Why no plates for the Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Buddists, atheists, Vikings, etc.?

If this goes through, I'll have a word with the ACLU.

Well, that's all nice and accepting of the variety of the population. Because, clearly, everyone believes in God and nobody would be offended by this.

Ah, the infamous tolerance of religion.

How is this legal? The "Choose Life" plates were bad enough, but now the government is directly funding churches?

BigEd [TotalFark] 2008-04-12 11:17:32 PM
Well this sucks... I hate conflicts, I guess I could leave the "Choose Life" plate on my Excursion and put the "I Believe" plate on my Hummer. I love to make sure the person travelling behind me knows that I'm better than him.

It's not about tolerance of religion, it's about separation of church and state.

It's not. The courts will strike it down before it gets into law. This is just election year politicians trolling for votes.

FTFA: 'Maybe at this point the Legislature should begin rethinking whether a message on a state-manufactured plate, whether `I support panthers' or 'I'm a Christian,' might be better on a bumper sticker,' Simon said.

I'll be damned...I agree with the ACLU.

this is taxation going right to churches. I don't know just how it works in FL, but in Texas, the extra for the sports team plates just go into the states coffers, just like vanity plates. Other specialty plates, the money goes to things like literacy, the environment, aspca, the arts(mine), ect. Giving the money from these plates to a religious organization is state funded religon, plain and simple.

/oh, and what if i'm dyslectic and believe in dog

CtrlAltDelete [TotalFark] 2008-04-13 12:02:57 AM
I don't really care if they have license plates for it, to tell the truth. It would just piss me off if they denied the existence of an atheist plate (like we would actually want license plates saying simply "I DISAGREE WITH YOU!") and the like.

They are just being consistent with what they've always argued.

We must stop this travesty. People expressing their beliefs in public are offensive, we have first amendment rights.

rynthetyn 2008-04-13 02:46:57 AM
Don't sue, just start putting together a campaign for your favorite obscure religion. Once they discover that they have to allow all religious-themed plates under the equal protection clause, they'll can the idea.

/On second thought, don't do that
//We'll probably end up with 100 different religion vanity plates then
///Can I have a new state, plz?

I would too, except I have no standing (not being from Florida).

These people need to be slapped upside the head.

gilgigamesh 2008-04-13 03:11:41 AM
Even though Florida now has more than 100 specialized license tags, the Republican-controlled Legislature may soon add one more: a colorful license plate that features the words 'I Believe' set among a resplendent sunrise and the image of a cross in front of stained-glass window.

I'd like a license plate that says

I BELIEVE
I'll have another drink

... with an image of a maartini glass superimposed.

I wonder if Florida would have a problem with that.

Elvis Christ: We must stop this travesty. People expressing their beliefs in public are offensive, we have first amendment rights.

That isn't the point. People have the right to display their religious beliefs on their cars. No one is suggesting that they can't, or shouldn't.

One problem is that it is in the form of a state-issued plate. Personally, I am of the opinion that once the state allowed personalised plates, the source of the message became private, and so a religious message would not violate the barrier separating church and state.

The issue is that the state collects money for them, and that the funding goes to a religious charity. That puts the government in the role of raising funds for religious purposes, and therin lies the problem.

El_Dan 2008-04-13 03:33:55 AM
"I believe...people will key my car" would be cool, but "I believe...Florida taxpayers will soon spend millions of dollars in legal fees to defend against a massive first amendment lawsuit" is probably more appropriate.

TFA didn't say anything like that. It said they pay 25 bucks for a specialized plate. Nothing about charities, you're making that up. "therin" [sic] lies the problem.

Liberals are threatened by religion, which is the whole issue.

from FTFA:
The extra money earned from the sale of the 'I Believe' license plate would go to an Orlando based nonprofit called Faith in Teaching that says on its website that money from the plates would be used for grants to 'continue faith-based education for the youth of Florida.'

I'm sure the ACLU will have fun with this case.

I don't know any of that fancy law stuff (being from Texas) but anyone who buys a specialized license plate isn't an intelligent consumer. Especially since plates come standard with most cars.

This was a dumb idea from conception.

I was pretty impressed with your trolling of gun nuts, but you need to work on your right wing stuff, us liberals are much more used to being trolled and can spot bullshiat from much farther away.

Eh, you're right. Liberals are smarter than conservatives, that's why Bush was elected twice. Help me, Obi Wan Liberals, you're my only hope.

I'd have no problem with this, if they honestly allowed anything.

I find the license plate "GodBGrt" more offensive than (the filter is going to mess this up) "farkGod".

If they cab tell out-and-out lies, I should be able to tell them they suck.
