown soft. It was the hunt that made us strong. Walking around everyday in search of food, going for days without food. I feel that the absence of such a basic activity has caused us to develope weird reactions to the food we now eat.

/and also over processing of food

Zeebot: That's it then. Everything is bad for us.

You're just figuring this out now? There are no such things as health experts. Only people that claim they're health experts. Although I have to say that each age group has different healthy living requirements.

Now FTA: which analysed samples from one week's worth of breakfast, snacks, lunch and supper from every nursery in East Sussex, is likely to be an accurate reflection of the national picture.

Any UK farkers know how many nurseries are in East Sussex? 4*5 to 4*7 = 20 to 28 meals per nursery. Somehow I don't think the number of nurseries will help the sample size enough to make it large enough.

jake3988 2008-04-13 10:22:36 AM
What, it's actually a surprise that all vegan girls are tiny?

Protein has long been known as a key to height. As well as iron.
Both of those will heavily lack on a vegetarian diet.

HappyHarryHardOn: That's really pathetic when parents impose their vegetarian diet on their kids considering so many vegetarians don't know how to properly get their protein equivalent, that must be double so for their kids.

Seriously. It's one thing to be a vegetarian in India where there is an entire culture dedicated to the idea (even then I've noticed the meat eaters tend to be bigger) but it is quiet an other to do it here where being a vegetarian seems to consist of "I don't eat meat."

Riffington 2008-04-13 10:25:51 AM
A vegan diet is fine for little kids as long as it includes enough breast milk (assuming the woman gives consent to having her milk used, that's vegan).

t1n0m3n: Cauchy_Riemann_equations: OK that is screwed up. You are farking your SIL?

Eh? No...that side of the family is vegetarian for religious reasons. By feeding what kids I have with my husband (who, for the sake of clarification is the brother to my SIL) I will be "disrespecting" 1000s of years of culture.

tiamet4 2008-04-13 10:30:46 AM
Given that kids are apparently fatter than ever these days, they seem to make up the calories and fat somewhere along the way.

Obviously, growing people just like growing animals need more calories and fat. There's a biological reason why kids love sugary sweets and desserts. However, I'm not sure that the nurseries are so much "misinformed" about nutritional requirements, as trying to provide healthier food to kids who will no doubt get lots of junk elsewhere.

Also- vegetarian kids don't get the fat that is in breast milk and other high-fat foods, and that fat is essential to brain development.

In other words, vegan kids grow up to be dumb kids.

...and along those lines...

Wouldn't it be interesting if the REAL cause for the increase in autism in this country was early weaning and shoving low-fat foods at our kids early in age. I don't think you'll see a study looking at that cause-effect though. Too easy to go after the big bad evil vaccine conspiracy.

Good idea; run out of food in the frozen polar circle and start eating YOUR ONLY TRANSPORTATION OUT... I hope his life insurance didn't pay out; stupid is a pre-existing condition.

I also knew someone who was a near-vegan who had a kid. Her son at birth (full term, not a preemie) was less than six pounds...

I was a steak eating toddler but converted to a vegan as an adult. I thank my mother for teaching me how to eat and appreciate a bloody steak covered in bacon but eating a vegan diet has helped me kick the habit of collecting fat on my ass. Which I'm sure that is mostly due to the restriction of refined flours and sugar.

I converted after my children were addicted to meat. I let them make the choice... They still eat steak. Yes, I said I let my children choose. I don't force my religion or political views on them either. Just make sure they are informed and give them guidelines and children will surprise you. They will make a wrong choice here and there but if you punish them they will learn from it.

Dog_Of_Peace 2008-04-13 10:45:46 AM
well i experienced this first hand. my older sis became a veg early on at age 11, now she is 5ft tall exactly. I am 6ft and my younger sis is 5'7. No, no pics either so reading this was completely worthless.

He is showing before/after pics of his wifes "incredible weight loss", from 13 years ago to present?

Any coincidence that their eldest child is 13 years old? Lets see what she looked like before she packed on the pregnancy weight. The guys claims he's been eating vegan for 30 years, I doubt he married a fatty.

Good for you. Forcing vegetarianism on children is basically child abuse. Children need a balanced diet that includes meat (mostly fish, but moderate amounts of red meat are OK to).

It's a myth that the males sleep while the females hunt. Watch the National Geographic viedo "Eternal Enemies: Lions and Hyenas".

/liver removes toxins from the blood, same as kidneys

Wait, you lost weight by reducing refined flours (not meat) and sugar (not meat), but credit the vegan diet? Huh?
