Pinheads all, in business suits

Not always this way ... from old-timey MTV:

CHECK OUT 0:19m (new window)

~~

That being said, the opening siren to that video is my ringtone. I get lots of disturbed looks with that!

Hi
I'm your video DJ
I always talk like I'm wigged out on quaaludes
I wear a satin baseball jacket everywhere I go

My job is to help destroy
What's left of your imagination
By feeding you endless doses
Of sugar-coated mindless garbage

So don't create
Be sedate
Be a vegetable at home
And thwack on that dial
If we have our way even you will believe
This is the future of rock and roll

How far will you go
How low will you stoop
To tranquilize our minds with your sugar-coated swill

You've turned rock and roll rebellion
Into Pat Boone sedation
Making sure nothing's left to the imagination

M.T.V. Get off the
M.T.V. Get off the
M.T.V. Get off the air
Get off the air

See the latest rejects from the muppet show
Wag their tits and their dicks
As they lip-synch on screen
There's something I don't like
About a band who always smiles
Another tax write-off
For some schmuck who doesn't care

M.T.V. Get off the air
And so it was
Our beloved corporate gods
Claimed they created rock video
Allowing it to sink as low in one year
As commercial TV has in 25
"It's the new frontier," they say
It's wide open, anything can happen
But you've got a lot of nerve
To call yourself a pioneer
When you're too god-damn conservative
To take real chances.

Tin-eared
Graph-paper brained accountants
Instead of music fans
Call all the shots at giant record companies now

The lowest common denominator rules
Forget honesty
Forget creativity
The dumbest buy the mostest
That's the name of the game

But sales are slumping
And no one will say why
Could it be they put out one too many lousy records?!?

M.T.V.-Get off the air!
NOW

That's funny, 'cause MTV is, in fact, through being a music channel. They might as well call it Teens Gone Wild!.

MTV has to be the worst censor of its own programming. They broadcast everything BUT music, and their reality based shows are TEH SUXORS. Friends I know watch MTV can easily attest to its suckitude. I stopped watching quite a while ago.

hip_replacement: mtv is, in fact, not cool.

this, but they're trying to be cool. Those who work there are ninnies and twits, and they're run by Mr. Hinky Dink. It's time to clean some house...

Do you think they drink H***genized milk?

Fact Man 2008-04-09 05:39:23 PM
Maybe MTV did a focus group of their target demographic and found out that 14 year old girls don't like the word "homo".

Grrr 2008-04-09 05:43:08 PM
DEVO is so far beyond cool that've lapped it a couple times.

Ties to Negativland and Church of the Subgenius, foreseeing the commercial wasteland that could yet consume the WWW...

MTV NEVER cool

"Night Flight" on USA Network showed the cool stuff.

I think the last time MTV was cool, "Whip It" had just come out in video form.

Dr. Shadduck is probably not amused.

Anyone else find it ironic that MTV censored the name and lyrics of a song that whose name and lyrics were taken from a Creationist pamphlet? Oh well, maybe it's just me...

I would have hoped that an all-female version of Devo would be called DEVA.

I wonder if Devo 2.0 will be singing "Penetration in the Centerfold". Hmm..

Yeah, It's bad enough that they changed the lyrics to "Jerkin' Back and Forth" so that they're no longer about sexual frustration but rather dancing.

so I get to say HOMO as much as I want.

It's all over my milk cartons too.

Don't rag on the Devo 2.0. When my 5-year-old daughter is singin' "Freedom Of Choice", and I get to explain to her what it means, so that at the age of 5 she has a catchy musical way to be reminded about personal responsibility, all is right in the world.

WhyteRaven74 [TotalFark] 2008-04-09 10:33:57 PM
And yet 26 years ago no one thought anything about Jocko Homo.

I miss Night Flight, too - you never knew what you were going to see!

We have hated MTv since...'95 or so.

Cable sux! The signal quality is MUCH better with our rabbit ears and digital to analog converter box. Anything else we want to watch we can Netflix or find on the 'Net

limboslam 2008-04-10 12:41:38 AM
Well, the last thing MTV wants to do is offend fags. They, pretty much, are their target audience these days, right?

musicky 2008-04-10 01:58:19 AM
OH LAWD
I AM SOOOOOOOO TIRED
HOW LONG WILL THIS GO OOOOON?

I still don't understand Dev2.0. When I was at the age where I might have listened to it, I didn't like Devo. The cold, artificial precision of the music and the detached vocal delivery was a big turn-off. I was more of a Talking Heads guy at that age.

I guess the people who make these recordings must have realized that the people who were fans in Devo's heyday must have kids of their own now and are looking to force their music on them in any way possible. But even with the friendlier vocals and sanitized lyrics, how many hours of poring over stuff like "Then you took your tongs of love and stripped away my garment" does it take to realize that it's a bad idea (although an intriguing one) to market bowlderized subversion and innuendo to children?

sonnyboy11 2008-04-10 02:54:49 AM
If you don't like Devo, then you kind of suck and just don't know any better.

For one of the greatest live 'punk' performances, go here

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bnAXb6gmbOc

And I don't do that Rickroll shiat.

Walt_Jizzney 2008-04-10 12:21:01 PM
I'm sure it's been said, but if it wasn't for bands like DEVO, EmpteeVee (Mtv) wouldn't bee around.

bigbottom 2008-04-10 03:25:18 PM
Does anybody over the age of 14 watch MTV anyhow? Devo should be on VH1 Classic IMO.

Jocko Homo's the only song my cat ever listens to, or even acknowledges.

Well, that and the weird guitar part in Floyd's Echoes.

(not a rickroll)
This marriage of video to song is
the best ever done. Devo is a bit
beyond average, their songs still
stand up, some silly, some serious,
some pretty deep.
