Bob Clampett - isn't he one of those old Warner Bros. cartoon directors?

Back in the '40s, it was OK to say 'Chinaman' - and draw a character with really slanty eyes & buck teeth, saying "so solly!"

The "smelly fish face" commercial made him a bit bold.

If he had given himself a 2 minute penalty immediately on the infraction, Jim Nance and the others would have been applauding how much classier golf is.

On the one hand, complaining about this is silly. There was clearly no offense meant.

On the other hand..."Chinaman"? Is EVERYONE in the golfing world 50 years behind everyone else?

yoyopro 2008-04-13 08:46:09 AM
Funny thing is, that's what the native immigrants call themselves. Eventually, their banana kin convince them that "Asian" is the preferred nomenclature.
I've seen it happen, with the customs personnel, even they don't know the preferred nomenclature.
But think about it - most of you folk posting here, you come from the Western world. Are you a "westerner"? Someone from Mexico and someone from from Canada could be called a "westerner" - "the West" I think refers to a land mass, not a race. As a race, about the only thing westerners have in common is we eat a lot of corn. About the only thing "Asians" have in common is they eat a lot of rice. "Asia" should refer to a land mass, not a race.
But hey, don't let it stop the media from piling on some poor little sports commentator for calling it like it is. He's from China, call him a China man, he don't care. Call me a short sighted bigoted America man, heck, it's what I am. Spade is a spade after all.

Heracleitus 2008-04-13 08:46:45 AM
Seriously, I did not know that Chinaman was a slur. Then again, if they want to refer to him as Asian-American, then he isn't a Chinamen. He's an American.

/hates how far the PC pendulum has swung

goofass 2008-04-13 08:49:12 AM
Just to get this straight: Frenchman, Englishman, Irishman, even Scotsman, all are OK to say. But Chinaman, literally, man from China, is racist. Because I said so. So there. But I will say this for Asian-Americans: they can't drive a car for shiat.

Candyman 2008-04-13 08:53:21 AM

he world today seems absolutely crackers,
With nuclear bombs to blow us all sky high.
There's fools and idiots sitting on the trigger.
It's depressing and it's senseless, and that's why...
I like Chinese.
I like Chinese.
They only come up to your knees,
Yet they're always friendly, and they're ready to please.

I like Chinese.
I like Chinese.
There's nine hundred million of them in the world today.
You'd better learn to like them; that's what I say.

I like Chinese.
I like Chinese.
They come from a long way overseas,
But they're cute and they're cuddly, and they're ready to please.

I like Chinese food.
The waiters never are rude.
Think of the many things they've done to impress.
There's Maoism, Taoism, I Ching, and Chess.

So I like Chinese.
I like Chinese.
I like their tiny little trees,
Their Zen, their ping-pong, their yin, and yang-ese.

I like Chinese thought,
The wisdom that Confucious taught.
If Darwin is anything to shout about,
The Chinese will survive us all without any doubt.

So, I like Chinese.
I like Chinese.
They only come up to your knees,
Yet they're wise and they're witty, and they're ready to please.

All together.

[verse in Chinese]
Wo ai zhongguo ren. (I like Chinese.)
Wo ai zhongguo ren. (I like Chinese.)
Wo ai zhongguo ren. (I like Chinese.)
Ni hao ma; ni hao ma; ni hao ma; zaijien! (How are you; how are you; how are you; goodbye!)

I like Chinese.
I like Chinese.
Their food is guaranteed to please,
A fourteen, a seven, a nine, and lychees.

I like Chinese.
I like Chinese.
I like their tiny little trees,
Their Zen, their ping-pong, their yin, and yang-ese.

I like Chinese.
I like Chinese.
They only come up to your knees...

12.fl.oz.: How about just calling him a man?

Yeah, I think this is the key. I have some relatives who always have to identify the fact that someone in a story they're telling is black, and they have to do this in a big way. They're not necessarily insulting them, directly, the "black man" is not necessarily the butt of the story, but the way they do it makes it so clear that they are in shock, after all these years of living in an area that is about 40-60% black, that many of these black people are actually, you know, normal?

ex. "I went to the hardware store to get some bolts and I couldn't find them except in a box of a hundred and I didn't need that many, but a man who worked there, a black man, showed me the bin where I could buy as many as I needed..."

I've thought about baiting them - "You say a black man found those bolts for you?" but I'm afraid of where it would go...
