It once was a terrorist group, but has since reformed into a true political party

Do you know who else won a Nobel Peace Prize?
.

Yasser Arafat. That award has turned into a joke.

And Nelson Mandela was once a terrorist himself. Not saying we need to be soft on terrorists, but we might allow for the possibility of reform.

"How about me too? Or do you have to be a REFORMED terrorist in order to get off the no-fly list? Shouldn't people who were sent off to be tortured because they were wrongly accused of terrorism get more leeway than actual ex-terrorist group members?"

Nelson Mandela was (and probably still is) a communist, so should stay on the "no fly" list.

Communists are not allowed to fly? Really?

Why should being a communist put you on the no fly list? Or are you being sarcastic?

"If there is a country that has committed unspeakable atrocities in the world, it is the United States of America. They don't care for human beings."

Maybe they were just mad he called them names?

I wouldn’t want to fly with Nelson Mandela. He’s kind of a nut job.

Was everyone in the ANC a "terrorist"? No. But there were some.

You know what Jefferson and Mandela have in common? Both were in the winning team.

It lacks a sense of historical context. The person who may seem to be a peacemaker now, may not seem so 25 years down the road.

Case in point: Henry Kissinger. Does Cambodia look peaceful to you these days?

Just a little sarcastic. I wanted to go way over the top, but I figured using the Stormfront link to the same story would have gotten me a couple days in the sin bin.

My last year of High School I skipped a day of classes to go to Toronto to listen to Mandela speak before thousands of people at the Skydome. One of the best decisions I've ever made.

RTFA pps 6-9. Also quotes Sen. Judd Gregg (R-NH) and Rep. Howard Berman (D-CA). Condi just gets top billing at the media circus.

I'm confused. Does that mean that it was right for Kissinger to get the award?

Yeah, seems to be an okay place these days.

This thread is pure non sequitur. Is there some codeword for that in the headline?

This is funny for multiple reasons, including but not limited to the centrist policies that the ANC put in place during and after Mandela's term in office, which are extensively criticised by the left in South Africa. And if being a former communist is a reason for America to put people on the no fly list...I had the impression that thought crimes didn't exist in The Land of The Free (TM). I can only assume you're trolling.

How easy is it in the states to legally change your name and get a new passport - thus getting off the no fly list?

Of course, organised criminals/terrorist can do it without worrying about the "legally" part, making the whole list a mockery.

dbirchall [TotalFark] 2008-04-13 05:59:48 AM
Change name... probably not too hard as long as you've got a useful reason (and I doubt the Judge will like "I need to get off the no-fly list"), and don't want to change it to anything too bizarre.

New passport... boy. That name change is sure going to require you to get a lot of new papers and stuff. And then you're going to have to send them in, and your old-name birth certificate, since they're sure not going to issue you a new birth certificate, and the papers showing that you did change your name, and really are the person formerly known as you...

Probably doable, but a biatch in terms of procedure and bureaucracy, I'd guess.

Unless it's a name change due to mawwiage, in which case it's smiled upon by the theocracy.

Mayhem_2006 2008-04-14 02:50:24 PM
See, if I was on the no-fly list, I'd like to change my name to that of a politician who was important enough to be newsworthy but not so important that they can avoid flying by public flights.

With a bit of luck rather than getting off the no-fly-list, the new name would be flagged as a possible alias of the other name, getting him on the list too.
