U2, "The Joshua Tree". the local FM obtained a "pre release" copy and for a few weeks, ran promos for the "world premiere" of the album on a certain Friday night. So, my initial memories of the album are of tuning in to 104.7 KZZP (now some shiatty modern adult greatest 80's soft rock morning zoo adult alternative contemporary farking 90's, etc., station.)

Grateful Dead, "American Beauty"
. 1993. I thought the Dead were some kind of heavy metal, hard rock band. And then one time at the river, this was played, and I was like, "whoa. What is this?"

Elbow, Ribcage

Circa 2003, had a mild car issue, light needed fixed. At the repair shop, found a bookstore, and an English music mag had a cover about U2 recording "TJT", and then an article about a Mancunian band called "Elbow".

Bought the import version of "Cast Of Thousands" within weeks, and then bought the US version.

few years later, was in Dublin IRL, about 9,000 miles from home, and what should I find but...ELBOW's new album! "Leaders Of the Free World." The soundtrack to my trip around Ireland.

Met Guy on the US tour in LA later. Seeing Elbow again in LA next month.

I'm not much of a "band" follower. Normally I'm the jackass that will get "The Best of" albums because most artist albums have a lot of lame songs on them.

There are Three Bands that I used to buy their albums.

The earliest was the Beatles- thanks to my older brother. Like everyone I knew and liked most of their songs. But the Album and song that made me appreciate them was Rubber Soul and Norwegian Wood.

They Might Be Giants- Album: Flood, Song: Birdhouse In Your Soul. I heard the song and then saw them in concert. Got the album and that got me buying a majority of their albums...and I don't think I've ever been disappointed.

Poi Dog Pondering: Album: Pomegranate. Song: Complicated. Another band I saw live...then got the album. For a few albums this band had a great Chicago style sound. Then they switched gears creatively and lost me.

Special mention: Kingston Trio. It was my dad favorite group when he was in college. I used to listen to his old records with the diamond needle record player. My favorite album was Live and the Hungry I. Sadly its a bit difficult to find their albums on CD.

Another special mention is Tom Petty. Full Moon Fever won me over with Free falling.

Knights of Cydonia - Muse

First heard it about a year ago now and they are one of the few bands that I actually follow. I missed them in September in Seattle, hopefully they'll swing by again soon. I just ordered their Wembley performance, from last year, on DVD can't wait to watch that soon as well.

Vampire Weekend - Oxford Comma. It was those descending harmonies on the second verse that got me, and then the weird absurdist-preppie lyrics latched on too.

Achtung Baby-U2-We only had one stereo in the house when this came out so my brother, the oldest child, controlled it. He listened to almost nothing but this album for a year. I got so sick of it I never wanted to hear their music again. Then one day I realized I missed their music and they've been my favorite band since.

Murder Ballads-Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
-I wanted to be Lottie back then.

My Way-Frank Sinatra-The Rat Pack was just cool.

I heard a local group play Night Train in a dive jazz club that I happened upon during a bar crawl in the mid-eighties; that got me hooked on Oscar Peterson and blossomed into a love of jazz (until then I was a 60's rock guy).

Too many to mention, but the biggest change came when I heard "How Soon is Now" by the Smiths in the middle of the night on MTV's 120 min. It really changed my life. I was a pseudo-metalhead with long hair. Shaved it all off the next day and half my friends started calling me a freak. I never looked back. It was great. Another one would be "Creep" by Radiohead. Yeah, it may be the "big" hit, but it was off their first album. I really saw or heard something in them that I felt was great. Enough that I persuaded about 10 of my friends who despised them to join me at their show at Tramps on 21st Street in NYC. All of them left changed. One of them compared it to seeing the Beatles at the Cavern. Overstated? Perhaps, but it was an amazing gig and it really showed the potential they had as they debuted material from their upcoming "The Bends". Killer...

Oh yeah...I should add "Swordfishtrombones". It may not be Wait's best, but it was my first and a friend felt that if I could get through that, I'd like his earlier stuff too. I grew to LOVE both his early and late stuff. Hope to see him if he ever gets his ass out to NYC. Either that or I have to move to Europe.

You're correct, that's some boring-ass old-people stuff. ;)

I guess for me music is so time related I never really get hooked on a single band or song, and instead like something a bunch for a period of time and either remember it fondly or forget it.

I never understood why classic rock stations existed--how many times can "Smoke on the Water," "Freebird," and "Stairway to Heaven" be interesting, or even listenable?

Heh. That is one of many good things about certain songs. Who doesn't like when a song can get your blood pumping like that?

Any song played too much will get annoying. I think those stations exist because some DJs will actually play songs that people don't hear too much. It's nice to have an hour or two of songs that bring back memories.

Whatever floats your boat, I'm still digging this one by Antonio Vivaldi, still a classic hit, after nearly 300 years.

Too often people mix up love with being wishy washy. They either have to control everything about their lover-or they are so lethargic they make no effort to interact with ther S.O. There is something about knowing when to let them lean on you and then trust them to be free.

Well, the only complaint I have about him, is that every time he does a song, he adds or subtracts lyrics. But then he's a poet, so I shouldn't complain.

I met a lady, she was playing with her soldiers in the dark
oh one by one she had to tell them
that her name was Joan of Arc.
I was in that army, yes I stayed a little while;
I want to thank you, Joan of Arc,
for treating me so well.
And though I wear a uniform I was not born to fight;
all these wounded boys you lie beside,
goodnight, my friends, goodnight.

Something about that particular lyric had touch me. Like he knew the same crazy women I knew. What the hell am I talking about; he's a poet: He's known crazier women than I could ever hope to know.
