That is just subbys pathetic attempt at a main stream media headline.

Neither did I hear him say "my point was invalid."

Funsucker [recently expired TotalFark] 2008-04-12 03:11:22 PM
That's not what he said at all. He said that people getting the short end of the economic stick are understandably bitter. The Republican party loves to throw out red herrings to distract the lower middle class on social issues while it lets the rich loot the country. He's just telling people the truth: if you're bitter because the rich are getting richer and you're getting poorer, keep you eye on the damn prize.

SangamonTaylor 2008-04-12 03:13:44 PM
About small town folk, Obama said:

"And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or anti-pathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

What an idiot. Way to win over the small town independent. Reagan cross-over my ass.

So this is just a rehashing of the already existing thread?

1. Obama tells truth about poor people's unfortunate situation
2. Clinton and Walnuts attempt to twist his words so it appears that Obama approves of the unfortunate situation
3. Obama makes a winning rejoinder

I'll say this cause I said it in the other thread and I still think it's true - even if Obama was right, it was still a stupid thing to say in the middle of a presidential campaign.

neapoi 2008-04-12 03:20:31 PM
And before I get flamed, his message may or may not be important, IMHO it's the way he phrased his statement was what's silly about the whole thing.

More complete quote:

"You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years. ... And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or anti-pathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

Best I could find. You can say that's at least somewhat true, but it's a broad generalization and a very stupid thing to say in a campaign. That's a great way to alienate some voters and give the other side some ammo, and yes, it IS condescending. Bad move, Barack.

Just keep flinging poo till something sticks, you sure as hell won't win because of McCain's merits.

Barack spoke the truth in that small town people are bitter about having their jobs taken away and feeling left behind. When that happens, you turn to the things that bring comfort and the things you can count on. He just phrased it poorly and the opposition jumped on it. It's not a bad thing to feel bitter about something. It's a natural, human reaction when you lose something you care about under unfair circumstances.

Hillary on the other hand completely lied on multiple occasions about her Bosnia incident. Given, it's only one instance each but his one poorly worded but still valid speech is far less damaging than Hillary's flat-out lie which was clearly meant to garner votes.

This looks like a ham-fisted attempt by the Clintons (and a target of opportunity for the Republicans) to discredit someone who they've had an extremely difficult time digging up real dirt on.

floor9 [TotalFark] 2008-04-12 04:07:03 PM
I think it's cute that pretty much nobody but the neocons give two farks about this. That means one of two things:

1) Bush was such a terrible president, and his administration so inept and useless, that people are happy to let a slip like this slide.
2) Obama is such an overwhelmingly great guy (think Bill Clinton beginning in late '91) that Democrats and Republicans alike are willing to see this for what it is: nothing.

Yeah, keep on digging, neocons. Don't bother talking about what your own candidate can do; just complain about everyone else. Nothing to see here.

This. However, to the majority of Americans, your first paragraph and what Obama said, while perhaps having the same general thrust, come across as very different.

Nobody was running for president in A Few Good Men...

robsul82 [TotalFark] 2008-04-12 04:31:21 PM
Again, Obama's in trouble for telling the truth and Hillary's in trouble for telling a lie. Way it goes.

It's just funny how, everytime there's some fantasy movie about a politician telling the truth, like Bulworth or something, everyone says "why not in real life?" Shiat like this happens, and it proves how people THINK they want someone telling the truth, but they don't.

In his explanation speech, he says: "So I said, well you know, when you're bitter, you -- you turn to what you can count on, so people, they vote about guns..."

That sounds like he's saying that bitter small-town people are the ones opposing his plan to outlaw handguns.

Obama attempts to talk to people like adults and tells the truth. It hurts him politically. Clinton jangles keys in front of camera and gains 2 points.

He's just telling people the truth: if you're bitter because the rich are getting richer and you're getting poorer, keep you eye on the damn prize.

He talked about people picking an arbitrary thing to focus their anger at their general situation on, and immediately followed it by picking arbitrary (divisive democratic talking points) things to focus the blame for his general situation on (he didn't explicitly say that liking guns or opposing immigration made people too close-minded to vote for him, but he implied it well enough). It was perhaps a subtle and unintentional hypocrisy, but we're bloodhounds to that kind of thing after all the talk of unification and purity of ideals that we've heard from him.

Link to the retraction or whatever isn't working, but I'm hoping he caught and corrected himself. Would be nice for a candidate to be a bit self-aware for once.

"Saying" being the operant word. His real mistake was overestimating the intelligence of the media and voters.

Note to Obama - treat the public like children who think that life is like a game of Candyland.

What a sad state we're in when someone says "Hey, those in power use false issues to divide and conquer the working masses".

If you don't believe that's true, you are the problem.

Why all the feigned outrage? He clumsily pointed out something that was true.

If only the people who are upset in these threads (or Fox/CNN) had an ounce of such standards when applied to anyone currently in the White House (or the former occupants), who clumsily tell lies every day.

Right, because all those angry at them illegals aren't misguided? THEY ARE. The problem isn't people from other countries coming here, but those who have the power screwing the illegals, the Americans, and everyone in between who isn't in power now.

And those who think GAYS are the biggest issue? They aren't being played a fool by religious power-hungry zealots?

GoodasGold: "And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or anti-pathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

wow. You must have +2 cherry-picking ability.

You want to hear the entire thing, not what Fox News gave to you?

"OBAMA: So, it depends on where you are, but I think it's fair to say that the places where we are going to have to do the most work are the places where people feel most cynical about government. The people are mis-appre...I think they're misunderstanding why the demographics in our, in this contest have broken out as they are. Because everybody just ascribes it to 'white working-class don't wanna work -- don't wanna vote for the black guy.' That's...there were intimations of that in an article in the Sunday New York Times today - kind of implies that it's sort of a race thing.

Here's how it is: in a lot of these communities in big industrial states like Ohio and Pennsylvania, people have been beaten down so long, and they feel so betrayed by government, and when they hear a pitch that is premised on not being cynical about government, then a part of them just doesn't buy it. And when it's delivered by -- it's true that when it's delivered by a 46-year-old black man named Barack Obama (laugher), then that adds another layer of skepticism (laughter).

But -- so the questions you're most likely to get about me, 'Well, what is this guy going to do for me? What's the concrete thing?' What they wanna hear is -- so, we'll give you talking points about what we're proposing -- close tax loopholes, roll back, you know, the tax cuts for the top 1 percent. Obama's gonna give tax breaks to middle-class folks and we're gonna provide health care for every American. So we'll go down a series of talking points.

But the truth is, is that, our challenge is to get people persuaded that we can make progress when there's not evidence of that in their daily lives. You go into some of these small towns in Pennsylvania, and like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them. And they fell through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not. So it's not surprising then that they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.

Um, now these are in some communities, you know. I think what you'll find is, is that people of every background -- there are gonna be a mix of people, you can go in the toughest neighborhoods, you know working-class lunch-pail folks, you'll find Obama enthusiasts. And you can go into places where you think I'd be very strong and people will just be skeptical. The important thing is that you show up and you're doing what you're doing."

Next week it will be something involving a zebra, Billy Joel CDs and the Liberty Science Center.
