Oh man. I saw that. They just gutted Fox.
John Oliver is my favorite on there.

that was a quality segment.

That was pretty funny. I'd like to see what they say about Fox Business.

Dammit! I was hoping it actually happened!

I'll have to come back for the video clips after work, but this sounds like a good one.

Falcc 2008-04-12 10:01:22 PM
I LOL'd. Hard. I wondered if the guys at FOX laughed along with me and then started planning their outrage to keep the money coming in, or if they were outraged someone would dare question the great and powerful FOX.

I can't tell if it's greed or evil. That happens a lot these days.

Falcc: I can't tell if it's greed or evil. That happens a lot these days.

Methinks it's a little from Column A, a little from Column B.

True, but hypocritical. Like telling someone to lighten up while punching them in the nose.

Not news, but quality entertainment.

It was OK but kinda typical of multi-segment Daily Show bits. It draaaaaaaags in a lot of places.

So, at what point do you think a freeper/dittohead will come in here and say: "Bush won!! Ha ha!! You losers!!" while not addressing the Daily Show piece in question?

One is a 24-hour news channel which purports to be "fair and balanced", the other is a comedy show on a comedy network.

Whose bias do you think you should be more concerned with?

well considering one admits to being fake news...and one claims "fair and balanced..."

go watch the jon stewart interview he did w/ tucker carlson and he'll explain the difference

lol, i love it when people compare the daily show to the news networks. you're only insinuating that fox makes stuff up too, but the difference is the daily show admits it.

Why are you holding a comedy talk show up to the same journalistic standards of integrity as a 24 hours news media outlet?

Daily Show is a comedy show on a network appropriately named "Comedy Central." Besides, I remember Stewart taking more than a few shots at Clinton back in the day, as well as shots at the current lot of Democrats for not stepping up and doing what they were elected to do: Shut down Bush and his war mongering crew.

Fox News is allegedly a news organization dedicated to the venerated profession of journalism. It's suppose to be unbias and factually based. It is obvious to anyone but the most oblivious that this could not be further from the case.

That isn't even a kettle in your picture! That's clearly a tea service, not a tea kettle. You'd never boil water in that. COME ON!

SemperLieSuckah 2008-04-12 10:33:14 PM
I can address all of those in one swoop:

The Daily Show hides behind it's label as a "comedy news show" whenever they are subject to criticism. I'm not saying they shouldn't be allowed to say what they say, but the fact is that they are a very serious contender in the world of public opinion. They are a comedy news show, but that is really not all. They have a big following, and a lot of people actually get their news and opinions from it.

They're morons, but it's true.

It's there to symbolize "comedy news show" as opposed to "news personality show". It's not "the same thing" but ironically does pretty much the same thing.

that's all well and good...the difference is still one claiming to be fair and balanced and another calling them out on it. does the daily show lean left, undoubtedly, but then never say that they don't. and the funny thing is...in comparison, they are the more fair and balanced. not perfectly so, but closer to the middle than fox is

t3knomanser 2008-04-12 10:35:50 PM
SemperLieSuckah: They have a big following, and a lot of people actually get their news and opinions from it.

That's they're fault? They don't make any pretense of being balanced or being journalistic. If people are getting their news from them, it's not because the Daily Show misleads them with a catchy slogan like "Fair and Balanced".

If anything, the only reason TDS is a worthy "news" source is because the news, nowadays, is such a frickin' joke.

//And you didn't address my point above.
//I get all my news and opinions from Fark.

SAvoodoo: either way i'm going to re-watch it and enjoy it so at least there's that.

Yeah, I downloaded the episode somewhere, so it's in my folder that I break open when I need inspiration. Watching Jon Stewart walk onto the set and completely dismantling that show to the point that it was subsequently taken off the air is a thing of beauty.

But I'm spoiling it, so I digress.

t3knomanser 2008-04-12 10:37:51 PM
SemperLieSuckah: It's there to symbolize "comedy news show" as opposed to "news personality show".

The phrase is "That's the pot calling the kettle black." Your picture has a pot on the left hand side, but on the right, instead of having a kettle, you have a tea service. Not only are they completely different objects that serve entirely different (but related) purposes, but it totally betrays the meaning of the phrase.

t3knomanser 2008-04-12 10:39:10 PM
t3knomanser: but it totally betrays the meaning of the phrase.

It part, because ornate tea services, like the one pictured, are often made out of silver, which (without proper care) could easily BE BLACK. That makes the whole phrase break down- the pot might be entirely accurate in referring to the tea service as black; in fact, in your picture it IS BLACK.

You'll have to forgive him. He gets his information from Fox News. Obviously, some of the facts are going to be misunderstood by him.

Um, I thought it had been determined by someone, somewhere that Daily Show viewers are among the best educated of television watchers. Most likely, they recognize TDS for what it is (unlike the viewers of Fox).

I'll write this slowly, so pay attention. The Daily Show uses irony to point out the obvious flaws in the 24-hour news network's reporting. You know, like Faux News. Hence, a person who is not irony deficient can get information and comedy. But the key is you already have to be informed to get the jokes.

Yeah, if they're not careful, people might realize that corporate-owned media is a bad joke that only makes them less informed and more complacent. Wouldn't want that, would we?

But the point of the aphorism isn't that the kettle ISN'T black; it's that the POT is black as well. The pot may be entirely justified in calling the kettle black! The kettle could be as black as the Stygian depths. The accuracy (or lack thereof) of the pot's statement in no way detracts from the point.

You're correct, though, that it is a tea service rather than a kettle that is pictured. Perhaps even a samovar.

Number41 2008-04-12 11:02:05 PM
Hitting Fox News is so easy that the joke is old. I cringe when I hear "Fox News" as a punchline, not because I don't agree, but because everyone agrees and has made the same joke.

/but don't get me started on airline food, am I right?

Your Faith is Creepy: But the point of the aphorism isn't that the kettle ISN'T black; it's that the POT is black as well.

That's never how I interpreted it, but I could see the validity of that interpretation.

Your Faith is Creepy: Perhaps even a samovar.

It's not a samovar, unless it's just the top bit, which is essentially just a tea pot, like you'd have in a standard tea service. A full samovar would have a spigot beneath the pot. The super strong, concentrated tea would be in the top bit, and then the spigot would release hot water to dilute it with.

This pot and kettle comparison is nonsense and if those with an ideology on the Right can't see that it speaks a lot to their critical thinking capacity (of course, I think anyone who follows an ideology by definition has critical thinking issues). One is a comedy show with an open bias. One is a news network which claims to be fair and balanced. Tis a bit of a difference.

I root for Fox News not because I like them, but because they piss off the left sooo much. It's like whenever Ann Coulter says something that just gives ulcers to liberals; I don't agree with her but man is it fun to watch them squirm.
