Level 42 - from the Answer from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Steely Dan - The name of a steam powered sex toy from Barbarella
Led Zepplin - From Keith Moon's comment that the band's sound "would go over like a f***ing lead balloon
Lynyrd Skynnyrd - a play on the name of one of the coaches at the high school the Van Zant brothers went to.
.38 Special - After having to break into the house they used to rehearse in ('cause someone forgot the keys) and seen by a nosy neighbor, what the police were pointing at them as they came out.

/just a few more classics

I don't believ that for a second. Everybody knows Hillary Clinton didn't find the cure for AIDS and cancer. She is the cure for AIDS and cancer.

/Unfortunately, she is also the source of a worldwide pandemic of erectile dysfuntion, so it kinda evens out.

Without looking at the article, I'll venture a guess that Kasabian is named for the chick involved with the Manson family.

Beatles! Trogs! Strawberry Alarm Clock! 1910 Fruit Gum Company! Leonard Cohen!

Wait: Band names have always been pretentious & stupid.
Nowadays they're just stupider & pretentiouser.

QUADRAPHONIC OCTOPUS. (a name I created in jr. high when I was obsessed with 1960's psychedelic music. I finally got to use it 20 years later... link to the cd).

Sigor Ros can be hauntingly beautiful. Love their guitar sound....freaking big...like if God could play guitar he would this way. Not fats, just big enough to make the world shake.

As for names...I heard something about what a Limp Biscuit was and nearly gagged at the idea of a bunch of guys.....yuck. Anyways never really liked that band anyways.

Bzzzzt.

Syd Barrett named the Band, 'The Pink Floyd Sound' (later shortened of course) after blues musicians, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council.

I'm pretty sure you're wrong about the other two, as well.

I'll have to look closely next time I viddy that. I knew that was where Heaven 17 came from.

"Death Cab for Cutie" was a Bonzo Dog song but V. Stanshall said it was a headline in one of the London tabloids that John Lennon had also seen, hence its inclusion in Magical Mystery Tour.

But, you know, with guys like Stanshall and Lennon you had to take everything with a very large grain of salt.

Yup, me too. The "Bunnymen" were supposed to the four band members.

What about Portishead?

Unless I'm mistaken, that's an easy one: Portishead is the town where the band is either from, or near where the band is from. (Portishead, Bristol, Avon, UK) Also in the vincinity is where both Massive Attack and Tricky are from. Pretty good area to have lived about 15 years ago if you're into trip hop.

Of course I could be mistaken but that's what fark threads are for: presenting opinion as fact.

HappyHarryHardOn: that was amazing

Pretty farkin' amazing, I thought. A perfect example of what Teh Intratubes is for.

Seeing those album covers made me feel like I was back in kollidge again, walking through The Record Bar. I was knocked out to see Tim Buckley, John Fahey and early Floyd. The "2001" soundtrack was a nice touch, as was the possibility of Kubrick himself looking at a smutty magazine.

You know guys, I could have sworn that It was echo, now not so 100% now.

No biggie. I misremember stuff all the time. I've learned to hit Wiki for a refresher.

Pretentious? How so? Are sports teams pretentious too?

Like would it be less pretentious to say "Live at the Hollywood Bowl, Jim Morrison, a buddy from film school and a couple other dudes play rock and roll!" ... or "The Baseballers from St. Louis vs. The Baseballers from Milwaukee at 8:00 CDT!"

Jim Morrison was the apotheosis of the pretentious rock star,
and the origin of the name of the group came from an Aldous
Huxley book title. That's just as pretentious as a lot of
the bands quoted on the list. The difference being that in the
early days of rock & roll, they could be pithy and pretentious,
wheras latter day groups have to employ longer names.

As far as sports team names: not germaine to this conversation.

This. All four are hardly obscure - the Mars Volta are Rush for under 30-year-olds, My Morning Jacket are like Radiohead crossed with Wilco and just as good, Kasabian are a bit too Primal Scream-y but still wildly popular, and Manic Street Preachers have had more top 40 hits than most bands in history whilst still being one of the strangest rock bands ever to hit the mainstream.

You bite your tongue, sir. The Mars Volta holds no candle to Rush. Rush is Rush for under 30-year-olds, as is evidenced by me. :D
