It's tough to "walk like a princess" when you've got a utility belt, flashlight, taser, sidearm, billy club, radio, GPS system, Swiss Army knife, cheese grater, recording device and ammunition clips on your person, which is clothed in front and rear body armor, an itchy wool uniform, knee-highs and black Aerosoles.

Now, when they zoom past me at eleventy million miles an hour for no reason (there's no way they need to be driving that fast ALL the time) and cut me off, I kinda get the idea. Especially when they pull me over for going 3 mph over the speed limit. Hypocrites.

FTA...

The officer's statement show that her etiquette lessons included instructions to wear lipstick and rouge while on duty, ask permission to enter a conversation, wear expensive jewelry and otherwise behave in a manner that seems more appropriate to a debutante than a woman in uniform.

You know, I kind of get her point. Why the hell should she have to wear jewelry, for starters? Jewelry can be a work hazard (it'd only take one perp tearing out an earring to cause hell). And ask permission to enter a conversation? I can see "please don't interrupt people", but god damn!

And what if she was allergic to makeup? Or simply didn't like wearing fish scales, etc?

Still, I dunno of this is sexual harassment. What's required of the men, exactly? Do they have to wear lipstick?

As far as I'm concerned, most cops could use etiquette lessons.

Buncha maladjusted former bullies and their victims who retreated into back issues of Soldier of Fortune and daydreamed of the day when they could carry a gun and push everybody around for a living.

They NEED extensive training on how to deal with people that goes beyond "takedowns" and "holds."

Astra 2008-04-13 12:30:19 AM
I'm with Ringshadow. I'd feel rather insulted if I was singled out to go to training to find I apparently needed to learn "how to walk like a princess." Maybe it was just a screw-up by someone who didn't research the course offerings enough, but in the light of the conflict mentioned in the article I could see how it could be an intentionally hostile act.

I work around law enforcement and we're really kind of discouraged from makeup and jewelry (not banned, just reminded that it can get in the way and to think about that before wearing an armful of bangles). Somehow I doubt you can princess-walk in combat boots, either :)

Flash314 2008-04-13 12:30:31 AM
Ringshadow: What's required of the men, exactly? Do they have to wear lipstick?

They are required to be able to eat a dozen doughnuts in a single sitting, unlike us sailors, who are required to be able to carry a dozen donuts, while holding two cups of coffee

Astra: Somehow I doubt you can princess-walk in combat boots, either :)

It can be done. Just walk on any military base. Anyways, cops don't usually wear combat boots, just those cheap shiny dress shoes

Id like to give everyone a nice sup of RTFA.

Some idiot temp admin used a prepackaged customer services course from an 'etiquette' company. Without checking what that meant. The idiot doesnt even work there anymore.

No sexual harrassment, but someone who is on admin leave under investigation for something else (noone would tell the jhourno what) wants urgently to appear to be the wronged party.

If I had to guess what actually happened here, I'd bet that the department hired an external etiquette "expert" to teach a course. Said expert was probably accustomed to dealing with the corporate world, and did not revise his/her course to reflect the nature of law enforcement.

Having attended an etiquette course myself in a former job that frequently arranged day-seminars for the "further enrichment of employees' skills and experiences," I can tell you that of what we were taught, about 30% was utterly useless and about 40% was common sense.

There were a few things that were useful, particularly in formal situations. (i.e. the 'what fork to use' type stuff) and some stuff that most people know, but that certain clods would benefit from IF they would pay attention. (i.e. the 'don't interrupt people' type stuff) The rest was a lot of ridiculous and arcane ceremony type stuff that mostly only matters to people who spend most of their lives looking for an excuse to judge others anyway.

In any case, my guess is that a course of this nature was what she was subjected to, and she should have simply done what everyone else who attends such things does... glean what you can from it that's actually useful to you and your work, and disregard the rest.

technicolor-misfit 2008-04-13 12:42:45 AM
Oh, and I guess if I'd actually bothered to read the entire article the first time, I'd have realized my point was moot as it says that's exactly what happened.

FTA - What Ms. Lopez was put through was egregious," Averill said, adding that the department's intent was for Lopez to receive customer service training and she was only referred to etiquette school after a police lieutenant failed to properly research the kinds of services provided by The Etiquette Co., the firm that provided lessons to Lopez.

It was 1 in the morning, I was going 53 in a 50.

I'm not saying there's never a need to drive quickly. But when I get cut off by a bike cop on the highway who is easily doing 80 in a 55, and I see him just chillin on the side of the road with his radar 5 minutes later...yeah I have a problem with that.

No, it's like a guy not wearing makeup. WTF? Grooming is grooming. If the policy is that guys must be cleanshaven, so must women. If hair has length restrictions, it's explicit. Makeup is a personal choice and in many situations a distraction. Glad to hear the wingnut who brought in that "course" was strung up.
