um, you may not understand the difference, but china isnt really communist anymore, infact, many of the us policies regarding corperate welfare and bailouts are more communist than china.

Yeah maybe in 150 years.

You know china has exactly 0 functioning aircraft carriers?
Exactly 0 nuclear subs?

Not saying military might is all that makes a superpower, but it is a good chunk of it. Russia is closer to superpower status than china.

it's all about capitalism, and being a capitalist country, china will just keep sponsoring the us war debt (how do you think they pay for iraq w/o raising taxes?) until the us is officially bankrupt, they will then own the aircraft carriers and everything else public and can just repo the country.

Ron Paul Revere: Why are computers that could reveal sensitive data even connected to the internet?

How hard would it be for the government to use VMWare, setup virtual machines used solely for accessing the internet, and only allow the workstations themselves access to the internal network? Virtual computer gets infected? Big deal. No access to workstations, wipe and reinstall the image.

I mean really, the solution to this problem is so easy I can't find the words to express how outrageous this really is.

cmon, these guys didnt even know how to use the internet until a few years ago.

Are you joking? I think china knows we are not going to give up our entire country and all our military without a fight. The REAL result of china's debt buying is to make them one of the most heavily invested countries in the United States' continuing success. China does not want war with us, and does not want to see our government collapse because then all that investment goes away. World peace will come through economic integration....

Ron Paul Revere: Why are computers that could reveal sensitive data even connected to the internet?

Because our government isn't run efficently. It's not even run securely. It's a big, sloppy mess of hastily connected and patchwork systems rigged together with little thought given to industry standards or even logical planning. Every department is it's own little kingdom, every adminstrator off running things their own way.

Then again, the only reason nobody's been able to pull off a serious cybernetic assault on our critical IT infrastructure is BECAUSE the system is a rats nest tangle of system connections.

if china wanted economic integration, why would they use trojans to spy?

there's this thing in business (chinese and us govts are both businesses) called a 'hostile takeover'.

this 'hostile takeover' is where one business buys controlling stock of another business and thereby controls it.

Being the government, they are always 3-4 years behind on CPU hardware at a minimum. They are forced to buy surplus P4's in a era of dual and quad core chips.

You name the obscure, obsolete, security-less networking standard and it is still out there somewhere still being used at a US Government facility.

Security through disarray. I like it.

it's a mess in there. Dead links, hacked links that misdirect you to sites that have NOTHING to do with their description, systems that are patched and up to date sitting next to systems that are 4 years behind on critical updates, websites and databases connected to other departments who shouldn't be anywhere near that data....

And forget about trying to organize that insanity. nobody has the authority to force all those little cyber kingdoms into compliance.

I'm pretty far from being a competent SysAdmin (no formal training) and even I can come up with that easily workable solution. It's so glaringly obvious.

For an admittedly not very competent SysAdmin you seem awfully sure that every other SysAdmin is apparently retarded. No, those weren't your exact words, but if it's something so important and this perfect solution is apparently so glaringly obvious, that's essentially what you are saying.

I'm going to go with option #2, that this glaringly obvious solution also has glaringly obvious flaws that would be apparent after diving into the possibility for about 10 minutes, but ya know, whatever.

IHJP: As someone who works in information security for a living, this is the most insightful comment I've heard for a long time.

In general, people do not give a fark about ITSec, and are not prepared to put up with even the slightest inconvenience (what, I can't the Foobies.com autodownload flash video player on my work PC?). This mindset changes for about 2-3 months when a company gets hacked, then goes back to the status quo.

Good thing the government isn't a corporation then, or this could actually happen. They gave us money, we gave them bonds saying we'd pay them back with interest. If they get snotty, we can tell them we won't honor bonds issued to China, and then their economy goes to shiat since they're so heavily invested in us. Them trying to take us over economically is Mutually assured destruction.

*facepalm*

Most members of congress think the magic box spirits will get mad at them if they don't shake the mouse three time before sitting down and turning on the switch. And if they screw up and anger the magic box spirits, they call tech support shamans to come and dispel these things called 'daemons', which apparently inhabit printer buffers.
