One of my bosses at work just put his Ford F150 into the garage for the summer, and is going back to biking. I think the nail in the coffin was the $100 he spent filling up the tank.

The same goes for my Honda Shadow replacing my Ford Explorer as my commuting vehicle.

A REAL motorcycle was one of the things I REALLY missed about North America when I was living in China and Hong Kong. And I mean 500 or 600ccs or more and not mopeds, Hongda scooters (not to be mixed up with HONDA, and yes it is a brand there in China), oversized scooters, two stroke motorcycles with plumes of blue smoke, and wannabe 125cc motorcycles. The only real big motorcycle you could get in China was a copy of an old BMW bike with sidecar.

However, back to the picture, yes the women are a more fun ride than the scooters.

$100 filling the tank? California?

You know what... I took him for his word, but he might have been exaggerating.

Gas is about $3.30 right now in SE Pennsylvania. It would be worth it for him to cross the bridge to Jersey.

Actually there is ONE scooter I would consider riding around and had fun riding and doing tricks with friends in a Toronto parking lot -- the Honda Ruckus. If you lean back far enough and try really hard, you can make it do wheelies... Yeah, I had an "ouch!", but that is one scooter you can pick up dust off and get on again easy.

Waiting for grainy phone video to show up on YouTube one day...

$100 filling the tank? California?

I just put $50 into my Ford Windstar (at the cheapest gas station in Eugene, Oregon) and it didn't even hit the half-tank mark... so, um, yeah... easy $100 fill-ups.

Close, but it was the Changjiang 750 (CJ-750) though, they are probably one in the same with a different name but in green.

I would be parking the car for the summer and riding the R6 for the summer but the bike is in the shop for 1400 worth of warranty work. Looking at the nice weather forecast for next week sucks.

Most of the pumps around here shut off at either 50 or 75 bucks, so I have to swipe my card at least twice to fill up my truck (Dodge Ram 5.9 with a 30 gallon tank). Ouch.

I've seen the YouTube videos of moped operators in large asian cities "dodging" traffic.

Ah. Pretty cool looking bikes, but I'd have to question their reliability and workmanship. The Urals used to have lots of problems but I hear they are much better now. Kinda like Harley during the AMF years I guess.

The workmanship bites, take a file to all the rough and sharp pieces sticking out, Loctite on all the screws and bolts (I asked the security guy at my condo what all the white gobs around his bolts were, he said that some Chinese use wet paint to seal and keep the bolts in place... next trip I had to Hong Kong, I found a tube of red Loctite for him and warned him about usage), and know where all the garages are.

He let me take it out for a spin one fine day. I wanted so bad to unhook the sidecar, but didn't want to ask...

One day, he asks me what colour would be good to paint it. I said, motorcycles all look good in gloss black and shiny chrome. 3 months later...

Granted they have made many many improvements from when they first started importing them, but they're not quite there, yet, quality wise.

My scooter let me show it to you.

Absolutely love it. Costs less than 4 cents to charge. Needs no insurance, license, or registration. Gets up to 100km per charge. All electric.

With it's low centre of balance it's very stable. I've driven it all but the very worst of winter days. I've removed the pedals from it (put them in the trunk since the law requires they be with the bike at all times), they just get in the way and are useless for propulsion. I've driven it to Oakville and back (about 65km round trip). Put over 1500kms on it so far.

It's slower than a gas powered moped/scooter, but still plenty fast enough for city driving. Much cheaper to run. I love it way more than the old Honda PT-70 I used to have.

That's a sweet little machine. I'd consider getting something like that, but its not very practical in suburbia.

UNObserver 2008-04-12 04:34:34 PM
Unless things have changed radically in Singapore... it seems the writer of the article tied the popularity of motorcycles etc. to the cost of fuel...

IMHO there may be such a relationship on a minor level but...

The real driving force is the way the sales tax, registration, road tax / slot and other fees are calculated... and the lower base cost of a motorcycle will save a person a LOT of money in the initial taxation...

AND there is a 'use' certificate you have to obtain... of which there are a limited number... and these are limited and priced based on the CCs of the vehicle's engine...

I guess my point is... if you can afford a car in Singapore - the cost of fuel is almost an afterthought compared to how much you are going to pay to just get on the road...

Currently we are getting overrun with Chinese bikes, mine is nowhere near as good as a Japanese bike, but for 30% of the money, it doesn't have to be.

If they ever get the quality issues ironed out, there will be big trouble.

Also, go to google and key in Vento Rebellian 150 or maybe Vento 250 motorcycle.

They look awfully blinged-out for my taste, but the price seems right.

Smart e-Bike

Here in Ontario they're capped at 35km/h. Which is fine for city driving.

I don't see why it would not be practical as an alternate vehicle in suburbia. I drive it from one end of my city to the other regularily, and out to my ex-wife's place in the Hamilton suburbia near Stoney Creek. It's a great vehicle for getting around anywhere you don't feel like/need to take the car and is too far to walk/bike. I still ride my bike from one end of town to the other too, but some days in the summer it's just too damned hot for doing that, and other day's I'm in too much a hurry or simply too lazy.
