By contrast, the majority of this anti-Mexican hysteria seems to flow from places like Iowa or Wyoming (regions that are largely not affected by this immigration).

This wall is a joke. I'll repeat it so everyone understands: This wall is a joke.

Opinions on illegal immigration aside, here's how the wall will play out: It gets fully built at a seemingly huge cost, and some people are happy and some are upset. Corporations need low cost labor though, and people willing to traverse a desert and in many cases come in on rafts that I wouldn't sit on in a pond will not let a glorified fence stop them.

But it's a visual response. It's a sexy response. But it's also a retarded response. The money spent on this will be cited as the reason there's no money to put in the infrastructure necessary to process and deport the illegals that border agents catch. Furthermore, eventually the amount of border agents will drop as well, and no meaningful change will happen to border security. I think it will actually get far more lax. But no one will notice because "look, there's a fence! I can see it myself! No illegals are going to get in here, no siree!"

This fence, this one time expense, will save the federal government huge amounts of money down the road by allowing it to avoid real methods of addressing illegal immigration.

And that's why, as a very liberal guy when it comes to immigration, I am shocked that the people who "ending illegal immigration" is a key issue for, support this retarded idea.
